When Specialty Sales Classics listed a 1939 Packard 1703 Super Eight Convertible Coupe for sale this week, one key line in the ad copy grabbed our attention. The ad reads, "he (the owner) informs us that this is a Darrin Coach Work body on a 127” wheelbase chassis." The styling on the car reminds us of the early Howard "Dutch" Darrin designs for his Packard 120's and Victorias. Could this be one of the early Packard conversions done at the Sunset Drive shop that Darrin owned and operated back in 1939?
Specialty Sales Classics out of Fairfield, California has a rare 1939 Packard 1703 Convertible Coupe for sale, one of the famous Super Eight Packards of that era. The completely original condition is noted by Specialty Sales Classics in their ad description. They have it listed in the Cars-On-Line Packard Section. With a laser-straight body, fantastic chrome, trim, paint and accessories, this is perhaps the most pristine example you will find.
But the reference to "Dutch" Darrin is what makes this car so interesting. More research needs to be published on this. Historians estimate that Darrin probably only completed eight or nine Packard conversions in 1939. Many of them were done on 120 models. Far fewer were Super Eights.
Find out more when you read the story on our blog page this week at MyDreamCar.online. There is even a short video where you can hear it start and run. Then use the comment box below the story to tell us about your Packard memories. We love to hear your stories.

We are at the Raleigh Classic Auction in Youngsville, North Carolina this weekend. Our newsletter readers know that this is one of our favorite collector car auctions. It is being held at the Capitol Auto Auction facility, April 30-May 1, 2021. Cars-On-Line’s car show team will be on hand to bring you all the action and record auction prices. Newsletter readers will want to join us for our traditional "Auction Watching Party" on our Facebook page on Saturday. As the top cars in the auction cross the auction stage, we will be discussing them with our followers. There are over 300 choice collector cars in the sale, including many with low miles and several collections. For a preview of the auction tap this link to our Raleigh Classic blog page.
We received a press release from Hennessey Performance this week about their new Hennessey Mammoth 1000 based on the new Dodge Ram TRX SUV. They bill it as the largest SUV with seven passenger luxury seating. Boasting 1,012 hp from its supercharged 6.2-liter V8, Hennessey says it is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds. So it is probably the fastest SUV on the market also. Several body mods were required to get the extra luxury accomodation for seven passengers. The conversion incorporates a sizable rear-side window and adds a rear video screen while retaining excellent luggage space behind the third row seats. You will have a virtual exclusive if you own one. They are only building 20 of them. Here is a link to the news release.

For a Mopar collector, it doesn't get any better than this. Here is an original R Code 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T with only 48k original miles. Man, what a find! This survivor class car has never been restored but still looks fresh today. The private seller from Canada says his Hemi Challenger still retains all original sheet metal, trunk floor and floor pans. He describes the body as being laser straight and "gorgeous." It is documented with the factory fender tag, driver's door tag and body numbers intact. It is a B5 blue with a super rare V6B blue longitude stripe. And it has the A32 4.10 Dana Super Trac Pack rear end. The seller believes it to be a "true one-of-one."
Did you ever see one of those Pro Touring Resto Mod cars go through the Barrett-Jackson where the bidding gets into the hundreds of thousands of dollars? This 1969 Pro Touring Camaro is one of those cars. The private seller from Manchester, New Hampshire used over 400 words in his description just to list all the custom mods in this build. Starting with the engine he has and LS6 638 rwhp / 732 fwhp w/ 15 psi Comp Cams, Mahle Pistons, Manley Rods, Pro-Charger D1SC, custom fabricated Bell intercooler, Wilson Billet intake manifold; and continuing on through the driveline with G-Froce T-56 6-speed w/Viper case, Lakewood bell housing, McLeod twin disc hydraulic clutch, Denney's Drive Shaft, 9" rear axle housing, Gear FX 3rd member, Mark Williams aluminum 3rd member case, Tru-Trac differential 3:55 gear ratio, NASCAR Pinion Support, Moser 31-spline axles. You see what I mean? Somebody really knew how to build a Pro Touring resto mod. This car is amazing.
Cruisin Classics gives us a real detailed analysis of this 1970 Ford Torino GT in a video walk-around tour on their ad page. While panning across the beautiful finish they tell us it has a 351 ci motor built by Street Machines in North Carolina with a nice cam and fed by a Sniper EFI. Everything inside looks new in the video. The three spoke wheels are a nice touch when you see them up close.

The engine is a Ford 351 Windsor with Roush cylinder heads, roller rocker arms, Edelbrock intake, Holley carb and open headers. But it has no exhaust. Motor will start but it needs a radiator.

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted in the DEAL of the DAY feature on the Cars On Line homepage. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the homepage!
Our top DEAL of the DAY this week is a 1972 Ford Ranchero GT with the 429 big block motor. It is a real N Code GT they say. The private seller is from Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. He has some good work into the car, so he says he would be comfortable driving it anywhere. But it could be described as a partial project because he points out things that need to be done. He says the paint looks better in pics than in person, and he has not had the AC charged, horn does not work, plus there is a small dent on lower tailgate. If interested, you should have an inspection report done by the COL Inspection Service. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $18,500.
In a garage in Dewey, Arizona is where this vintage 1927 Chevrolet Capitol A Coupe is housed. The Arizona owner says he is the second owner of the classic Chevrolet. According to the story, the first owner was the mayor of Flagstaff. He says it is all original with a 2.8 liter overhead valve 4-cylinder motor, 3-speed transmission and single carburetor. The car has been converted to a 12-volt with alternator. It was totally restored inside and out with a rebuilt engine. It still has the original owners manual. They say it runs and drives well. And they even say it has the original glass and original steering wheel. This is surely a treasure worth preserving. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $18,500.
North Shore Classics just posted this 1936 Ford Tudor Sedan for sale. It appears to be an original Ford sedan with the Flathead V8 engine and manual transmission. North Shore Classics tells us it even appears to have original paint. You should have it inspected thorugh the COL Inspection Service to discover the condition class it is in. But just look at the interior in the photos. It is so clean looking. (Click here to see a video walk-around tour of the car.) In the photo of the odometer you can see that it is just showing 68,772 miles. That is amazing for such an old car. They say it has new tires and lots of receipts for work done. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. You don't find cars this nice for $26,900.
If you are going to build a Jaguar SS 100 replica, it had better be authentic looking. Here is one that is qualified for export and priced to sell quickly. They say it was manufactured in 1986 in original gel-coat, powered by a 3.8 Liter GM engine with a Turbo 350 transmission. So it is reliable and fun to drive. The all-American drive train makes it easy to maintain. And boy does it get the looks, says Classic Cars of Sarasota. They are selling the car this week in the Cars-On-Line Jaguar Section online. They have included dozens of detailed photos in the ad. They say it comes complete with both the soft top and a tonneau cover. It will be our DEAL of the DAY early next week, if it lasts that long. Their asking price is only $14,900.
These Pontiacs are getting harder to find, and seem to get better looking with age. Streetside Classics in Tampa, Florida has this 1951 Pontiac Chieftain in its corret Bershire Green finish. They say the body is straight and is highlighted by full brightwork in an original package which includes the intricate grille up front, wraparound bumpers, sweeping side trim and emblems in the rear fenders. Pontiac's straight 8 motor earned a reputation for being both smooth and reliable, as in a more luxurious upscale model. This one comes upgraded with a cruiser attitude with the color-matched windshield sunshade, smoothie wheels, and whitewall tires. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later this week because they are only asking $16,995.
A very nice 1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III is available for sale through private owner in Federal Way, Washington. The Bright Aqua paint with black leather interior and black vinyl top look pretty good for its age. The seller says the car has about 90,000 miles. He estimates that it is in drive quality condition. Although it has been garaged all of its life, it was recently purchased after its elderly owners passed. They say the interior is in good to excellent condition, but needs to be cleaned. The front right passenger fender needs to be professionally repainted due to pulling in and out of the garage. All the chrome looks good and is all there. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is $12,000.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
