With Packard beginning to fall behind and Chrysler moving into the performance car market, it left GM's Cadillac division as the leading luxury car maker in America. In 1954, Cadillac was making a statement when they introduced the 1954 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible with its signature anodized aluminum rear lower quarter beauty panels.
This week, Daniel Schmitt & Company out of St Louis have an Alpine White example for sale. It comes with a red and white leather interior and black power folding convertible top. It should be noted that this is an investment grade classic Cadillac with lots of provenance. It was just released from a prestigious collection. The product of an extensive, no expense spared restoration, it has been recognized by the Antique Automobile Club of America as a National First Prize award recipient. They say nearly $300,000 was invested in this restoration.
Today, the classic Eldorado convertible performs as well as it looks, Daniel Schmitt & Company write in their description. It has the 331 ci V8 with overhead valves, Hydramatic transmission, independent coil spring front and semi-elliptical rear suspension with live axle and four-wheel power assisted drum brakes. The 12-volt system was standard by this time. Click here to read a long list of options and features.
Introduced in 1953 as a one-off fresh build for Cadillac's 50th Anniversary, the Eldorado was styled by Fleetwood and introduced in the traveling GM Motorama. It made such an impression that in 1954 the Eldorado was added to the regular Cadillac model line. While the first-year 1953 Eldorado cost $7,000, when they added it to the regular lineup in 1954, the cost new was $5,738. That was still a lot of money, limiting orders to just 2,150 for 1954.
Interestingly, the 1954 Eldorado Convertible was enjoyed in its day by a well-healed connoisseur of fine automobiles. Come to think of it, that still would be true today.

We are pretty excited about our new Cars-On-Line Photo Parts Section which we intend to unveil for the first time next week. We wanted to give our newsletter readers a sneak preview of the Classic-Auto-Parts page we have just developed. The key feature is that all of the classic parts ads will have photos so you have a better idea of what you are buying and the advertiser can display key features of the parts they have for sale. How many times have you bought the wrong part when you could have determined from a photo whether it was a left hand side piece of chrome rather than a right hand side piece?
As a special perk for newsletter readers, we are offering the opportunity for you to list your Photo Parts Ads for free this week. Just go to Classic-Auto-Parts.com and check it out. List all the parts you want with photos, no limit on the number of ads you can list this week. (When you go through the checkout a pre-filled credit card number will auto-fill so you will not be charged. You do not have to give us your credit card number either.) You will become a member based on your email address so you should save your password. You will be able to edit your ads and edit your photos. It's so easy, you can take a photo with your cell phone and list your ad right from your phone. You've gotta' try this.

The internet scammers are at it again. Newsletter readers know that we always are on the lookout for scam artists trying to pass bad checks off to our honest advertisers. (Be sure to read our blog on Identifying Internet Scams online.) We have been seeing more of this type of activity recently. In order to avoid the "bad cashier's check" scam, we've been recommending that sellers just tell the buyer you'll only accept a wire transfer. Then set up a separate account with the cooperation of your bank to accept the money for a special transaction. That is the best way to "not get stung" by a scammer. Scammers will lose interst when they know you won't accept a check for your car. They don't actually want to get your car anyway. They just want to send you a check for more than the agreed upon price so you have to refund them some money, or make a payment for them to a fake transport company which they set up. Be careful out there, and stay safe.

There is a reason why our readers have never seen one of these British luxury cars before. It is because only four of them are known to exist. This is a 1961 Alvis 3 Litre TD21 Convertible Coupe, a British sports saloon made by Alvis between late 1958 and 1963. It was a revised version of the Alvis TC 108G, but the body was done by Park Ward, well known for their coackwork on Rolls-Royce customs. Suspension was similar to the Alvis TC 21, independent at the front using coil springs with leaf springs at the rear. However a front anti-roll bar was added. Wire spoked wheels became an option. From 1959 on, the brake setup was changed to discs up front and drums at the rear. This one was just listed by Classic Cars of Sarasota in Florida. You should see the photos. We hope they do a video next week.

In 1953, Buick introduced the first-ever Buick Skylark to celebrate they 50th Anniversary in business. It was a benchmark car for its styling as well as mechanical innovations. For the new car buying public in 1953 it may have seemed like a custom hot rod. It was slung low with a lowered roof line, special front fenders with no port-holes, and a full line of luxury options that they knew American buyers would want. The 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible you see here is being offered for sale this week by Ellingson Motorcars in Rogers, Minnesota. It has the new 322 ci V8, Dynaflow automatic, power steering and power brakes, power windows and power seat. The Kelsey-Hayes wheels were a beautiful accent to the new styling. What a find. Click here to view their interesting walk-around video. These early Buick Skylark convertibles are among the top collector cars of all time.

The Raleigh Classic Auction, August 21-22, 2020, is fast approaching. Cars-On-Line newsletter readers have become aware that one of our favorite events of the year, the Raleigh Classic, will be held this year for the first time in Youngsville, North Carolina at the Capitol Auto Auction facility. The Raleigh Auction tends to bring in some of the top collector cars from the Southeastern U.S. Many of them are low miles and in nice original condition. Here are some of the cars already consigned to sell. Finally, a collector car event worth attending again. There is still time to register to bid.
This is one of the strongest inventories of vintage orignal Ford classics we've ever seen. Several collections will be represented for liquidation. This 1931 Ford Model A Woodie Depot Wagon features a Baker-Rauling body in maple and spruce with basswood top bows. It is a spectacular AACA 1st place Grand National Award winner in 2016 and MAFCA Excellence for Restoration Award winner. It is finished in beautiful tan with saddle interior.
A 1967 Plymouth GTX was just added to the auction inventory for the Raleigh Classic. This car is not being represented as "low miles" specifically, but not the odometer photo in the ad. Check that out. It is a true GTX muscle car with factory features and one repaint 35 years ago. 1967 is the first year for the GTX and an excellent year to collect. This one will be one of the featured cars in the Saturday sale.
The Raleigh Classic is an excellent place to find stock original classic vehicles. Here is a rare 1936 Dodge Pickup which will be sold on Saturday. The auction credentials tell us it is a rust free example with only 46k actual miles. It comes with an inline 6 cylinder engine and a 3-speed manual transmission. They tell us this rare and seldom seen example runs and drives great. See more photos at the link.
What is so fascinating about the Raleigh Classic is that they seem to get some great "low-miles" cars in their auction inventory each year. Many are like this sharp and clean 1979 Pontiac Bonneville. It has had just one owner since new and has just 24,968 actual miles. Additional equipment and accessories include power steering, power brakes, cruise control, power locks and 6-way power driver's seat. All books and a copy of the original window sticker will accompany purchase.

When BMW came out with a little two-seater roadster in 1995, it was known for its precise engineering. Handling was razer sharp. However, it was not until 2001 that the power plant got an upgrade to the 3.0L V6. This 2001 BMW Z3 Roadster is one of the upgrades just before production ended in 2002. Under powered until that time, they say the upgrade allowed the Z3 to go from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. All of the interior appointments are what you would expect from BMW. This one is being offered for sale at Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. They say it comes with All Season Traction Control, and dual power bucket heated seats. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is only $13,900.
