2013 Barrett-Jackson Auction

The crowd got to its feet to cheer a record sale at the first ever Barrett-Jackson Auction here in Reno. A 2014 Shelby GT500 Convertible was sold for $500,000 in a great moment for the prime time Saturday auction sale. All of the money taken in for this car will go to the Brain Injury Association of America. The association supports brain research and injury prevention.

The car that is shown here will not be the one that the buyer receives however, because the actual car sold hasn't been built yet. The winning bidder has purchased the rights to own the last 2014 Shelby GT500 Convertible to roll off the line for the model year, a prized acquisition for any collector. The actual car may not look like the one shown here on the auction block. The winning bidder will be able to chose his own color scheme and striping options. The special sale was shown live on SPEED TV on Saturday night.

It is the first year that the Barrett-Jackson Auction company has held a sale at Hot August Nights. They could have billed it as the "world's most noted collector car auction company meets the world's largest collector car extravaganza," Hot August Nights. It seems only fitting that destiny should bring these two together.

A 1934 Ford Custom Roadster was another big sale on Saturday in prime time at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Reno, Nevada. This unique custom was built by Hall of Fame legendary builder Rick Dore for the 2004 SEMA Show. Dore also built a one-off custom chopper motorcycle in this same color scheme. It was included in the sale.

Fairly early in the sale, this one-of-a-kind 1933 Willys HiBoy Roadster was sold. It also was built by Hall of Fame custom car builder Rick Dore. Dore's work is well appreciated in this area as well as in northern California. Several of his custom cars were in the sale today. This one was Lot # 647. It sold for $74,250 including the buyers commission.

We spotted this 1958 Chevy Cameo Carrier Pickup truck in the list of cars to be auctioned off on Saturday. It was Lot # 668, midway through the sale. It sold for $38,500 with buyer's commission.

We were watching for cars that are often available for sale in the Cars On listings. A favorite among Cars On buyers are Camaros. This 1969 Camaro SS L89 with the aluminum head 396/375 hp engine was in the Barrett-Jackson sale on Saturday, Lot # 699.2. It is so rare. Compare it to the ones in our Camaro Section to see if you can guess what price this one will go for. There was also a pair of 1969 Camaro Z/28s in the sale. They were Lot # 675 (early on Saturday) and Lot # 721.

Cars On newsletter readers will remember our preview of the upcoming Warner Brothers movie "The Snake & the Mongoo$e."

On display in the preview room of the Barrett-Jackson Auction are the original race cars and haulers that Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and Tom "Mongoose" McEwen used back in the day. These vehicles play an important role in the movie which is about how Prudhomme and McEwen monetized the sport of racing by picking up sponsors like Hot Wheels. They were dressed up and restored for the movie.

On Saturday Don Prudhomme was on hand to sign autographs. Although this movie will not be released until September 2013, it is making its premier here in Reno during Hot August Nights. A general public showing of the film is happening now at local theaters here in Reno. Some of the stars of the movie will be on hand for a red carpet premier at the Grand Sierra Theater tonight, including this years Playmate of the Year. Cars On will be there. This is a tough job, but somebody has got to do it.

On Saturday night after the Barrett-Jackson Auction a red carpet, Hollywood style premier of the movie was held at the Grand Sierra Theater. Some of the stars of the movie were there, plus the subject of the movie Don Prudhomme was on hand (shown above, third from the right.) Next to him stands Playboy Playmate of the Year Jaclyn Swedberg, and to his left actor Richard Blake who played Tom "Mongoose" McEwen in the movie.

Chevrolet has a special display in the Barrett-Jackson exhibition hall where they are debuting this 2014 Camaro Z/28. Notice it has a special hood similar to the ZL1. The Z/28 will be new for Chevrolet for 2014. 'Bout time.
