Ford Motor Company's slogan for 1963 was "Total Performance." For a stodgy old automobile company, this was a revolutionary declaration. The Baby Boom generation was in its teens and they were about to experience the muscle car era. Ford Motor Company was reading the tea leaves. So that year, in 1963, they not only won the NASCAR championship, but they also redefined Indy Car racing with their rear wheel drive technology. Then they set their sights on drag racing as well.
Enter the 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweight, looking much like the street version R Code 427 Galaxie. But they actually had nothing in common. Just over 200 of these Galaxie 500 Lightweight cars were built at Ford’s Norfolk Assembly Plant from April to June 1963.
This week, Motorcar Classics out of Farmingdale, New York listed a real deal 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweight for sale. It is one of the rarest Ford muscle cars we've ever had on our website. The Lightweight was restored to authentic “as-raced” condition including Police Interceptor low-fade 11 x 3-inch brakes with drilled backing plates, a race-spec aluminum RC Industries bellhousing, heavy-duty suspension, and an aluminum-case toploader T-10 4-speed.
Lightweights all had the 427/425 horsepower R-Code engine, Borg Warner 4-speed aluminum transmission and dual Holley 4-barrel carburetors. But then it gets interesting. Ford shed 425 pounds off the Galaxie to produce the lightweights as purpose built race cars. They even came heater, radio and arm rest “delete.” Much of the weight reduction accomplished by Ford came from using fiberglass for the hood, front fenders, decklid and inner fender liners.
This car was found in Georgia and has been the subject of discussion on many forums. It was restored by a respected expert with fewer than 500 miles since the redo. Learn more about the Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweights in a featured article on our MyDreamCar.online blog site. Please contribute your stories about the R Code 427 Lightweigts in the Comments section below the article. We love to hear your comments.

Is the Tupelo Automobile Museum on your bucket list? It is one of the top Classic Car Museums in the world, but they just announced it will be closing forever in April 2019. They estimate that about 175 important collector cars such as this 1948 Tucker (shown left) will be offered for sale at an historic auction by Bonhams Auctioneers. The 120,000 sq. ft. museum houses over 160 cars and is situated in downtown Tupelo, Mississippi, home of Elvis Presley. Many of the Elvis cars famously given away to local residents are housed here. The Bonhams auction will be April 25-27, 2019 at the museum. All cars will be sold at No Reserve. But you can still visit the museum before it closes. Hours are Monday - Saturday 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. until further notice.

Have you ever wanted to own one of those car magazine centerfold cars? Well here's your opportunity. The private owner of this 1955 Chevy Custom Show Truck is offering it for sale. He says it will be the centerfold story in an upcoming edition of Classic Truck Magazine. It was also selected as one of Street Rodder Magazine's Top 100 in 2018. The seller from Lockport, New York describes it as "flawless", chopped 2", sectioned hood, one-off outside door handles, tons of custom louvers and metalwork. Digital Air Ride, tubular a arms, rack and pinion steering, 4 wheel wilwood power discbrakes, 18" schott wheels, all on a custom chassis. As you can imagine, "insane money" was spent to build this wild ride. You can now buy it for a fraction of the cost.
In 1963, when NHRA decided to increase the limit on engine size to 7 Liters, Chrysler came out with its 426 Hemispherical engine. The rest is history. This 1963 Plymouth Savoy was one of just eighteen Max Wedge 426 cars built that year. It came with the coveted Cross Ram intake. Legendary Motorcar Company is selling this one for a client. It comes with the Push Button Torqueflite transmission and a 3.91 Sure Grip Limited Slip rear end. They say it is fully documented. What a great reminder of the performance era of Chrysler production specifically to go racing in NHRA. It could be the centerpiece of your collection.
Southern Motors in Clarkston, Michigan posted an interesting video of this 1970 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner. They are selling a true RM code Road Runner they sourced from North Carolina. It has a beautiful factory B5 blue metallic finish with white vinyl top. What is so hot about this car, though, is the 1970 date coded 426 Hemi power plant. It also has the 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission, bucket seats and a console. If you have never owned a Hemi Mopar, this is your chance.

Univeral Muscle Cars in Linthicum, Maryland has been selling muscle cars to hot rodders in the Southeast for decades. They are well-known for bringing top muscle cars to market and they have a reputation of standing behind their cars. They recently found this 1972 Yenko Deuce Nova tribute through a restoration shop they deal with. It was built from a real deal Nova SS donor car. It has fresh PPG paint. They say this one was built to show. According to their description the body is super straight, solid and clean. The detail on this one will impress you. (See the photos in the ad.) And it has a "thumpin' engine.". It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because it is the best deal in our Muscle Car Section this week. The asking price is $28,900.
Here is an interesting 1956 Ford Thunderbird being offered for sale by a private seller from Eaton, Ohio. This is a T-Bird which has not been restored, and the seller says it needs a new gas tank before it can run, so this is in some ways much like a restoration project. It comes with a convertible top and a hardtop, with new fender skirts in the trunk which have never been put on the car. The seller says it has been garage kept and started every month before the gas tank developed a leak. It has the three-speed manual transmission, bucket seats and tilt steering. The seller also notes that it comes with premium wheels and tires. You need to have it inspected before you buy it. But it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday because the asking price is $24,500.
This is probably the most interesting DEAL of the DAY we will show you this year. A private seller in St. Petersburg, Florida has just reduced the price on his 1971 Mercury Cougar Convertible. This is the rare M Code Cougar factory built with the Mach 1 package like a Mustang. The seller says it is reported to be one of one according to the Marti Report. Remember, Ford did not even produced a Mach 1 convertible. Here is a Cougar convertible which was produced with the Mach 1 package. This is a real find for any collector. We recommend you have it inspected before you buy, but hurry. It is Competition yellow with an original top which the seller says works and fits perfect. It even has factory air conditioning. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is only $9,500.
A Florida collector is selling his 1963 Chevy Nova SS. He says it is turnkey ready for cruising or to attend your next local car show. The front end was dropped 2 inches with a Chevy 350 small block motor mated to a 4-speed transmission. He notes the "beautiful stance." The Exterior and Interior is a Beautiful Burgundy combination giving it a classic style with Vintage Chevy Rally Wheels. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy. But hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week because the asking price is only $18,900. You never see Super Sport Novas in this price range.
Streetside Classics in Phoenix, Arizona has a nice 1962 Chevy Corvair Monza Convertible for sale. They say it is finished in the factory correct red color and has a long list of itemized receipts which show plety of care and money invested in just the past few years. The paint has a nice shine, the bumpers still have a mirror-like finish and the trim is complete. They also indicate that the white top is newer and matches the white finish interior. It has a more powerful 164 ci aluminum Flat 6 cylinder motor borrowed fromt a later model Corvair. That's plenty of power to zip around in for this 2,700-lb car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with an affordable asking price of $15,995.
Fast Lane Classic Cars in St Charles, Missouri has an affordable Mercedes SL convertible for sale this week. If you 've been looking for a quality European sports car, Americans really seem to take to the 1981 Mercedes-Benz 380SL Roadster. First of all they came with the 3.8 Liter Fuel Injected V8 for smooth acceleration and lots of sporty power. This one has an automatic transmission with about 105,000 miles. They offer a clean Carfax with the car. The original Silver Blue finish is popular and it has a blue interior, a removable body colored hardtop, blue canvas top and factory air conditioning. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week because they are asking just $10,995.
So here is a bit of a project. But it is unusual because it is a potential show vehicle. This 1984 GMC Sierra Lowrider comes with Accuair E-level, CVT tank, and dual V444 compresors mounted to the frame. The private seller from San Bruno, California says it has a fresh interior with new dash pad, door cards, carpet and speaker kick pods. The power window kit is not yet installed but comes with the vehicle. It is shaved with alarm and relays. But the door poppers need to be installed. It has 22" Bonspeed rims. The seller says he is having trouble with CA smog regulations. This is one you should have inspected before you buy. But for a restoration specialist it could be a money maker. The asking price is $14,000.
