One of Chevrolet's most famous muscle cars was never envisioned by Chevrolet. It was conjured up from the company's fleet ordering system. Chevrolet dealers all around the country became "hot rod" shops when the Central Office Processing Order(COPO) system for fleet orders was discovered by a central figure of the muscle car era. Chevrolet's Product Promotions Manager, Vince Piggins, ignited the muscle car revolution when he showed Chevrolet dealers like Don Yenko how to use the COPO ordering system to get factory built Camaros with special L72 427/425 performance engines. Chevrolet executives had a ban on ordering motors bigger than the 400 ci V8 in anything smaller than a full size car or a Corvette. But Piggins knew there was a market for the big block L72 motors in Camaros and Chevelles. So he showed some of the Chevrolet dealerships around the country how to order using the COPO system. The rest is history.
This week, Legendary Motorcar Company, the famous restoration shop, has posted a 1969 COPO Camaro L72 427 for sale in beautiful Hugger Orange finish. Having received a complete no expense spared rotisserie nut and bolt restoration, the COPO Camaro has been gone over from top to bottom. You will notice in the photos that the paint has been wet sanded and polished to a glass-like shine. Even the undercarriage was redone and refinished with factory reminiscent "overspray" and shows like a factory original. The L72 427 ci engine was detailed to "as new" condition from the factory.
For a complete history on how the COPO Camaros came to be, read the full report on this car on our MyDreamCar.online blog site today. This particular 1969 COPO Camaro L72 427/425 would be the perfect centerpiece of any muscle car collection. It has both pedigree and provenance. What more could you ask for?

NASCAR will be the first sportiing event to make a comeback AC (after coronavirus.) NASCAR has announced a 400-mile race at Darlington on May 17. One significant difference. There will be no fans in the stands. The race will be run without spectators. It sounds as though the race will be televised live on FOX. The race is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. It will be followed by another Cup race that week on May 20 at Darlington, and then the Memorial Day spectacular, the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 24, 2020 at 6 PM. Again, there will be no fans in the stands. But at least we will have some live sports to watch for a change. It looks as though NASCAR will attempt to run a shortened season for the rest of the year.
In their recent newsletter, Hagerty published an article by Phillip Thomas on Hot Rodding history. He focuses in on how hot rodding evolved, and how custom car styling happened on the post World War II streets of America. Click here to read his article in Hagerty Drivers Club magazine. If you ever wondered what terms such as "hiboy" or "channeling" mean, he gives you a pretty good short history on their etymology. It is a quick read and, we figure it is pretty intuitive for the car collector today. Hagerty Drivers Club magazine is a benefit of being a Hagerty Insurance client. The magazine comes out once a month, and has articles written by some of the top collectors in America as well as celebrities such as Jay Leno.

In 1962, Aston Martin made just 70 of the special DB4C Convertible Series IV SS Vantage edition sports cars. And just a handful of those were produced with factory overdrive. This is one of them. (Follow this link to review more ad photos.) It is being offered for sale at Gullwing Motor Cars in Astoria, New York. These days it is almost impossible to find one. Gullwing is offering it as having matching numbers and mechanically excellent. They say it underwent a restoration about 25 years ago. It is accompanied by its factory build sheet. Amazing! Gullwing rates this DB4C as an incredible find, and a Blue Chip investment for any collector. You might look a lifetime and never find another one. They say this incredibly rare and highly coveted DB4 still shows very well, as you can see in the photos.
Did you know that Chevrolet offered an SS 396 version of the 1971 Camaro right from the factory? Indeed, here is a 1971 Camaro SS 396 with the LS3 engine code for that year. It is being offered for sale by Red Hills Rods & Classics out of St George, Utah. They tell us it is the finest example you'll find anywhere. Only 1,533 big block Camaros were sold that year. Out of those, only 233 were built with the Muncie M-20 4-speed transmission. Camaro expert Jerry McNeish has told them this one is the only LS3 optioned this way. So it is, indeed, a one-of-one. It was visually inspected and certified by Jerry MacNeish in December 2014. The color is called Placer Gold. Look at the photos in the ad. They say no detail was left untouched in a true nut & bolt restoration.
It was Ira Duntov's contribution to the Corvette that he piloted the development of the high horsepower engines that made the Corvette so desirable in the mid-1960's. Here is a 1967 Corvette Convertible that was factory endowed with a 327/350 horsepower small block which would outperform most cars of its day. It is being presented by Mershons out of Springfield, Ohio. They did an interesting video to show you how it sounds and how it looks in a walk-around. Click the video window above to view it here in the newsletter. You will find many more interesting sales videos from Mershons in this week's edition of the COL newsletter.

Is there another muscle car more rare than the 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Convertible? Only nine of them were supposedly produced. So it is not unusual that someone would buld a first-year Trans Am replica like this one. It comes from Ellingson Motorcars out of Rogers, Minnesota this week. It has a 400 ci V8 with a 4-speed. You have to come and see this one.

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted in the DEAL of the DAY feature on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page!
There are some very special deals coming your way this week. This 1967 Dodge Coronet from Arizona should whett the whistle of most Mopar collectors. A driver quality price for a big block Mopar is pretty hard to find. It was an original 383 ci V8 car which not has a transplanted 440 ci. The private seller says it is "super solid and runs great." He says it was a factory air car but is missing the compressor and brackets. Being an Arizona car, he says it has a stunning interior and still has the orignal floors and under coating. It still has the original dash, gauges and lights which all work, according to the description. He says you can turn the key and drive. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is only $15,500. Hurry!
A baby blue 1932 Ford Roadster was listed for sale this week by Classic Car Deals, a classic car internet broker. If you read the Hagerty story above about early hot rod styles, the look and stance of this one are iconic. The seller says it has a 350 Vortex engine with 400 Turbo Hydromatic automatic transmission. The ad does not have very many photos in it so you will want to have it inspected before you buy. (With an inspection you get a five page report and close to a hundred photos.) But they say it is clean underneath, and that the interior was done just a year ago. You will note the old school tripower velocity stacks feeding the engine. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is affordable at just $26,995.
Newsletter readers may recognize this 1949 Plymouth Custom Deluxe from Delta, Colorado. The private seller has listed it with Cars-On-Line once before. But never at this price. This was a quality build, an unusual look that was built to be a show car. With a fresh 270 Baby Hemi engine, builit with Clay Smith cam, Offenhauser dual carburetor, dual point ignition and much more. Wait till you here how it sounds. It has shaved doors, trunk, Fenched '55 T-Bird grille, Frenched headlights, electric doors, electric windows and electric antenna. The interior is complete tuck n' roll with matching headlinere. It has air conditioning and rack and pinion steering. You'll notice it has been lowered 4". There is just too much to note on this custom beauty. Best of all is the price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is only $15,750. This is the sleeper deal this week.
This sharp looking Garnet red 1962 Oldsmobile F-85 Convertible comes with low miles and a very interesting aluminum 215 ci V8 engine. Remember the 215 aluminum engines from General Motors? Wow, what great gas mileage! It is beiing offered for sale this week by Rock Solid Motorsports in Elkhart, Indiana. It comes mostly original, according to the description, with only 32,329 miles showing on the odometer. They say the white convertible top is new and the top cylinders and pump have have been rebuilt. The 3-speed automatic transmission has been reconditioned, and shifting is one by the dash mounted lever. (See photo.) It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price is only $19,900.
Before the Mustang, Ford's most loved little sports car was the Falcon. This Rangoon red 1963 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible was a hot seller for female buyers. Some might have said it was a "secretary's car" implying that working girls loved their little sports car convertibles. It has the 170 ci 6 cylinder motor and a T10 4-speed. It is also being offered by Classic Car Deals, an internet broker selling this car for their client. They say it has 52,000 miles which they believe are original miles. They say it has an upgraded electronic distributor, new paiint, new rear bumper, new front bucket seats an a new convertible boot. It also has new front brakes and radiator. The seller says it runs and drives very well. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price is $14,995.
This next one is a bit of a project, but Beverly Hills Car Club tells us it only needs some light cosmetics to turn it into a great driver quality car. It is a 1969 Corvette with T-tops and matching numbers (which will be important to Corvette collectors.) Beverly Hills Car Club is a well known classic car hub in the Los Angeles area. They say it comes in its original factory color code of Lemans blue with bright blue interior. It has a 4-speed and 350 V8 engine, and is equipped with power steering, Holley carburetor, 4-wheel disc brakes and American Racing wheels. Because of its originality it remains very collectible. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price is $21,750.
Oh, man, was this a hot color back in the day. The Mercedes 450 SL came along in the 1970's and quickly became a sign of sophistication and style for the Yuppie class of suburban Americans. If you had one of these in your driveway, you were showing off. This 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL has provenance because it was owned by Melvin Simon of Simon Property Group, a shopping center developer in the U.S. Simon had also been a movie producer. Showing just over 50k miles, this fine imported sports car has always been well taken care of with a clean N.I.C.B. report. It is being offered for sale by Midwest Car Exchange, a classic car dealer in Alsip, Illinois. They say it has a smooth running 4.5L V8, and the automatic transmission was just recently rebuilt. Here are some of the comments from happy sellers who were nice enough to tell us about their experience advertising on the Cars On Line website.
"Congratulations to the buyer of a high powered 1964 Dodge 330 Ramcharger. They called us on the phone last night after just receiving it and said they loved the car and it was "rowdy". Thanks to Cars-On-Line.com. The best way to sell a classic car that is around. Highly recommended to bring sellers and buyers together and eliminate the tire kickers and low ballers."
"Very good service, had many interested buyers. All in all a good experience," said Gary after placing a $45.00 Run Until Sold ad. His beautiful 1961 Chevy Impala SOLD because of the exposure he received from Cars-On-Line.com.
