History will be made this year at the Fall Auburn Auction coming up on Labor Day Weekend. Two very rare Corvette muscle cars will be dominating the auction action at the RM Auction Park in Auburn, Indiana, during the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival. On Saturday a 1969 Corvette L88 Convertible and a 1968 Corvette L88 Convertible will be offered at auction from the Jim Mangione Collection. These two sales will make national news. Bidding is expected to reach $500,000 on each of these auspicious muscle cars.
The Tuxedo black 1969 Corvette L88 Convertible (shown above) is well-known in the Corvette community. It is one of only 116 ever ordered in '69. The purpose built Corvette racing engine, an L88 430 hp 427 ci V8 is mated to an M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed manual transmission. This ultra high compession big block motor with aluminum heads may have been intended for race teams only, but a knowledgable buyer who knew which boxes to check could order one for street use. But not for long. GM stopped production on the 430 hp L88 after 1969. (Many experts think the L88 should have been rated at closer to 600 hp.) Mangione's '69 L88 Corvette presents well, and it retains special-order charms such as a radio-delete blank plate, a chrome knob for its M22 four-speed manual gearbox, and the L88-specific hood.
The 1968 Corvette L88 Convertible (shown right) is a well documented example which is even more rare than the 1969 mentioned above. That is because only 80 L88 Corvettes were produced that year. It was optioned with both hard and soft tops, Rally wheels, and came radio and heater delete. It has always been owned by Corvette enthusiasts who appreciated its collector value. The car was restored by David Walters and remains one of the finest in existence.
The Fall Auburn Auction by RM provides two unique opportunities to own an L88 Corvette. This is big. We can't wait to witness history in the making.

Here is a new opportunity for car lovers. Cars-On-Line readers who use our Car Show Calendar may be aware of the interesting little show called the Motorsports Gathering (used to be refered to as The Quail Run) at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California. It is one of the more exclusive attractions this week during Monterey Car Week, the week-long series of collector car events that lead up to the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance. This exclusive event has been made available to the public now with a special program just announced by the Quail Lodge & Golf Club called the Quail Moto Rally Experience. As part of this promotion, you can book a stay at the Quail Lodge any time of the year and then rent a collector car to take on the famous pre-planned road rally through the scenic and winding country roads along the Monterey Bay area. You'll be able to rent vehicles as diverse as a 1937 Mercedes-Benz Limousine to a 1968 Camaro SS Convertible or 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 replica for the four-hour tour. Tours include foodie tours, or visits to local vinyards. One of the tours includes a picnic tour of Pinnacle National Park. Click here to watch a promo video from The Quail Lodge & Golf Club.
We just got back from Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada this past weekend. This show just keeps getting bigger every year. The Sunday parade down the strip in Reno started at about 10 AM on Sunday morning and did not end until noon. Now that's a lotta' cars. We've never seen anything llike it. If you missed our live coverage, you can review the photos and videos of this past weekend at this link. Seeing all the 1950's and 1960's cars on the main drag was like stepping back in time to an era when the car culture was king. It's heart warming for us Baby Boomers. They call it the World's Biggest Car Show and they have a right to claim that name.
We congratulated the Hot August Nights Cup Award winner this weekend in our blog report on the awards ceremony. (Follow this link to see who won.) But we also held our own contest for Best of Show with our COL readers. They picked a 1933 Ford Roadster built by Customs & Hot Rods of Andice, Texas. Tracy and Harold Chapman's beautiful '33 Roadster was a class entry in the Hot August Nights Cup competition this past weekend. They told us there were over 100 custom fabricated or modified parts on this incredible street rod build. It received the most votes on our Facebook page as Best of Show for our Hot August Nights review. Our readers obviously have more traditional tastes.

Here is a real deal 1970 Plymouth Cuda V Code with a shaker hood. The private seller from Dumas, Pennsylvania says it is all numbers matching. Take a breath. That's amazing ... a shaker Cuda V Code 440 6 Pack with all numbers matching. Add to that ... it comes with a Super Track Pack option 4.11 rear end. He says the Tor-red Cuda is an original California car with a black vinyl top, and has been inspected by Mopar historian Galen Govier. And he says it was restored in 2000. It has a new ECS turn down exhaust, and new Polyglass e60-15 tires. A full set of photos of the restoration in progress is available to view. What a find for a top Mopar collector. You'll be interested to know that the price is below what the price guides say is the average value.
This year's Fall Auburn Auction on Labor Day Weekend is shaping up to be the one big national auction you just can't afford to miss. The Fall Auburn Auction by RM Sotheby's is part of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival held in Auburn, Indiana, August 29-September 1, 2019. RM Auctions is anticipating over 700 vehicles will cross the auction block for the giant sale. The auction sale at the RM Auction Park during the A-C-D Festival has been going on for 46 years. The lineup of featured cars is amazing. Here are some we discovered in their inventory this week:
A brilliant 1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Dual-Windshield Phaeton will be offered for sale at this year's Fall Auburn Auction. It will be one of the star cars you will see for sale on Saturday. What is significant is that it will be offered at No Reserve. Yes, we said at No Reserve. The history on this car is well known. It was purchased new by a famous boat racer, Lou Fageol. During its history it was owned by both college students and millionaires. They say it was restored in the 1980's.
Ford has made the purchase of their coveted exotic super car, the Ford GT, so exclusive that buyers far outnumber the few GT's available. So to have an opportunity to buy a 2017 Ford GT such as this one at the Fall Auburn Auction should excite today's exotic car enthusiasts. They say this is the only one produced in Riviera Blue. It has a 647-horsepower, 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
It is probably the most important car Buick ever built. The 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible was designed to make a statement that Buick was the dominant luxury car company of its day. This beautiful example is one of a huge number of 1950's cars available in the Fall Auburn Auction sale. A frame off restoration was performed about 10 years ago. Prior to that it was an AACA senior First Place Award winner. It is one of 1,690 produced for Buick's Anniversary Year.
Is the Dodge Charger or the Plymouth Cuda the most popular muscle car for Mopar enthusiasts? That question may be arguable. But there is no doubt that this 1969 Dodge Charger 500 SE is in high demand among Mopar collectors. It will be among the top muscle cars for sale during this year's Fall Auburn Auction at the end of August. This one is offered from the RPM Collection. A new restoration, it has the 440 Magnum Dodge big block motor. One of only two in this color.

You'll enjoy watching this video of a 1960 Chevy El Camino. After all, who doesn't love an early El Camino? It is being offered for sale by Unique Specialty & Classics, a collector car dealer in Minnesota. They really turn a lot of classic cars. One of the reasons is that they do these videos for car shoppers. They say the white paint has a great luster. Under the hood is an NOM 350 small block mated to a Turbo 350 automatic transmission and comes with power antenna, vinyl snap-on tonneau cover and white "spray-in" bedliner. Check out the interior (when you click the video window above.)

A private seller from Millbury, Massachusetts is now selling his 1967 Camaro project. He started the restoration. The rear skins are replaced and it has a new hood, trunk lid and fenders. From the photos you might discern that the panel fitment looks good. You should inspect it to be sure. It has the 350 small block motor with an automatic transmission. He says many new and used parts are included in the sale.

What happens to top national level show cars that compete at the Detroit Autorama and Grand National Roadster Show? Well, they might just appear here in the Cars-On-Line.com newsletter for sale after a few years. This 1936 Ford Custom Ute won its class at Detroit Autorama in 2008, was selected as Motor Trend's Top Pick, was featured in Truckin Magazine in 2009 and was Street Scene's Builders Choice that year. Originally it was listed in our Street Rod Section for $180,000. But just this week the private seller reduced his price to $160,000. If you have always wanted to own a top national level show car, here's your chance.

This week's DEAL of the DAY preview has some of the finest collector cars we've ever offered at such low prices. Just look at the popular collector cars in this week's DEALs. This is where we give newsletter readers first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted in the DEAL of the DAY feature on the Cars On Line home page during the coming week. Often these cars sell right here in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first, though.
Pro Street cars are among the most popular cars for sale on Cars-On-Line.com. Whenever we check our analytics we find the Pro Street Section right up there among the top sections of our site. That's why it is a surprise to find this 1971 Camaro Pro Street for sale for only $24,500 today. We knew we had to show it to you here in the DEAL of the DAY. The private seller from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania says it has a 383 stroker motor putting out 500+ hp. This is a lotta' car for that kind of money. Better hurry and grab the phone before it gets away. It will be our DEAL of the DAY for Saturday.
What a historic find! Classic Lady Motorcars is presenting an all original 1954 Packard Clipper 4-Door Special for sale this week. She says this one is very orignial. It has won the Historical Preservation Award, and presents well. It is a rare survivor. If you like them original, this is the one you should look at. The bench seat cloth and vinyl interior is in immaculate condition and still looks new. This was the last year for the Flathead V8, a 327 ci engine. You can see from the photos that much of the design was following the more modern look of the emerging 1950's. As significant as it was for its day, this classic Packard is being offered at a bargain price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday with an asking price of $14,500.
This week, Unique Specialty & Classics in Mankato, Minnesota found a Raven black 1955 Ford Thunderbird Convertible which they say it essentially a moving time machine. It is pretty much the way it came from the factory with power steering, a 292 V8 Y-block motor and 3-speed on the column manual transmission. They say the previous owner had the engine rebuilt and gone through in 2000. See the photos of the black and white tutone interior. You'll notice the bright work. It comes with a hardtop only. They say it is straight and solid. They note that the door cards, seats, headliner, dash and carpeting all appear to be original. They say it runs and drives "great." It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday as their list price is $26,900.
A private party seller from Kensington in the Prince Edward Islands of Canada has this Springtime yellow 1966 Mustang Convertible for sale this week. He says it came from Montreal, Quebec and has had only two owners in 53 years. Interestingly he says the odometer shows only 35,000 kilimeters on it from new (about 22k miles.) He notes the all original black interior. He says the engine was rebuilt and it has had one repaint, and that it drives and starts well. It has a power top which he says has dependable hydraulics. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price is below its appraisal value. The price is only $26,900.
Here is a real find for Corvette collectors. PC Classic Cars out of Sherman, Texas just posted this nice looking 1969 Corvette Coupe with a 350/350 hp motor, the L46. They say it is all original and numbers matching. The original paint could be Hugger orange (only orange color they used in '69.) It comes with a 4-speed, power steering, 4-wheel power disc brakes, tilt telescopic steering, 15" Rally wheels and T-tops. They say it even has its original Protect-O-Plate. Most important, they say it runs and drives "great." It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price will surprise you. It is only $27,500.
What could be more American than a Ford T-Bucket with a Patriotic theme? KC Classic Auto in Lenexa, Kansas has it for sale this week. They say it will get you noticed where ever you go. Powered by a small block chevy V8 mated to an automatic transmission, it was originally built to be a drag car. They say it is fast and loud. The back tires are so big they are hard to brake loose. KC Classic Cars has done a walk-around video so you can hear it and get a sense of the car. Click here to view video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is $19,900.
This is the kind of driver quality truck that you can cruise down the road with with no trouble. That's what the private seller from Tyrone, Georgia tells us about his 1954 Chevrolet 3100 5-Window Pickup truck. From the photos you can tell it is solid and clean. The nice orange paint really stands out. He says the tires are like new, and that it comes with all new factory instruments, new steering column, new shifter and linkage, all new glass, and new electric wiper motor. He says the brakes and clutch work great. The truck has been converted to a 12-volt sytem, and he says it does not smoke, leak oil or run hot. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. He is asking $18,500.
