In one sense, the last of the great American muscle cars was the Pontiac Trans Am Super Duty 455. In 1973 when the Arab oil embargo made gas guzzlers extinct and insurance companies threatened to put fast cars out of business, Pontiac's Trans Am with the SD-455 was just beginning its reign as the top American muscle car.
That is why today a 1973 Pontiac Trans Am Super Duty 455 like the one shown above from Carlyle Motors in Houston, Texas, is a rare Bird. This one has it all. The pedigree, the provenance and the show quality condition are extraordinary. Follow the ad link to see dozens of high resolution photos of this high quality restoration. In the photos are close up shots of the numbers and tags which prove its "numbers matching" claim. What's more, this one is a 4-speed making it one of only 72 such manual shifted SD-455's produced.
In a sure sign that this is the pre-spring market, Cars-On-Line.com has seen three more of these hot big block Trans Ams listed recently. Be sure to check out the 1974 Pontiac Trans Am Super Duty 455 just posted by Hip Rides out of Nashville, Tennessee. This one is said to be a real "X" Code SD Trans Am with factory air conditioning and original Deluxe interior. At just $56,900, the price is a little lower than the show quality 4-speed car above, mainly because it is an automatic with the 400 Turbo transmission. It came with power steering, power brakes and power windows. It even has the factory AM/FM with an 8-Track. Hip Rides also has a Buccaneer red 1974 Pontiac Trans Am Super Duty 455, another Turbo 400 automatic muscle car. Even though there were more SD-455's with automatic transmissions than with 4-speeds, these are two of just 731 ever produced.
On Wednesday, Fast Lane Classic Cars out of St Charles, Missouri also posted a Buccaneer red 1974 Pontiac Trans Am Super Duty 455 which is said to have only 85k original miles. It, too, comes with the Turbo 400 automatic transmission, factory air conditioning, power windows, tilt steering, power door locks, Rally gauges and power disc brakes. You'll see they have the window sticker shown in the photos. They say it is numbers matching with correct GH stamped heads, correct LS2 casted intake, correct Y8 stamped block, and L203 date code.

The FOX Business Network is airing another episode in their series called Strange Inheritance this coming Monday, February 26, at 9 PM ET. It seems an Idaho farmer left his children a "Bumper Crop" of old cars. When he retired, Cal Phillips spent his spare time restoring old cars from pieces he'd reclaimed from the scrapyard. He got pretty good at restoring his memories ... to the point where he had 50 cars and trucks all wedged inside his barn. When he passed in 2013, his children were left to discover the treasure trove of vintage vehicles covering eight decades. Host Jamie Colby covers the story of how the Phillips siblings dealt with their unusual inheritance. For a preview of the interesting story about the Phillips familyl and their "Bumper Crop" of cars follow this link. Then find out what the family did with the cars when you tune in to this week's episode of Strange Inheritance.

J.D. Power released the results of their highly anticipated Vehicle Dependability Study last week. The study measures the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles. They say the results show an encouraging trend for fans of mass market brands like Buick, Kia, and Chevrolet, all of which were among this year’s highest-ranked brands. “Vehicle dependability is, without question, at its best level ever,” said Dave Sargent, Vice President, Global Automotive at J.D. Power. Lexus took the top-ranked spot, followed by Porsche, Buick, Infiniti, Kia, and Chevrolet respectively. Click here for a full list of J.D. Power’s VDS rankings.

The controversy between Chevrolet and Kaiser as to who produced the first 2-seater American sports car is really a moot point. The actual first was the Nash-Healey Roadster. The Nash-Healey was produced from 1951 through 1954 through a special collaboration between George Mason of Nash-Kelvinator and Donald Healey. This 1952 Nash-Healey Roadster is currently offered for sale by Daniel Schmitt & Company out of St Louis. There were only 150 of these built that year. (Both Chevrolet and Kaiser would conclude that the Nash-Healey was not a true American sports car since the body was built in Italy.) The car was designed and built by Pinnin Farina. They used a Nash Ambassador big six cylinder engine with Lemans style twin carbs. It was mated to a three-speed overdrive transmission. From a collection of classic muscle cars in Switzerland comes a very rare and desirable 1968 Dodge Super Stock Hemi Dart, which the seller says is a real LO23 Hurst car. He says it is in the Galen Govier Chrysler Registry, No. 26 out of 53. He says it is the only Hemi Dart Super Stock car in Europe and is restored with Road Approval to drive it on European roads. The seller indicates that the engine was newly overhauled and all mechanical parts such as clutch, brakes, axles, etc., were rebuilt or replaced. Mopar fans will tell you that there were only 80 such cars ever produced by Hurst Campbell back in the day. They were all purpose built for racing.

Can you believe you can still buy a great looking convertible like this 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible for a reasonable price? With muscle car prices keeping the average collector from having fun with cars, you can still get great some great values. And this one is pretty hard to find. Cutlass convertibles are a good investment. There are not a lot of them out there. Streetside Classics produced a nice walk-around video on this one. This Saffron yellow example was a hot commodity back in the day. This one has the split bench up front with a wide fold-down armrest for individual cruising comfort. What a ride! This weekend, it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday with an asking price of $26,995.

There is no question that first generation Ford Mustang convertibles are a hot commodity for car collectors to own. But there are so many of them around that the values have not escalated. Recently the top early Mustang show cars are reaching $34,000 to $35,000 at national collector car auctions. So when you find one such as this 1966 Mustang Convertible being offered here by Cool Cars in Pompano Beach, Florida, you have to take notice. It is red with a black convertible top and black interior. Originally it was a six cylinder car from the factory but now has a 289 ci V8. With a price of just $22,995, it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy.

Nothing original here. This 1937 Chevy Street Rod Pickup was built on a 1994 Chevy S10 pickup frame with an LT-1 engine and 700r4 trans and S10 posi rear end. The frame has tubular arms in front and QA1 coilovers and the rear is 4-linked. The body is actually fiberglass, hood, fenders and grille shell. The cab is steel and bed is S10 sportside bed with wood flooring. The interior is leather with bucket seats, has power steering, power disc brakes, air conditioning and 10-cd changer and amp. Check out the photos. This is a lotta' truck for the money. Can you say "quality driver?" Make sure you have it inspected. But Hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday if it lasts that long. The asking price is $26,995.

Among Volkswagen collectors, the hot Beetle bodied VW to find is the late cycle production fuel injected Super Beetle convertibles. Here is a 1978 VW Super Beetle Convertible with the 1600 cc Fuel Injected engine, by far the fastest VW of its day. This one is being offered for sale by Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois (a Suburb of Chicago.) They say it is a smooth running FI ragtop with a 4-speed manual transmission. They list recent work done includes the master cylinder, new starter, new battery and air filter. It has factory chrome wheels. You may want to inspect this one before you buy, because the price is unbelievable. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with an asking price of $6,900. No, that is not a misprint.

You can fantasize that you are the Terminator when you ride this 2004 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. "Ahhh-nald" would be so proud. Classic Car Liquidators in Sherman, Texas has come up with this offering. They do not have a great deal of information in their ad about it so be sure to have it inspected. The only thing they tell you is that it has a quick detach windshield and Bassani two-into-one header. The bike does look good in the photos. We are not sure how Classic Car Liquidators does it but they continue to come up with great vehicles at very affordable prices. This classic motorcyclwe should be yours. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY this week. The asking price is $7,999.

Classic Ford pickups from the 1960's are lookiing pretty good these days. Not long ago they just looked old. But now they have are starting to gain collector attention. Her is a 1963 Ford F100 Pickup from Decatur, Indiana. The private seller says it is all original with a 223 inline 6 cylinder engine and 3-on-a-tree manual transmission. He says it has a perfect wood bed and drives straight. He also notes that is is clean under the hood and under the body. Somehow he says the body has survived with no dents. This is a short-wide stepside, very popular among classic pickup collectors. It will be our DEAL of the DAY this week. The asking price is $14,500.

You may want to note that this 1968 Ford Ranchero was a special order purchase with a Code 74 Meadowlark yellow exterior and parchment interior. It was a West Coast Canadian car (like being from California here in the U.S.) The private Canadian seller says the chrome is in great condition, new A/C original equipment, and comes with a 200 ci 6 cylinder rebuilt engine. He says it runs like new. He describes the truck bed as being "mint" like nothing was every carried in it. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy it, but the price is very tempting. It will be our DEAL of the DAY this week. The asking price is $18,000.
