In July we showed newsletter readers an Iridescent Grey 1963 Studebaker Avanti R-2 from Specialty Sales Classics. Even among Avantis this particular example was rare because of its paint. They only produced Avantis in grey for three months during the first year of production. (It replaced black while Studebaker worked out a problem with the black paint showing imperfections in the fiberglass bodies.) Studebaker built just 3,834 examples of the Studebaker Avanti R-2 in 1963 and 809 in 1964 when their financial difficulties required them to halt production on the R-2 assembly line. It was one of the most innovative vehicles of its time, but even the Avanti could not make up for years of poor sales. We offered a further look into its history on our Cars On Line Blog here: 1963 Studebaker Avanti R-2 Listed in California.
We capped off July with a rare 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T from a private seller out of Indiana. The Hemi Orange Mopar was a trailered show car that had been in the same family since 1981. It retained its original sheet metal and came equipped with the Super Track Pack option. There were 356 Hemi Challengers produced altogether. This example was one of only 137 R/T hardtops that came from the factory with the E74 Hemi V8 and 4-speed manual transmission. We knew it was a serious muscle car for a top collection. Today it is marked SOLD. This 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T is one of the candidates for Cars On Line CAR of the YEAR. Click here to vote!

In August we traveled to Reno, Nevada for Hot August Nights 2017. The show was billed as "the largest classic car and nostalgia event in the U.S." and featured over 10,000 cars at Reno area casinos and downtown show displays. It wasn't just a car show. It was a tribute to car culture. People from all over the world gathered to participate in nightly cruises, show and shines, and even drag races in the desert. It was all about cruisin' and fun in the summer sun, the way they did it back in the '50s and '60s. Awards for the downtown show were given out too. This year the Hot August Nights 2017 Cup Award went to a familar face: Bruce Wanta's 1936 Packard Model 1401C Roadster "The Mullholland Speedster." We covered all the shining moments from the show. See it on the Cars On Line News Blog here: Reno's Hot August Nights 2017. Stay in the car show loop by following Cars On Line on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
In mid-August we featured a top ranked national show car in the Cars On Line newsletter. Readers were introduced to a 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe known on the West Coast as "Whiplash." The flamed show car was designed, fabricated, and built at Steve's Auto Restoration in Portland, Oregon. (You may remember Steve's Auto Restoration took the Ridler Award this year for their 1933 Renaissance Roadster.) Over 4,000 hours of work was put into the build, which featured a FE 427 Ford side-oiler motor with BDS injection system. "Whiplash" had been shown on the West Coast for several years and was even entered into the Portland Roadster Show Hall of Fame. American Classics & Hot Rods in Newberg, Oregon listed the top-end show car for sale. "Whiplash" is one of this year's contenders for Cars On Line CAR of the YEAR. Click here to vote!

During the first weekend of September, we found ourselves in Auburn, Indiana for the 2017 Auburn Fall Auction and Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival. The Cars On Line team provided newsletter readers with live on-the-spot coverage from the auction. It was exciting! The star of the Auburn Fall Auction was a 1933 Duesenberg SJ Swept Panel Phaeton. When the beautiful motorcar came across the auction block, the very first bid was $1 million — we've never seen that happen before. Eventually the Duesenberg SJ sold for $2.3 million. Many other high profile classics and muscle cars crossed the block. See our coverage from the event here: Fall Auburn Auction 2017 by Auctions America. We also spent some time at the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival. The annual Labor Day Homecoming was such an amazing display of Americana. We visited Eckhart Park for the Concours in the Park and stayed for the spectacular Parade of Classics. Our final stop was a tour through the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum. We documented all our adventures in the Cars On Line News Blog here: Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival Homecoming 2017.
We featured this grandiose 1938 Cadillac V-16 Series 90 Convertible Coupe from The Auto Collections in September. When the Cadillac V-16 Series 90 Convertible Coupe first came out there were very few produced. In fact, only ten Series 90 V-16 convertible coupes were made in 1938. The Cadillac we featured was ordered new through the Scotts Smith Cadillac Company and fitted with an Imperial Limousine body. It was acquired by Mr. James Kiser in 1952, who would replace the limousine body with a Series 75 body. He then proceeded to recreate a Series 90 Convertible Coupe. It was finished in the 1980s by Russell Jackson and the careful work was detailed in an issue of the Cadillac Club's magazine, The Self Starter. We offered a further look into its history on our Cars On Line Blog here: 1938 Cadillac V-16 Series 90 Convertible Coupe. This Cadillac V-16 is one of the candidates for the Cars On Line CAR of the YEAR. Click here to vote!
One of the most valuable and desirable muscle cars from the era has to be the 1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda. This one appeared in our newsletter mid-September and comes with a visual inspection report by non-other than Galen Govier, the Mopar historian. It comes with more documentation too, including a broadcast sheet, original VIN plate, and more. The seller from Northford, Connecticut notes the original Dana 60 rear end, spare tire, inflator can, and jack. Do you agree with many Mopar enthusiasts that this Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda represents the Big Fish of its time? It's up to you to make it this year's Cars On Line CAR of the YEAR! Vote here.

Muscle car enthusiasts took note of this 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 B Code 406 which appeared in our first newsletter of October. Listed by Midwest Car Exchange, we're told it had a 406 High Performance V8 breathing through a single Holley four-barrel carburetor. Much of its history remains unknown though. Check it out here!
Daniel Schmidt & Co. delivered our readers one of the finest motorcars to survive the pre-war era in the last week of October. It's a 1937 Packard Twelve Roadster that comes with a brown leather interior, dual sidemounted spares, rumble seat, and a factory Packard trunk. It also features a golf club compartment just behind the passenger door, something special for the exclusive clientele. Collectors were pleased to see this 1969 COPO Camaro L72 427 as one of our features in early November. It's one of the special 427 big block Camaros ordered at the request of dealerships like Yenko, Fred Gibb Chevrolet, Nickey Chevrolet, Berger, Dana, and Baldwin-Motion. This one is still available from the private seller in Boise, Idaho and is said to be one of the highest scoring show cars in the world. You be the judge. Take a look at the ad and then come back to tell us if you think we should dub it the Cars On Line CAR of the YEAR! Click here to vote.
Joe, Jr. built upon his father's experience and established auto business with the creation of this custom show car, a 1949 Chevy Convertible dubbed “The White Chevy.” It was an extreme build for the time and even made the cover of Custom Rodder Magazine in May of 1962. Relations of the family reproduced that car for its 50th anniversary and that incredible piece is now for sale on Cars On Line. Think it deserves to be the Cars On Line CAR of the YEAR? You get to decide. Vote here!

Right off the bat December started with an impressive and well respected muscle car from Specialty Sales Classics of Benicia, California. It's a 1970 Chevelle SS Convertible, said to be ultra rare with a 454 CID LS6 V8 engine under the hood. It's well documented, appraised, and mechanically overhauled to the highest standards. Best of all, that work was done just 415 miles ago. Only a handful are still known to exist according to the ad, so it's a rare treat to see one in this condition with as much provenance. It enjoyed just three prior owners and is bordering on #2 condition. Get a closer look in the ad. This one's still for sale!
In December we introduced newsletter readers to a very special 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible. Not only was the Mustang Cobra an all original survivor car, but it also came with a story. According to the seller, he bought the Shelby KR from the mother of the original owner who died in Vietnam while serving his country. Only 518 KR Convertibles were made in 1968. This particular example wore Candy Apple Red paint and featured the R-Code 428 Cobra Jet engine under the hood. The GT500 KR was rated at 335 horsepower, but everyone knew it was way more powerful — probably around 450 horsepower. Carroll Shelby told reporters the King of the Road edition was his favorite Shelby Mustang. We offered a further look into its history and documentation on our Cars On Line Blog here: 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible Survivor.
