Sometimes we forget how popular custom designed automobiles were throughout our automotive history here in the USA. As a youngster, the legendary Harley Earl cut his teeth on customizing Cadillacs in California. That's how General Motors noticed him and hired him to head up his own design department at GM in 1928.
Naturally, one of the first cars Earl worked on was the Cadillac. In those early years when Cadillac wanted to put out a grandiose V-16 motorcar, Earl and his crew created beautiful custom coach-like designs. They say during the next decade there were over 50 different looks designed for the Cadillac V-16's, many by Fleetwood.
The most popular was the 1938 Cadillac V-16 Series 90 Convertible Coupe like the one you see pictured here. This one, chassis number 5270289, was fitted with an Imperial Limousine body when it came from the factory. Acquired in 1952 by James Kiser of Wisconsin, it would remain in his family for over half a century. But knowing how popular the 1938 Cadillac V-16 Series 90 Convertible Coupe was, Kiser had the limousine body replaced with a Series 75 body which fit the chassis perfectly. He then proceeded to recreate a Series 90 Convertible Coupe. Finished in the 1980s by Russell Jackson, the fresh V-16 Series 90 Convertible Coupe was featured in a contemporary issue of the Cadillac Club's magazine, The Self Starter, detailing the careful work completed to exactingly specifications to reproduce one of the ten original Series 90 cars.
The vintage 1938 Cadillac V-16 Series 90 Convertible Coupe is now being offered for sale by The Auto Collections in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Auto Collections is one of our favorite museums of automotive history. Because it is housed in the Linq Casino in downtown Las Vegas, right on the strip, it is a special treat to visit. You must put it on your bucket list.

The "star car" for last weekend's Auburn Fall Auction 2017 by Auctions America was a 1933 Duesenberg SJ "Swept Panel" Phaeton with coachwork by LaGrande. The bidding started at $1 million on the very first bid. When have you seen that happen? However bidding bogged down at $2.1 million just short of the reserve price. But this week Auctions America announced that the sale went through for $2.3 million (including buyer's commision.) Auctions America called the rare Duesenberg the "most important automobile ever offered by Auctions America at the Auburn Fall Auction." And that's saying a lot, since Auburn, Indiana is the home of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Motorcar Company. Be sure to follow this link to our coverage of the Auburn Fall Auction 2017 in Auburn.
As our Cars On Line car show team was wrapping up their visit to the Auburn Fall Auction during the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival, they took time to visit the A-C-D Museum. If you haven't been there, it is an auto museum you must put on your bucket list. (Click here to review our coverage of events in Auburn, Indiana on Labor Day Weekend.) We included a slide show of photos from the museum on our Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival coverage. If you followed our coverage over Labor Day Weekend you may already have seen the video of the Parade of Classics, and the concours in the park. It is the biggest display of Auburns, Cords or Duesenbergs you will ever see in one blog post.
We are always so grateful when our advertisers tell us about their sales here on our website. It makes our day when we find out that your buyer came from your Cars On Line ad.
Rick from Ontario, Canada went out of his way to let us know our Run Till Sold ad worked for him. "I found that Cars On Line is viewed by many, many people," he told us when he notified us that his 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 SOLD through a Cars On Line ad. "It has become a very popular site for buyers and sellers. Great site and keep up the great work." Rick from Ontario, Canada SOLD his 1970 Dodge Dart. Now Rick knows why we always say, "You can advertise anywhere ... but you can sell on Cars On Line." To view more vehicles SOLD thru Cars On Line this week, follow this link to the SOLD section below.
The Auto Collections in Las Vegas just posted a Pontiac muscle car which will send ripples through the Pontiac collector community. This 1963 Pontiac Catalina Ventura with the rare 421 ci HO big block motor takes second place only to the Super Duty Pontiacs of that era. Basically a street driven car rather than a drag racer, it comes with its orignal numbers matching 421 ci HO motor rated at 370 hp, fed by a Tripower set of carbs, and a T coded 4-speed transmission. They say the rare Cordovan paint was redone in 1990, and the interior is done in the original tri-tone pattern (see photos.) According to the ad copy, a Pontiac Historical Society build sheet reproduction verifies that all the engine numbers match. They tell us it was judged Senior Gold at the POCI Nationals in 2007.
Take a video test drive of this 1940 Ford Deluxe Woody Wagon with Laguna Classic Cars of Laguna Beach, California. It features beautiful woodwork, chromed door handles, and more. The interior is dressed with fresh leather, Mercedes-spec carpeting, and it even smells brand new according to the video, with only 146 miles on it since the build. Watch it here! Everything is new and the build was expertly done. The driver says it doesn't compare to any other Woodie he's ever ridden. Don't miss it.

This listing is so amazing we had to show it to you here. Classic Auto Showplace in Troy, Michigan just posted this 2003 Dodge Viper as being in their current inventory. This exotic roadster is very desirable. You never see them offered for sale in this price range. Hurry and call Classic Auto Showplace so you don't miss out on this one. They have not yet listed their description so we don't know the condition. This one is definitely one to check out. They indicate that it has only 67k miles. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $29,975.
Volkswagen collectors know that the top level classic VW is the Super Beetle with the 1600 cc 4-cylinder VW engine. So when this 1971 VW Super Beetle Cabriolet was listed this week by Streetside Classics, we knew it had to be a DEAL of the DAY candidate. They tell us, "The color coordination on this one is a true standout. White is a fun and timeless, especially in this glossy clearcoat hue." They add that the car drives tight and true. This one has been upgraded to front disc brakes. Click this link to view a walk-around video and hear the distinct sound of the air-cooled VW engine. And the best part of this car is the price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday with an asking price of $9,995.
A 1968 Dodge Dart GTS is the hot muscle car deal on the Cars On Line website this week. It is a 340 ci V8 car with 727 automatic, 8 3/4 narrowed and 3:23 Sure Grip rear end, which comes from western Canada originally. A private seller from Gorrie, Ontario is now selling this desirable Mopar muscle car. He describes it as being an "extremely straight clean body" with a rare and popular exterior color. He also notes that it was originally a 283 ci V8 car but now has an NOM 340 engine. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday because you just don't find these cars at this price. The asking price is $22,968.
Another great muscle car is being offered by a private seller in Midway City, California. He qualifies that this 1971 Oldsmobile 442 is a real deal Cutlass 442 2-door hardtop with the 455 big block motor. He describes the engine as rebuilt and correct for the 442. "Runs great, low miles, must sell," he tells us. What strikes us about this one is the color scheme. You have to admit it takes a good picture. Since the description leaves a lot to the imagination, you should call to find out more about this muscle car era hot rod. But hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. If you are the first one to make an offer you can own it for $18,900.
We were impressed with the price on this 1986 Porsche 911 Cabriolet with the 3.2 L six cylinder engine. The cosmetics are obvioiusly impaired (as you can tell from the photos) so don't get it confused with a highly detailed and restored example. Call Beverly Hills Car Club to get the full story on the condition class. As always, you should have it inspected before you buy. But these cars are so highly desirable that you don't often get a chance to own one for this kind of price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with a price tag of $19,950.
Now don't get too excited here. True, this is a highly desirable 1971 Ford Bronco with a lift kit. And, yes, these classic sport utilities are arguably the hottest trend in the market right now. But be aware that Motorcar Studio in Atlanta, Georgia takes great pains to show you that areas of rust on this body. Both in the photos and in the video, they show you imperfect and paint deprived sheet metal and rust, plus the poor condition of the interior. Click here to see the video. Unless you know these trucks you are not a good candidate to restore one. Yet, this one will be our DEAL of the DAY for the right buyer. The asking price is $14,900.
Factory Five Racing is one of the premier builders of Shebly Cobra replicas. They have one of the best names in the Cobra reproduction market. It is rare that we ever come across a 1967 Shelby Cobra Roadster Mark 1 by Factory Five Racing in this price range. The one is #1185 and the private seller says it was just inspected in Maryland. It comes with a Ford Cobra 5.0L engine with chrome headers to the side exhaust; has a 5-speed transmission, new suspension, power steering, new clutch plate, RCI racing shoulder harnesses, SW gauges, dust cover and cockpit cover w/ snaps. He indicates that there are only 6,839 miles. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price is $24,900.
