It has become popular to reminisce about the '60s racing scene, and names like Ronnie Sox, Grumpy Jenkins and Dick Landy are always in the conversation. But the one who those guys were watching was Arlen Vanke, a legendary racing figure that dedicated 50 years to the sport of racing Super Stocks. Click here for a full story on Arlen Vanke and some of his famous Mopars.

Today one of Arlen's cars is for sale in the Race Car Section. He built a 1965 Plymouth Hemi Belvedere I to run Nostalgia Super Stocks in 1998 and 1999. He built it the way he would have back in the '60s, and featured his yellow and black paint scheme. Vanke talked to us this week from his home in Arlen Vanke's 1965 Plymouth Hemi Belvedere INew Mexico. He told us that he borrowed this car in 1998 from Tony Depilo of Dayton, Ohio. He made the car lighter, replacing the glass windows with lexan and getting rid of the window regulaters, ("reduced the weight of the doors by 150 pounds," he told us.)  He also rebuilt the Hemi engine, and went through the transmission ...  reversed the valve body and changed the power pressure. For the next two years, 1998 and 1999, Vanke campaigned this Hemi Belvedere in Nostalgia drags all over the country. He said he remembered running it at Milan, Mid-Michigan Motorplex, Quaker City, Dragway 42, Cecil County and Merton raceways. And his best run was 10.13 at 130 miles per hour at Norwalk.

Phill and Donna Hayenga of Byron, Illinois, now own the car, and have recently put it up for sale. Phill says he and his wife still race the car occasionally at Nostalgia Racing events. They also own Vanke's first Mopar, the 1963 Plymouth Max Wedge Savoy known as "Old Brownie." (See photo above of both cars on the line at Byron Dragway in 2010.) Hayenga says he didn't want to part with his '65 Plymouth Arlen Vanke Hemi car. But economics are forcing the sale. "I have to sell this one so I can complete my friend Craig Dawson's '70 Pro Stock Duster project," he explained. He is building a replica of Vanke's famous 9-second Pro Stock car. The Hayengas also own Roy Clark's 1965 Plymouth Hemi Belvedere better known as "Superpicker."

On the back bumper of the Hayenga's 1965 Plymouth Hemi Belvedere I is a sticker that says, "The older I get, the faster I used to be." Phill told us, "I got that one from Arlen." Phill met Arlen Vanke in 1988 at the Mopar Nationals. "Over the years we just got to know him," says Phill. "Most of us in Nostalgia Super Stocks have a lot of respect for what he has accomplished. Just look at the list of championships he's won." Now, with another Vanke project in the making, Donna has told Phill that he better sell the '65 Belvedere I. Here is an opportunity to own a super stock nostalgia race car that was built and raced by Arlen Vanke himself. It could be the centerpiece of your collection.

When the Chicago Auto Show, the nation's largest new car show event, opens this week one of the cars that is expected to be a big draw is the 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible (seen here.) They bill it as the fastest and most dependable convertible in Corvette's history. The heart of 2013 Corvette 427 Convertiblethis car is the 427 cubic inch 7.0L LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06, rated at 505 horsepower and 470 foot-pounds of torque. This car will only be available with a 6-speed manual transmission. The 427 Convertible also features carbon-fiber components such as the raised hood, Z06-style fenders and floor panels, which brings the curb weight to 3,355 pounds. With its high output 427 engine and low mass, the Corvette 427 delivers 0-60 performance of 3.8 seconds, quarter-mile performance of 11.8 seconds and a top speed of more than 190 mph. In 2013, Corvette models will be available with a 60th Anniversary package which includes exclusive Arctic White exterior with Pearl Silver Blue racing stripes, Blue Diamond leather-wrapped interior and 60th Anniversary logos. ... An android app called "Drag Racing" by Creative Mobile is among the most popular apps of all time, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. A reviewer called it "one of the most addictive" games for your smart phone or tablet. Click here to see the page review on Android Market. They say it has over 50 cars you can choose to race, including the officially licensed 1200 bhp Hennessey Venom GT™ (reviewed here in the newsletter a few years ago.) They say the reason is it so popular is that is has the most realistic controls. Creative Mobile claims it has 40 million+ players. You can build your own car and challenge other players online.

... I'm always amazed at how closely the collector car market follows the stock market. Right now the stock market is blazing hot, and so is the collector car market. Makes sense that when people are making money they want to spend it. Just look at the SOLD Feature below. This is the first time we ever sold a 1970 Plymouth Superbird and a 1969 Dodge Daytona in the same week. Unbelievable.

Cars On Line's

In the popular DEAL of the DAY preview we give you first shot at all the cars that will be featured in the DEAL of the DAY "rear view mirror" seen daily on the Cars On Line home page. Our fans wait eagerly each day to see which bargains will be highlighted. But often these cars sell right here in the preview. If you aren't a newsletter subscriber you'll never know what you're missing. Newsletter readers are able to preview the best bargains on our website right here in the DEAL of the DAY feature. You'll always see it here first.

It's not every week you see a first generation Camaro in the DEAL of the DAY mirror on our front page. But this week there are two such listings. A 1968 Camaro Pro Stree has been listed 1968 Camaro Pro Streetout of Manchester, New Hampshire. The seller says it has a fresh big block Chevy 468 ci motor, new cam, lifters, pistons and has had a valve job and new timing chain. He says the motor has less than 200 miles on it. It is a true street legal car, though. He says you can drive it to and from the track. You have to admit this is a lot of car for the money. So it will be our DEAL of the DAY for Saturday. The asking price is $16,900.

Pickup trucks from the 1950's are great for building into classic customs with modern technology. Evidence this 1952 Ford F1 Hot Rod Pickup from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. 1952 Ford F1 PickupThere are a lot of upgrades done like you might expect in the '70s and '80s. The roof was chopped, power doors and it uses a 1969 Camaro suspension. Naturally it has a Chevy 350 small block enine with a Turbo 350 automatic transmission, while front disc brakes were added and it has power steering as well as power brakes. The Canadian seller says the dual exhaust sounds beautiful. We think you'll find the price interesting also. This car will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is only $19,900.

Often, the cars that will be featured in the DEAL of the DAY are real nice cars but may not be the numbers matching investments ... not at these prices anyway. But this 1970 Plymouth Road 1970 Plymouth Road RunnerRunner from New Middleton, Ohio may end up the exception to the rule. The seller says the numbers on the engine and transmission both match the RM21 car VIN. He says it has a 383 Commando with an automatic Torqueflite, all original sheet metal (except for the Air Grabber hood, of course.) He had that installed when it was painted in 1980. He says it has dealer installed Chrysler aluminum intake with Mopar #s on it and D/C chrome valve covers. He said he always tried to replace any replacement parts with NOS or OEM parts. Do you have the phone in your hand yet? It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. He is only asking $23,500.

Don't forget! Have these cars inspected before you buy. One man's great opportunity is another man's nightmare. You have to know if the car is right for you. See the Cars On Line Inspection Service at

Collectors value the stock original cars even when they aren't muscle cars. A 1941 Chevrolet 4-Dr Sport Sedan was listed this week from Foley, Minnesota. The seller says that it comes with a clear 1941 Chevrolet 4-Dr Sedantitle, and that the car runs, drives and stops very well. He said it is obvious that much care has been taken to keep it in original and running condition. He says that you will notice this when you check out the redone stainless trim on the car. He says it also has new brakes and suspension, NOS wiper motor with repo blades and arms, Denman 670/16 WWW tires, Artillery wheels, new 6-volt battery and trim rings. He says it has a stock drivetrain and that all the gauges work. He said it will need a new interior and wiring. Yet, it will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. He is only asking $5,500.

A one-off year Mercury that you don't see advertised very often ... here is a possible diamond in the rough for an avid collector. The price certainly won't scare you away. A 1958 Mercury 1958 Mercury MontereyMonterey 2-Dr Hardtop is a significant find. This one is from Ontario, Oregon. The seller says it looks, runs and drives great, and he assures buyers that it is 100 percent rust free. The paint and interior are as you see them in these photos. He says it has a strong running 383 ci Mercury motor, an automatic transmission with push button shift, a high dollar stereo system, newer tires and chrome wheels. "This car made a 3000k mile trip last year with no issues at all," says the seller. It will be our DEAL of the DAY feature on our front page. The asking price is $18,900.

Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
