While Ferrari was feeling the bite of the Cobra in FIA competition internationally, on the home front Shelby American went drag racing. The result was the Shelby Cobra Dragonsnake program, and another episode in American car collecting was born. Only four of these Dragonsnake Cobras were ever sold to the public. Today one of them is for sale in the Cars-On-Line.com Shelby Section online.
For Shelby Cobras can evidence the provenance and racing history that this 1965 Shelby Cobra Dragonsnake comes with. Legendary Motorcar Company, a well known muscle car dealer, is now offering it for sale. It is one of their impressive array of fresh listings this week. (See more from Legendary Motorcar Company in the New Listings below.) A Pittsburgh car enthusiast special ordered this car originally from Ed Hugus of Continental Cars in 1965. Shelby American had built the Cobra, CSX 2472, as part of their own racing program and it was never used. So Hugus bought the car with special equipment which Shelby called their Dragonsnake Stage II package, with upgrades. They incuded: 3.77 rear end, Koni Shocks instead of drag type, Stewart Warner tachometer, chrome roll bar, heater, radio, FIA style wheels, shoulder harnesses and stock car tires rather than drag specific tires. The client wanted a monster drag engine in a street driven Cobra.
The next owner in the 1965 Shelby Cobra Dragonsnake's history went racing with it but rather than drag racing, the brother and sister team took it to autocross and hill climb events. The car saw its share of wins, taking home a reported 1,200 trophies.
The car still has a fire breathing 300-horsepower 289 ci race prepped Ford V8 engine. After an unbroken chain of four known owners, the Shelby Cobra 289 Dragonsnake still retains all of its original body panels and frame. They say the body has never seen any damage. It underwent an extensive "no-expense spared" restoration in 2006. It is truly a remarkable collector car to find. It even comes with a current SVRA logbook which documents all the car's racing history back to 1968.
Follow this link to our MyDreamCar.online blog for a much more detailed history of this well documented Shelby Cobra Dragonsnake. There you'll see more about the way Continental Cars in Pittsburgh ordered and dealer assembled the Stage II Dragonsnake package.

Former Sgt. Lew Barnes, USMC, after serving as a Vietnam War veteran, wanted to honor his fellow Marine Corps buddies by making his 1000 HP Hennessey Z06 Corvette into a rolling memorial to their valor. Semper fi. The intricate graphics on the car depict the heroes of the HMM-362 "Ugly Angels" and thirty-three fellow Marines from his squadron who gave their lives. His unit in Vietnam manned a Sikorsky UH-34D Helicopter nicknamed the "Ugly Angels." Their job was to pull out wounded Marines from battle zones. Oo-Rah! Sgt. Barnes was the crew chief. During those two+ years he was in Vietnam 8,000 Marines gave their lives for their country. From 1965 to 1975, nearly 500,000 Marines served in Southeast Asia. Of these, nearly 13,000 were killed and 52,000 wounded; nearly a third of all American causalities sustained during the war. Sgt. Barnes wants them to be remembered, and his Corvette is the way he has chosen to do that. The story is told in a You Tube series presented by Hennessey Performance. Click this link to view the first episode of "Heroes & Horsepower", and see this incredible tribute Corvette up close. The series is sponsored by Shell and Pennzoil. Thanks to John Hennessey for bringing this to our attention.
Last weekend at the Mecum Auction in Indianapolis it became apparent that a future collector car had been born. The new 2018 Dodge SRT Demon will be produced in limited numbers this year and the few that are available are already selling for sixty percent over dealer MSRP at collector car auctions. At Indy there were five SRT Demons for sale last weekend. One sold for $143,000. Previously at a Mecum Auction in Houston one sold for $170,000. The 3,000 SRT Demons which Dodge says they will build this year are being sold for $89,062 MSRP. But there are more buyers than Demons in the market right now. With it being so hard to get delivery on an order, buyers are having to buy at these public resale auctions where the prices are way over MSRP. Click this link to follow our feature story on the 840-horsepower 6.2L Hemi 2018 Dodge SRT Demons on the MyDreamCar.online blog site. (You may also want to check out all five 2018 Dodge SRT Demons for sale in our Dodge Section online.)

Fitting our Memorial Day Weekend theme perfectly is a 1971 Dodge Challenger Pace Car Convertible which was actually at the Indianapolis 500 festivities in 1971. A private seller from North Canton, Ohio listed his Indy Pace Car just in time for Memorial Day. He says "this car was used for dignitaries, vendor promotions and parades" at the 1971 Indianapolis 500 Memorial Weekend race. According to the ad copy it has had two owners and was restored in 2008. It comes with a 318 ci V8 , 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, factory air conditioning and a power top. The seller says all gauges and operating systems work. Bet you've never seen one of these before. Here is a 1931 Ford Model A 400 Sedan Convertible just listed for sale in our Classic Ford Section by Streetside Classics in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the Holy Grail for Model A collectors. Finished in Chicle and Copra Drab, this A 400 has been featured in many books and magazine articles. It has achieved a long list of awards as well. Only a handful of these A 400 cars were produced late in the production year. It is very unique because it has a rare Russian-made GAZ Model B engine, of which only 65 were ever built. It seems everything about this very unique Model A 400 is a collector's dream come true. It may just be the most noteworthy vintage Model A in existence.
Hendrick Performance is selling Jeff Gordon's 2012 Chevy Impala NASCAR race car. This one is a Hendrick Motorsports Chassis #24-725 which Jeff Gordon drove to victory at Pocono Raceway that year. They say the car was raced twice by Gordon. The tubular steel chassis car is powered by a certified Hendrick Motorsports 850+ hp EFI R07 358 ci V8 racing engine coupled to a race spec 4-speed transmission. Putting the power to the pavement is a Hendrick Engineering designed 9" rear housing assembly with locking differential. Restored with the collector in mind, this Hendrick Motorsports race car comes complete with Certificates of Authenticity, extensive documentation, a collection of race day photographs, as well as exclusive membership to the Hendrick Motorsports Certified Racecar Registry. Hendrick Performance says this is one of only a few Jeff Gordon race cars left to sell. It is an incredible find for a race car collector.
The Raleigh Classic Spring Auction is coming up on June 22-23, 2018. It is one of those events which all of the good ole boys from the Southeast know about. For some years now, Chris Lieth has sponsored this unique classic car auction drawing some really nice low-mile collector cars. It is the one all the classic car dealers just can't miss. If you can't be there in person you can register now to place your phone bids. Here are some of the featured cars we look forward to seeing in June:
This is one of just 1,265 Mercury dealer editions built to commemorate the 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser Indy Pace Car Convertible which lead the Indianapolis 500 race that year. This particular Pace Car was part of the “Mr. Mercury” Collection. It has had a complete frame up restoration and has just 61,308, believed to be actual, miles. This Cruiser is equipped with the 368 ci engine and Merc-O-Matic automatic push button transmission. It is fully loaded with options including power windows, power convertible top, power steering, power brakes, tachometer, clock, tinted glass, dual exhaust and much more. It will be one of the star cars at this year's Raleigh Classic Auction by Auctions America in Raleigh, North Carolina.
This 1933 Ford Boydster III has just 568 miles and is equipped with LS6 Corvette engine with headers and dual exhaust. From top to bottom, this custom is the epitome of clean design and remains in fantastic condition and will give you a chance to own a little piece of the Boyd Coddington magic for yourself. The Boyd look was so different from anything else in its era winning six America’s Most Beautiful Roadster trophies, the West Coast hot rodding hobby's most important award. These seminal rides defined the clean, crisp, ultra-modern “Boyd Look." The Boydster III was built by Deuce Customs as a tribute to Boyd Coddington's legendary Boydster I show car. It will be offered at the Raleigh Auction, June 22-23.
A 1971 Jaguar E-Type Roadster will be lot # J-219 at the Raleigh Classic in June. It has won trophies at car shows throughout the northeast for many years before retiring to fair weather driver status. With just two owners over the past 32 years, it comes with a folder of service and parts receipts dating back to 1986. Photos of this XKE have been featured in several national calendars (copies included with car). 1971 was the last year for the acclaimed Jaguar 4.2L six cylinder engine in the E-type. This handsome example includes the rare and desirable removable hardtop (click through to see photos.)
A great looking 1936 Ford Woody Wagon comes in Washington Blue paint and a look and stance that shows why these cars are so revered by collectors. This one features side curtains, mechanical brakes, wide white spider wheel covers and 3rd row seating. They say it runs and drives very well. The 1936 Ford Woody Wagons are considered by many to be the best looking station wagons made. Henry Ford bought a forest near Iron Mountain, Michigan for lumber used on their vehicles. In 1936 Ford opened its station wagon assembly line at its Iron Mountain mill. Classic Ford Woody Wagons are actually very inexpensive when you consider their rarity. We believe they are a great investment for any collector.

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be featured in the DEAL of the DAY section on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
Buyers should check out the 1971 Dodge Charger just posted by Coyote Classics in Greene, Iowa. They describe it as a nice running date code correct 440 4-barrel V8 backed up by a 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission. Here is a walk-around video of the Charger. They describe the paint as being a "twenty-footer" and say it is a driver quality car, not a show car. I think you will agree it presents well in the photos, and this '71 body style is one of Chrysler's best. It comes equipped with power steering, black vinyl top, sun roof, dual exhaust, and is riding on a new set of legend rims with new RWL tires. Buyers should be aware that Coyote Classics lists car like this frequently and they sell fast. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday (if it lasts that long.) The asking price is $17,995.
Nothing says European two-seater sports car better than this 1967 Sunbeam Alpine. It comes with two tops, convertible soft top and an auxiliary hardtop (see it in the photos.) Although Beverly Hills Car Club does not say for sure in the ad which engine is in this driver quality Sunbeam Alpine, we expect that it would be an original style overhead valve four cylinder. It does say it has the dual Zenith carburetors which came with the Sunbeam Rapier four cylinder engine. They tell us it is an "excellent weekend driver." That's good enough for a DEAL of the DAY rating because the asking price is just $16,500.
We've all seen the pro street versions of the legendary Henry J sedans. In fact, the Henry J never looked so good as when they are heavily customized and pro-streeted. Here is a 1951 Kaiser Henry J Corsair custom with that a somewhat custom look and the original facia. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday because it is a lotta' car for the money. Click here to view a detailed video. We think you'll see what we mean. The interior is pretty much driver quality, but the engine compartment is very clean and the engine runs sweet. You'll need to move fast on this one though. Streetside Classics in Charlotte, North Carolina has this one for sale. Their asking price is $17,995.
Newsletter readers have heard us talk about Classic Car Liquidators many times in the DEAL of the DAY section of the newsletter. They specialize in heavily discounted classic and muscle cars. Today they are hitting the hot trend in off-roading vehciles with a classic 1969 Ford Bronco for sale. It is really set up right with Rancho shocks, dual gas tanks and Mickey Thompson wheels. Although it is a nice looking vehicle from 10 feet away, close inspection shows interior problems and the undercarriage is solid looking but not clean and detailed. It does not great potential. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy because you need to know what you are getting involved with. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with an asking price of $19,999.
Here is a 1946 Ford Tudor Old School Custom which is just too cool to be offered so cheap. We just had to make it a DEAL of the DAY this week. Not only does it have modern technology in an old school look, but it just looks so nice in the photos. I think you will agree. The bright Red paint with dummy dual spotlights, and lake pipes w/ caps and fender skirts proclaim its old school heritage but get behind the wheel and you are greeted with a wood tilt wheel, chrome digital gauges, air conditioning, power steering and power disc brakes up front. The private seller from Brooksville, Florida is offering all this for $26,900.
How many classic 1960's station wagons do you think could exist in this kind of condition? A 1962 Plymouth Belevedere Station Wagon was listed this week by a private seller from San Diego, California. He says it is "original unaltered" with "no rust, patch panels or body filler." See the new headliner, door panels, seat covers and carpet when you come to inspect it. They look original. The seller says it has an original AM radio which works. New items include a new radiator, alternator, hoses, brakes and tires. The seller says it currenlty shows 68k miles. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price is $15,000.
DEAL of the DAY Alert! Just Posted! Here is a DEAL of the DAY to end all DEALs of the DAY. A 1941 Dodge Power Wagon WC9 was just posted for sale by a private seller from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. What a find! That popular trend in the collector hobby right now is to restore these World War II era Power Wagons as resto mods. Here is the perfect vehcile for that. The seller says it is all original, and that he is the second owner. He tells us it is in "good condition." This vehicle is a 4X4 with standard transmission and the seller says it drives well. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with an asking price of $15,500.
