Carroll Shelby was known the world over as a top sports car builder and racing genius. His little Shelby Cobra is still revered today as the most famous sports car ever built. His Shelby name gave credibility to Ford's Mustang and took it from being a little Pony car to a full on muscle car. He was the only person to win the 24 Hours of Lemans as a driver in 1959, a manufacturer in 1964 and as racing team manager for Ford in 1966 and 1967. He had nothing to prove to anybody.
But still there was a part of Shelby that wanted to design and build an exotic sports car from the ground up. In 1990, Carroll Shelby was preparing to undergo both a heart transplant and a kidney transplant. But with plans in place, his team at Shelby American began work on the ultimate American exotic car, the Shelby Series 1. As Shelby recovered, he was involved in putting key people in place to get a prototype built. They even were able to find a rear transaxle to fit their design and a six-speed gearbox made by the German company, ZF. The aerospace styled chassis was made from aluminum with honeycombed sections. It was half the weight of a Corvette, but twice as strong. The new suspension used racing technology mounted in-board. It was designed in the era when carbon-fiber bodies were just beginning to become common. This one had it. The car was a masterpiece.
This week, our friends at Fast Lane Classic Cars in St Charles, Missouri are selling a 1999 Shelby Series 1, one of the early cars, #004 out of 249 produced. Silver with red stripes, it has the 4.0 Liter DOHC V8 Oldsmobile Aurora engine rated at 320 horesepower, with a 6-speed ZF transaxle. It has the dynamic 18" Shelby wheels. Born to be collectible, they tell us this Series 1 has only 739 miles!
You will find it for sale today in the Exotic Car Section of the Cars-On-Line website. No other American made car can compare with this one-year only design and production. It was another monumental success for the Shelby brand.

We are at the Fall Carlisle Collector Car Show and Flea Market this weekend, September 28 through October 2, 2022. This is more fun than we Baby Boomers should be allowed. There are 82 acres of cars and parts here on display. We were at the Carlisle Auction yesterday to see this 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible cross the auction stage. It was from the Bill Miller Collection, and was sold for $76,000 at the hammer. Bill Miller is one of the co-founders of the event started in 1974. The auction will run through Friday. Than the big automotive swap meet will be held on Saturday. Car collectors like the Carlisle Collector Car Flea Market as a source for new and used parts.
In the second part of our series on Winterizing Your Classic Car, we are taking some tips from Speed Academy. They are specifically talking about storing a race car for the winter, but the same major principles apply to any hobby car. Click here to view their detailed video for their 12-point program for winterizing a car. There are six main steps that everyone agrees are the important points to remember to do.
1. Wash car thoroughly 2. Change the oil. 3. Check coolant strength
3. Fill gas tank, use fuel stabilizer 4. Use a battery tender 5. Protect tires from flat spots 6. Keep out the critters.
They go over a lot of detail on each of these points which can be helpful in winterizing your car. If you follow Speed Academy's suggestions you will have a better experience next spring when you want to pull the car out for a ride.
Here is another helpful video from Eastwood on what products you can use to accomplish the six-point list above.

We are seeing a lot of cars being listed from Canada these days. That is because the U.S. dollar is so strong compared to other currencies. This week, R&R Classic Cars out of Val Caron, Ontario, Canada listed this 1974 Pontiac Trans Am SD-455 Super Duty for sale. This rare muscle car has the legendary Pontiac SD-455 motor, one of the last high performance motors produced before the end of the muscle car era. They tell us the motor and transmission are numbers matching. It was professionally repainted its original color of Admiralty Blue 11 years ago, and it comes with Pontiac Historical Society documentation. And, yes, those are real Pontiac Honeycomb wheels.
Hollywood film stars such as Johnny Weissmuller, Al Jolson, Tom Mix and Clark Gable were known to drive the legendary "coffin nosed" Cord automobiles. Airplane millionaire Howard Hughes was said to be enamoured of its innovative technology. Even today, this 1937 Cord 812 Phaeton is one of the best handling cars ever made. It is being offered for sale this week by Ellingson Motorcars of Rogers, Minnesota. The 289 Lycoming V8 engine pushes power through the 4-speed semi-automatic transmission to the front wheels. The shifter is on the dash. It was an engineering marvel of the time. It comes from an esteemed collection. They say the chrome and brightwork are show quality.
Here is an amazing ride. Dressed as a 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator, this unique resto mod Cougar has a supercharged 5.0 Coyote motor mated to a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission. It is shod with staggered American Racing Shelby wheels with a massive 315mm wide rear Toyo Proxies. Because of all the power, the braking system has been upgraded to Wilwood brakes with drilled and slotted rotors, and suspension has been upgraded with sway bars, tubular upper and lower control arms, and frame connectors. Ridetech coil-overs absorb the road while the rear end is a Ford 9" strengthened by a 4-link. Is it better than original? He-he-he, yeah!
They are finally here! The one everyone has been waiting for has arrived. Here is the much anticipated 2022 Rivian R1T EV-Pickup, the all electric pickup truck of the future. Rivian made waves when it went public last year. Now you are beginning to see them a lot on the West Coast. This is the first one we have seen on the used market. It is being offered for sale at Response Motors in Mountain View, California. Lots of storage, USB ports and screens to keep you in the digital world. It is just 239 miles from new. The all electric pickup is said to have the equivalent of 835 horsepower and pull 908 foot-pounds of torque. The cabin is called "vegan" and is said to be made of all recycled materials.
Justin from Collectible Motorcar of Atlanta shows us a 1955 Ford F100 Resto Mod in their new video. He shows you the body lines, bed and a gorgeous custom interior. This eye candy perfect custom classic is powered by a small block 302 motor with all the right stuff. Air conditioning was done right; it has power steering and power brakes. Then he shows you the clean undercarriage. Chrome looks great, doesn't it? Click the video window above for a full tour and listen to it start up.

This just might be your Huckleberry. A private party seller from Gambrills, Maryland is offering his 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-Door Hardtop for sale. He says it still has just 25,000 original miles, and has won First Place and Best of Show awards in its time. He says it has the 283 ci V8 with a Power-Pac and a 3-speed on the column. Look at the photo of th tri-tone interior. They are only original once. Is there another one with miles this low anywhere?

This is big! A Missouri based Mopar collector just dropped the price on his 1970 Plymouth Cuda. He describes it as a "Beautiful laser straight rotisserie restored true BS and U code Cuda with the Super Trak Pak, Pistol Grip 4 speed and Dana 60 4.10 with the 18 spline tranny." He says it is laser straight down the sides. The shaker was added. He was originally asking $89,995, but just this week lowered the price to $79,900.

Our interest was peaked when a 1964 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 was listed for sale this week by a private party seller from Carterville, Illinois. It may not be widely appreciated as to how rare this '64 Olds really are. To find one in this kind of condition is even rarer. The seller says this 2-Door hardtop still has just 36k original miles. He says the interior is "mint." It comes with a "recent tune-up" on the Rocket 394 ci V8 with a 2-barrel carb, and new "brakes, exhaust and tires." Of course, it has an automatic transmission. The seller says it runs and drives "excellent." You should have it inspected before you buy to verify what the seller is stating. But hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because the asking price is $23,900.
You have to admit, the 1941 Plymouth Deluxe Sedan had a beautifully designed front valance. That split grille with the chrome trimmed spear from the nose down was a handsome treatment. This well preserved treasure is being offered for sale this week at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. They regularly have a car like this in our Deal of the Day feature. They put it on their test track and found it accelerated smoothly and handled well. They said the brakes were a bit soft and the lights and horn have issues. You should have a pre-purchase inspection done to get a full condition class report. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday with an asking price of $13,500.
The secret of success for Mercury in the 1950's was their ability to capture the mood of the modern post-war buyer. Their progressive front end styling and sculptured body look were very appealing to the younger generations. They had a custom look. This 1954 Mercury Monterey 2-Door Hardtop is an excellent example. It is being offered for sale at Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. The original Y block V8 is coupled to a 3-speed manual gear box with over drive. They say the body is straight. You should have it inspected to get a full condition class report before you buy. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday because the asking price is $26,750.
Plymouth came out with one of the most flamboyant body styles in automotive history when they debuted the Valiant model in 1960. Throughout the 1960's this compact car model with the reliable Slant 6 motor was incredibly popular and kept Plymouth new car salesman in the money throughout that era. This 1961 Plymouth Valiant is in remarkable condition as per the photos in the ad, being offered for sale by Streetside Classics in Phoenix, Arizona. It may have been a dry climate car. You should ask about its history when you call. They say it has the 225 ci Slant 6 motor and a three-speed automatic transmission. Have it inspected before you buy. But it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is $14,995.
Here is one for the mechanically inclined. Old station wagons are in high demand. You can see from the photos that the 1953 Ford Country Sedan is a mild custom. The condition class is not immediately identifiable from the description so you should have it inspected before you buy. It has a Flathead V8 motor. They say the inteior seats are nice. It has that old school look and feel. They also note that there is some bodywork that needs to be tended to on the passenger fender. A pre-purchase inspection would be in order to find out more. The old station wagon is a real find for the right buyer. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $14,995.
Without question every Rolls-Royce ever produced is collectible. The elegant allure of timeless luxury travels with it every mile. That's why this 1990 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur II is so interesting. It is being offered for sale by Beverly Hills Car Cllub in Los Angeles. Black with a red interior, they say it has 84,612 miles on it. The California car comes with a clean Carfax and is equipped with an automatic transmission, air conditioning, power windows, power steering, power seats and 4-wheel disc brakes. They say it is mechanically sound but it would be prudent to have it inspected before you buy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price is $19,950.
Beverly Hills Car Club also has this 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider for sale this week at a very interesting price point. Finished in a color scheme of silver combined with a red and black interior, they say it is nicely equipped and mechanically sound. It has a manual transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, Jaeger instruments, twin exhaust finishers, aluminum door sill plates, three-spoke steering wheel, chrome bumper with rubber guards and alloy wheels with Dunlop tires. It comes with the owner's manual booklet, maintenance booklet with stamps, manufacturer's literature, and service receipt copies dating from March 1983 through December 2019. The price is only $14,750.
