When Carroll Shelby was asked which of his cars was his favorite, he told the reporter he always thought his 1968 Shelby GT500 King of the Road Convertible was the best Mustang he ever built. The GT500 KR was a one-year only model Shelby exclusively built in 1968. It featured the 428 ci Cobra Jet engine with heads and internals specially tuned. With a wink and a nod they rated it at 335 hp, but everyone knew it was way more powerful, probably around 450 horsepower.
This week a private Canadian collector is offering a 1968 Shelby GT500KR Convertible for sale from his collection. He considers it to be a very clean original with numbers matching 428CJ big block motor and drivetrain. He notes the "excellent original interior with working tilt away (steering wheel) and other OEM features." He describes the paint as being "impeccable." In order to understand the condition class on this Shelby King of The Road edition you have to review the photos of the undercarriage. The photos show a pristine red oxide underside so clean you could eat off of it. Yet it does not seem to be "over restored." Just as you would expect from such a big block specimen, he tells us it runs strong.
They only made 518 KR convertibles in 1968. Just 200 KR’s were built with the C6 automatic transmission. This 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible survivor shown here is one of them. 1968 was the first year the GT500 was produced as a convertible. Plus it was the first year that they referred to the Shelby Mustang as a Shelby Mustang Cobra because of the R code 428 Cobra Jet engine. The R code cars came with a funtional Ram Air scoop.
Redesigned with fiberglass front end, hood, and rear end, the Shelby KR convertible came with the Mercury Cougar style sequential tail lights, and with an upgraded suspension, improving it over earlier year models.
Although it now resides in Canada, the Shelby GT500KR convertible is registered in the Shelby Registry. It comes with a deluxe version Marti Report and a copy of the original invoice. Carrol Shelby's signature is present on the glove box. What an excellent opportunity to own an investment grade Shelby Mustang.

The most popular "car porn" photo to come across our Twitter feed this week was a Gold Bugatti Veyron posted by @FASTANDFURlOUS9. At last count, it had 334 "Loves" from Twitter fans. There are only a couple of Gold Bugatti Veyrons in the world. With justl 468 Veyrons in total ever produced, how many could have a gold wrap like this one? (Actor Jamie Foxx and a Saudi businessman are both said to have one.) The Twitter handle @FASTANDFURlOUS9 is a spoof site revving up energy for a F&F9 movie. It is much anticipated that Universal Studios will announce something in the near future about another F&F film. Last year a "sneak peak" poster was floated briefly on Twitter showing Dom Torretto standing next to a resto mod Ford Falcon GT and a Matt Damon image in the skyline over him. Was it a marketing tease or a speculative wish? Anyone have any input? Our Twitter page is @carsonlinetweet.

The Mongoose is the animal specially skilled at killing cobras. In Italian it is Mangusta. That was to be the legacy of the 1969 DeTomaso Mangusta. It was set to be the Cobra killer. This one is being offered for sale by a private seller from Plymouth, Michigan. It received its award winning concourse restoration in 2015. It presents in Jaguar Cashmere paint and Oxblood leather interior, and the seller says it has its original Ford 302 V8 engine and drivetraiin. The original design was done by Giorgetto Giugiaro for DeTomaso. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful sports cars to evolve in the "modern age" one of the first truly exotic sports car designs. Only 401 Mangustas were produced by DeTomaso. They figure that only about 240 have survived thru today. The owner has had this car for 22 years. It is being offered for sale for the first time.

The 1989 Chevy Lumina race car which Tom Cruise drove in the movie "Days of Thunder" has been revived and is being offered for sale by Ideal Classic Cars of Venice, Florida. Yes, the Mello Yello No. 51 driven by Cole Trickle, Cruise's character in the Paramount Pictures 1990 movie has resurfaced. The famous movie car has been professionally restored by Laughlin Race Cars of Spartanburg, South Carolina. It is powered by a 650hp NASCAR V8 engine with a billet crankshaft, forged pistons, 4-speed race transmission, a Tilton triple disc clutch and more. This is a truly awesome car that is sure to get anyone's heart racing. A race car featured in a well-known motion picture feature movie has unlimited potential to appreciate in vallue. Summer brings some of the best collector car shows and auctions of the year. You may have noticed many of the incredible cars heading to auction with Carlisle Events and RM Sotheby's as features in this very newsletter! While the Spring Carlisle Show and Spring Auburn Auctions will be great places to see cars, they're far from the only destination you should be setting this summer. Click here to see our list of some of our favorite summer car shows and cruises. Then start making plans for some epic summer adventure!
By this time next week we'll be listening to the staccato of the auctioneer's rythmic chant at the Spring Carlisle Auction, April 19-21, 2018, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Our Cars-On-Line car show team will be there to bring you all the live action from the Carlisle Fairgrounds. This is a chance to see some "blue collar" American iron selling at the highest bid. Here are some of the fresh listings added to the auction docket this week:
A 1969 Mustang Mach 1 R Code 428CJ big block muscle car finished in Black Jade with a shaker hood and Mach 1 stripe will be one of the featured cars at the Spring Carlisle Auction next week. The popular color scheme was available in 1969 only. The Carlisle Auction team tells us this is a matching numbers car with only 31,000 original miles. The big 428 c.i. V8 mates up with a 4-speed manual transmission with original interior which has been correctly restored. A Lime Gold metallic 1969 Mustang Mach 1 R Code will also be offered in a separate sale.
A red 1957 Ford Thunderbird will have everyone's eye as it crosses the auction stage next week. That is because this particular T-Bird is a very rare E Code with the 312 ci V8 topped with two four-barrell carburetors and the famous chromed air cleaner. The Carlisle Auction team describes it as a breathtaking rotisserie restoration on a very rare 270 hp engine with an automatic transmission. It came heavily optioned with power steering, power brakes, power seat, factory telescoping steering column.
First generation Chevrolet Camaro Z/28s are among the most sought after muscle cars on the planet. So relish the thought of owning this IAAA certified 1969 Camaro Z/28 which will be offered next week at the Spring Carlisle Auction. VIN number 124379N608602. The Carlisle Auction team tells us it has been inspected and certified by Camaro Hi-Performance out of Eldersburg, MD. According to their data and historical Chevrolet records, this car is an original Norwood built Z28 302 /290 hp V8 with Muncie 4-speed and factory 12-bolt rear end. Trim tag, engine and rear axle are certified as real and authentic.
According to the owner, this 1961 Corvette Convertible has only 16,838 actual miles on it. It would only seem natural to assume that the 3-speed transmission is original to the car. It has a Chevrolet 283 V8 small block motor. They do not specify that it is original. The Carlisle Auction team says it has a new convertible top and whitewall tires. They say it runs and drives great. You will be able to preview the Corvette in the auction gallery. It is not often that you get a chance to own a low-mile treasure like this one.

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted in the DEAL of the DAY feature on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
Something unusual is happening in the collector car market. Just look at today's DEALs of the DAY selections and I think you will agree that there are a lot of very desirable cars coming on the market in very affordable price ranges. This 1965 Corvette Convertible from a private collector in Carlsbad, New Mexico was just listed yesterday. Take into account that the seller disclaims that this is not a numbers matching Corvette. This is a "cruise around with the top down" type of car. He says it only has 68,916 miles. The average value on a '65 Corvette in No. 3 condition is $53,500 according to the Hagerty Price Guide. This one will be our DEAL of the DAY for $41,500.
Ford's Sunliner convertible series were produced in the '50s and '60s, a very popular Ford Motor Company product for collectors. Many of the old Ford Galaxies are difficult to maintain but here is one that would be worth having inspected. This 1961 Ford Galaxie Sunliner is being offere for sale by a private collector from North Royalton, Ohio. This Desert Gold color (yellow) can be very popular with collectors on the convertible models. The owner passed away a few years ago and now the family is selling this treasured car. They say it has new brakes, shocks, exhaust, tires/wheels and converted AM/FM radio still new in the box (currently may be found in the trunk.) It has the 352 ci V8 police interceptor engine. That makes it worth over $30,000 in the Hagerty Price Guide. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday with an asking price of just $21,000.
This is exciting. Here is a chance to own one of the very desirable Shelby late model retro Mustangs by Ford. Did you think you could never afford a Shelby? Times change. Here is a 2007 Shelby GT special edition which has been offered for sale by a private seller from Carteret, New Jersey. Don't be misled, this one sounds like it has been well cared for too. The seller says it is a 4.6 L. with only 37,500 miles, garage kept, black on black, documented Shelby with authentication papers. The deal includes the Borla Catback exhaust, performance intake, rear sequential tail lights, side louvers and more. He says he has all of the original parts taken off for the upgrades. Who would have thought you would be able to buy a low-mile, late model Shelby at this price? It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday with an asking price of $24,900.
Beverly Hills Car Club is at it again. They specialize in finding treasure buried in the storage areas of Hollywood and the greater Los Angeles area. This week this found this Bolero red 1967 Camaro RS with the black interior. They say it is an excellent original California car which has had the same owner for many years. This should not be confused for a show car. It comes equipped with a strong V8 with an automatic transmission and alloy wheels. They say it is extremely clean and presentable. . They say it is mechanically sound. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy so as to confirm that it is right for you. But it will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The price is listed at $24,750.
Porsche sports cars are such precision performance cars that they earn a respect that no other brand can touch. When a Groveland, California dealer listed his 1999 Porsche 911 Coupe this week we couldn't believe the low price. He says it was "impeccably maintained and owned by a noted Bay Area Porsche mechanical specialist." Warranties may be purchased with the car. "ZERO rust, no accidents," he says. Hagerty Valuation tool (after 15% deduction for no documented MIS fix) has it valued at $21,675 average value for No. 2 condition; while a No. 3 condition model 996 like this one, average sale price is $16,150. Have it inspected to find out what condition class this one is in. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with an asking price of $16,900.
1976 was to be the final year for the Eldorado convertible and the car was heavily promoted by General Motors as “the last American convertible”. Some 14,000 would be sold, many purchased as investments. I remember selling one of these cars with very low miles for over $100,000. Today, P.J.'s Auto World in Clearwater, Florida has a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible for sale at a deep discount to the anticipated collector value back in the 1970's and 1980's. Will these cars ever sell for $100,000 again? Maybe not, but here is one with only 52k original miles that which be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price from P.J.'s is only $12,900.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
