As the American pickup truck evolved from a workhorse farm truck into a family passenger vehicle, the styling changed dramatically. Chrysler felt pressed to keep up with Chevrolet and Ford in the light pickup truck market. When they came out with the 1957 Dodge D100 Sweptside Pickup with its aero-dynamic passenger type fins, they broke the mold on stodgy old pickup trucks. Today, these stunning Dodge sport trucks hold great value in the collector truck market.
Fast Lane Classic Cars out of St Charles, Missouri has listed one of the rare 1957 Dodge D100 Sweptside Pickup trucks for sale this week. We've only seen one other Sweptside pickup on our pages in all the years we've been selling collector trucks. They say that there were only about 180 of these trucks made. That is partially because Dodge never mass produced these trucks on an assembly line. They were all hand built in the Special Equipment Group section of the Dodge plant.
Our iconic Sweptside pickup from Fast Lane Classic Cars has a 315 ci Dodge Hemi V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor, 3-speed push button automatic transmission, 8 3/4 rear end, power steering, 15” steel wheels with correct hubcaps and wide whitewall tires. As you can see in the photos it has a red and white bench seat interior and a wood bed.
For more on the 1957 Dodge D100 Sweptside Pickup you will want to follow our blog page where we have a story on the "prettiest truck ever built." Follow this link to read more history and background on the D100 Sweptside and find out how it was built. We invite you to tell us your D100 Sweptside stories in the comments section below the article. We love to hear your stories.

We are in awe of this 1964 Shelby Cobra, a full competition 289 Cobra raced by Shelby American back in the day. It was just listed for sale by Legendary Motorcar Company, one of the world's premier classic car dealers. What makes this car so valuable is that it was actually raced by the Shelby American team. It is one of only 24 such cars to have been raced under the Shelby banner. This car was raced by Tom Payne. Under the ownership and sponsorship of Ford, Payne campaigned the car through the 1964-1965 seasons with many races as a Shelby American Team entrant. He finished in first place at Kent Fields and the Greenwood SCCA. They say he made the podium at every event he entered in 1964. In 1965 he took four first places in the 1965 Canadian Mont Tremblant Pepsi Cola Trophy races. In 1984, with the car in the possession of Rick Nagel, a noted Shelby collector, the car was restored to original and entered in the Texas Vintage Challenge with Carroll Shelby at the wheel, taking home 1st place after Shelby’s long hiatus from competition. In the summer of 1985 Steven Volk, founder of the Shelby American Collection Museum, purchased the car. Bill Murray, one of the highest regarded Cobra restorers was selected to restore the car to concours condition. Volk displayed the car for nearly 25 years at his museum surrounded by the most significant collection of Cobras and GT40s that has ever been assembled. Now in the collection at Legendary Motorcar Company, they have just placed the car up for sale. If you want to define the term "provenance," this is it.
For all of you readers who are looking for that killer deal, here it is. A new classic car dealer just put out their shingle in Sherman, Texas this year. PC Classic Cars is a division of PC Investments, LLC in Texas. They have been buying and selling collector cars for many years. Their specialty is finding popular collector cars at great prices. Evidence this 1972 Buick Skylark Gran Sport which they just posted today. They tell us it comes with the original build sheet, original numbers matching 350 engine, a Turbo 350 automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, tilt steering and a factory tach. It should have been our DEAL of the DAY today because they are only asking $19,900. Hurry! And watch for their listings on the New Listings page this week.
Another classic car dealer in our COL Dealer Network has jumped onto the video bandwagon. Ross Customs out of Ortonville, Michigan has been featuring walk-around videos in their online ads. Here is a 1966 Chevelle Convertible which is actually an SS tribute. They say it has recently undergone a frame off restoration, painted in "show quality" Victory Red base coat, clear coat, sanded and wheeled smooth. Note the new convertible power top. It also includes factory black bucket seat console interior, factory original dash, dash pad in very good condition, factory gauge package, deluxe 2-spoke wood wheel and more. While the Pontiac Firebird Formula is often thought of as a "lower priced" Trans Am, the Firebird Formula had quite a following back in the day. RK Motors Charlotte has come up with a 1975 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350 with unbelievably low miles. Not only do they tell us this hot Firebird has only 21,218 documented miles, they also indicate it is priced affordably at just $26,900. Now that's a lotta' car for the money. Here is a Daytona yellow 1969 Camaro which has been authentically restored to COPO Camaro specs. What is amazing about this tribute is that it has a real ZL1 427/430 hp aluminum block motor with transistorized ignition and factory-style chambered exhaust. This is a banner week for low price bargains. The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted in the DEAL of the DAY feature of the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
In the past two years one of the few muscle cars that is going up in value is the 1967-69 Pontiac Firebird Convertible. That's partly becaue they did not go up when Camaro values escalated out of sight earlier last decade. But they are better appreciated in today's market. This 1969 Pontiac Firebird Convertible is from Shelton Classics & Performance out of Mooresville, North Carolina. It has the 350 small block motor with a TH400 automatic transmission. Shelton also included a walk-around video in their ad. Click here to view the video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday this week with an asking price of $26,995.
Here is a rare one. A 1955 Dodge 1/2-Ton Pickup looks good in the photos. The private seller from New Boston, Michigan seems to describe it as a good running, good driving little classic pickup. He's not trying to oversell it. He says the paint is patina'd and there is a spot of rust at the bottom of the front fenders. He describes the wood bed, interior and glass as "nice." It comes with a Flathead 6 cylinder engine and a three-on-a-tree manual transmission. We'd love to inspect this one for you. It is the type of listing you want to know more about. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday with the price set at $9,900.
This may be the "sleeper" deal this week. A 1932 Ford Vicky was listed by a private seller from Manchester, Missouri. It really looks sweet in the photos. The color is said to be Deep Amethyst pearl. The seller does not describe the condition of the paint. It looks good in the photos, so you might want to have it inspected before you buy to make sure. It has a Hastings body, TCI chassis and Heidt's front end. Powered by a built 355 small block Chevy engine with Comp cam, it has a 350 Turbo automatic transmission, Southern air and heat, Suart Warner wing gauges and a Ford 9-inch rear end with 3.50 gears. Note the Halibrand wheels. It looks so sweet it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The price: $28,000
Everybody loves an old Volkswagen, especially the Beetle convertibles. Today Classic Car Liquidators in Sherman, Texas have listed a 1973 VW Beetle Convertible that looks better than average in the photos. Classic Car Liquidators specializes in low cost collector cars. You should have it inspected before you buy to make sure. They make no recommendations as to the condition. But this one shows well in the dozens of photos in the online ad. It has the big 1600 cc motor and a 4-speed manual transmission ... would be fun to drive. It comes with deluxe wheel covers. The reason it will be our DEAL of the DAY early next week is the price. They are asking just $8,999.
You know what we always say about first generation Ford Thunderbirds ... "If you find one for under $30,000 ... buy it." The only caveat on that is that it has to be in good condition. So here is a 1957 Ford Thunderbird being offered for sale at Streetside Classics in Atlanta, Georgia this week. It really looks good in the photos. Collectors should note that it comes with non-original equipment such as a Jasper 302 V8 crate motor and a Ford C6 automatic transmission. But they say the interior has been nicely restored. You should really check out the photos. This would make a nice driver quality, fun car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with an asking price in the sweet spot at $27,995.
A fresh find from Fairfield, California was just listed this week for Mopar collectors. A 1968 Plymouth GTX with an NOM big block 440 Commando motor was listed for sale by a private seller. Listen to the lopey cam here in a brief video. The seller notes the straight body and paint, but indicates that it was repainted a non-original color. He says the car runs well with an Edelbrock intake and carb and mild cam. It has disc brakes and an 8 3/4-inch rear end. One thing he notes is that all the body numbers match the fender tag. He also says you won't find rust. This one will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The price is at a discount to the average price on a GTX. He's asking $24,000.
A few decades back the hottest sports car on the market for young upwardly mobile Americans (YUPPIES) was the Mercedes-Benz SL convertible. More recently they have not faired so well in the collector car market. But here is a 1981 Mercedes 380 SL Roadster that you cannot ignore. The private seller from Battle Creek, Michigan says it has a new leather interior and new carpet. In addition, he says the engine was completely rebuilt by Mercedes-Benz about 11,000 miles ago (car has 135,250 miles.) It comes with all documents. He describes the Navy blue top as being "like new." It comes with the hardtop and hardtop storage carrier. It is loaded with all available options. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week if it lasts that long. The price is $10,000.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
