As we look back on the NASCAR competitions of the 1960s it was evident that Chrysler was having its lunch handed to it by Ford and Chevrolet. They needed to turn that around, and they decided to make their stand. Wild and crazy as it seems today, they came out with aerodynamic cars with huge wings on the back to break the 200 mph barrier on NASCAR high banked super speedways. They were over the top for new car buyers of the era, but today they are among the most sought after collector cars of all time.
Fresh among the inventory at Specialty Sales Classics in Pleasanton, California this week is a rare and highly impressive Tor-red 1970 Plymouth Superbird. This amazing muscle car has a factory Super Commando 440 ci V8 with a six pack engine under the hood, and transfers power through a special 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission. Read the story in the detailed history they have compiled. You'll learn that it comes with an original broadcast sheet and a full folder of documentation proving its authenticity. With sensational body lines and world-class performance, this highly original 1970 Plymouth Superbird is easily one of the premier examples available on the open market.
Today, on the MyDreamCar.online blog site we have published a short history of the 1970 Plymouth Superbird. Read about the Superbird's impact on the muscle car market and view a video walk-around of this Tor-red muscle car, and hear it run. With Memorial Day Weekend upon us, we are about to enter into the hottest part of the Car Show season. Just look at the June Car Show Calendar recently updated by Cars-On-Line.com. You'll find the 25th Annual Hot Rod Power Tour (photo left) starting the second week in June. The RM Auburn Spring Auction will be held at the Auburn Auction Park in Auburn, Indiana next weekend. Also this year, the AACA Grand National Meet will be held at the Auburn Auction Park that same weekend. What a great "two-fer." In mid-June, the Chicago SCCA June Sprints will be held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. That's always a great automotive event and sports car reunion. Also in the June Calendar you will find details about the Bloomington Gold Corvette Show and the famous Back to the 50's Car Show in St. Paul, Minnesota. Be sure to check Cars-On-Line.com's Car Show Calendar for events in your area.
Autoblog reported this week that HRE and GE Additive have come up with an amazing process for creating titanium wheels that weigh less than the tire. The HRE wheel you see here is currently on a custom Ford GT. Click here to read the story on Autoblog. The wheel shown here is the second generation HRE3D+. Constructed out of carbon fiber and titanium powder, the 3D printer software from GE Additive actually melts layers of titanium powder together to "print" the wheel in five sections. The finished wheel weighs only 18 pounds. HRE has put together a video on You Tube which shows how the wheels are fabricated through the 3D process and how the technology actually works. This is way cool.

What's hot in the market right now? With muscle car prices trending downward, what is gaining in value these days? Classic European sports cars from the 1950's through the 1970's. Especially the early classic Ferraris. This 1970 Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 built by Pininfarina is a great example. In 2012, you could find ads for these cars in Hemmings Motor News where private sellers were offering them for around $100,000. Today Hagerty Insurance will insure a concours example for $320,000. The one you see featured this week by Daniel Schmitt & Company out of St Louis is considered to be exceptional and has been well cared for. In recent years the owner invested $50,000 on the interior alone. Only about 742 GT 2+2's with the Columbo V-12 engine were produced between 1968 and 1971. These cars are the talk of the collector car market.
Famous racing names, Ron and Greg Mancini, were invoked by the owner of this 1964 Dodge 330 Post race car when he wrote his description. He says the Mancini team built this interesting race car and said they won two NMCA Championships with it. Mancini ran in Nostalgia Super Stock back then. He had come out of retirement to take that championship. This is a serious race car with all the right equipment. The Omaha, Nebraska seller says it has a recently built and never raced 512 ci engine assembled with 440 source 17 cc dished pistons, Ultralight stroker crankshaft, and Platinum series connecting rods. 10.5 to one compression. And it runs on pump gas. It currently runs 1964 Stage 3 intake manifold with Edelbrock AFB carbs on top. It can use Max Wedge velocity stacks or custom air filter assemblies. It has a 727 Dodge TF transmission with heavy duty clutches and bands, plus ATI 10-inch stall speed torque convertor. Mini-tubbed, it will accept 10" rear wheels. It has the Ramchargers look. (Mancini's uncle was one of the original Ramchargers, Dan Mancini.) Read the endless list of top performance equipment built into this car. You will agree that it is a lotta' race car for the money.
A spring tradition for collector car enthusiasts, RM Auctions’ 2019 Auburn Spring Auction returns to the historic Auburn, Indiana Auction Park with a new extended four-day sale on May 29-June 1. Last year's sale resulted in $6 million in total sales with an 84 percent sell-through rate. The 2019 Auburn Spring auction, now in its 18th year, will see about 400 quality collector cars and a huge selection of automobilia cross the auction stage. Here is a sneak preview of the top selections:
At the 1932 New York Auto Show, Packard unveiled its long-rumored junior companion to the traditional full-size lineup. Known as the 900 Series Light Eight, the car was nicknamed the Shovelnose for the distinct, un-Packard-like scoop-shaped radiator grille. This is a 1932 Packard 900 Coupe Roadster, an older restoration with a pleasing patina. It has its 110 hp, 320 cu. in. L-head inline eight engine. They say it runs and drives superbly. It will be Lot # 6041 this coming weekend at the RM Auburn Spring Auction on Saturday.
A 1988 1/2 Ferrari Testarossa will be one of the top exotic cars offered at this year's RM Auburn Spring Auction next Saturday. Not only does it have less than 15,700 mies on the odometer, it has had only one owner for the past 15 years. Of course, it comes with the incomparable flat V-12 4.9L making 380 hp, and a 5-speed manual transmission. They say it comes with its book, tools and spare. The desirable color combination is replete with Rosso Corsa paint and a black leather interior. Ferraris are the hot trend for the collector car market right now.
Red with gold emblems, this 1955 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible makes quite a statement. It will be Lot # 6085 on Saturday night week at the RM Auburn Spring Auction in Auburn, Indiana. The description has it as an oder restoration which still presents beautifully. It comes with power seat, power windows, power steering and power brakes, not bad for a mid-'50s luxury car. The two-tone interior features a clock and a radio. This one also comes with one of the technological advancements of the era, the famous GM Autronic eye which dimmed the headlights when it sensed uncoming traffic.
Custom car collectors will want to check this one out. A 1954 Chevy Bel Air Custom Convertible will be up for auction at the RM Auburn Spring sale next week. This one is a better-than driver quality older restoration with some very unique features. Note the modifications which include a a chopped top and windshield, removable Carson hardtop, shaved door handles, custom grille and tail lights, lowered suspension, and dual frenched antennas. It is equipped with dual spotlights, fender skirts, side pipes, and Cadillac wheel covers.

You won't believe the great prices in the DEAL of the DAY today. We haven't seen prices like these in years. The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be featured in the DEAL of the DAY section on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
Here is one of the best deals on a first generation Pontiac Firebird convertible that we have seen in years. This 1968 Pontiac Firebird Convertible was listed by a private seller from Johnston, Rhode Island. You can see from the photos that this is a better-than-average quality driver with a sparkling white top and interior. With a 350 small block Pontiac motor, this one has it all. Click this link to view a walk-around video and see if you don't think this is a rare find. Check the ad copy for all of the recent updates. He says he is a meticulous owner. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is only $26,900. We haven't seen a nice one like this at this price in years. Hurry!
Almost fell off my chair when I saw the price on this 1934 Ford 3-Window Coupe from South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The glass body is by Street Beasts, and the private seller says it only has 24k miles on the build. The 355 Chevy engine is said to have less than 1,000 miles on it, and it has a 350 Turbo automatic transmission, suicide doors, power disc brakes, air conditioning and heat, cruise control, power windows, power trunk, remote doors windows. And there is more. Read the description. This car seems to have been done right. The best way to know for sure is to have it inspected before you buy. But, hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $27,000.
Certainly a rare and desirable car to collect, this 1960 Pontiac Bonneville 2-Dr Hardtop is even more desriable because of its low miles. The private seller from Lake Havasu City, Arizona tells us it has a few miles on it (probably had spun the odometer already) but says she looks and runs great and is fun to drive. They really made a great car back then. It comes with a 389 big block Pontiac motor and has the automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes. The seller thinks the restoration work was done about six years ago, including engine, paint, chrome and interior. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy, but hurry. He is only asking $28,500 for this elegant Bonneville cruiser.
A collector out of Bedford, Virginia has come across a number of interesting GM products he is offering for sale this week. The one we are focusing on now is a 1963 Buick Riviera Custom that has a custom air suspension. We are classifying it as a lowrider, but what an elegant lowrider it is. With resto mod style two-tone paint, he says it comes with the bullet proof Buick engine, power steering, power brakes, power windows, factory air conditioning and is overall a nice custom, done right. The best part, though, is the price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week because the asking price is only $18,800.
By the mid 1970's the iconic Cadillac Eldorado Convertible was in its waning years. 1976 would be the last year it would be offered. So this 1975 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible remains as one of the largest 2-door luxury cars ever built.. Its collectibility is off the charts. This one has been listed for sale by a private seller in Broad Run, Virginia. He says it comes with the huge 500 ci V8 engine, automatic transmission, air conditioning, power windows, power steering and power brakes. He says it has a new Hartz cloth top, new paint and new carpet. He is the third owner on this now classic luxury car. It says 72k miles on the odometer, and he tells us it has been garage kept. It will be our DEAL of the DAY during the coming week. The asking price is $15,000.
When you look at the photos on this 1967 Dodge Coronet Convertible you get the idea that it is clean and very sharp looking. It will turn heads at the local shows, don't you know. Classic Car Liquidators from Sherman, Texas have it for sale this week. They represent it as more of a driver class car with some updated equpment. It comes with a 400 ci V8 engine, long tube headers, Mopar Performance valve covers, electronic ignition, Edelbrock aluminum intake and carburetor, and dual hood scoops. Factory AM radio, power steering, front disc brakes, center console and a power top are all part of the package. Notic it has the Mopar Rallye wheels. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later in the week as the price is only $17,999.
Cadillacs and Corvettes are the "Gold Standard" of the American collector car hobby. And one of the best years to collect classic Cadillacs is 1957. So this 1957 Cadillac Series 62 2-Door Hardtop surprised us when it was posted for just $17,000 this week. The color is not for everyone. The newer Root Beer metallic paint is a color that some people like and others do not. However, look at the photos. The leather interior, headliner, carpets and dash pad are said to be new. The private seller from Escondido, California even says the brakes, Hydro vacuum power brake booster are also new. The 365 ci V8 and automatic transmission have also been rebuilt. We think you'll agree that this original California Cadillac is a lotta' car for the money.
