These days there are more muscle cars that have been restored than remain in original survivor condition. How important is it for a muscle car to be original? Car collectors will continue to debate whether purely original muscle cars in well preserved condition with low miles are more valuable than fully restored versions of the same car. But the cars that you find in top Mopar collections will often be unrestored original survivors.
Here is a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda from Oklahoma that puts a perspective on the argument. Having been in private collections for the last forty years, this Hemi Cuda is one of 284 produced with a 4-speed manual transmission in 1970. The seller notes that it comes equipped with its original 426/425 horsepower Hemi engine, dual 4-barrel carburetors, Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, factory shaker hood, A34 Super Track Pak option with 4.10 gears, power brakes, black bucket seat interior and Rallye wheels. A Mopar collector just can't ask for more than that. It has been inspected and tuned up by such experts as Roger Gibson and others. Their comments indicate that this car is one of the top two Hemi Cudas left in the entire world. Gibson said it was in "amazing" condition, according to the current owner.
The Tor-red 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda is said to retain all its original sheet metal, and comes with documented ownership history since it was purchased new. The seller says it comes with its original numbers matching drivetrain, excellent original floors, trunk floor and excellent original seat covers, carpet, seat belts and headliner. The tires have been changed once, and it now sits on 1976 dated Goodyear Polyglas tires. The seller says, "It looks like it just rolled off the assembly line." He says he never takes it to shows, so this one has only rarely been seen. It is a totally fresh addition to the collector car market.
Muscle car collectors who aspire to own original unrestored survivor cars bemoan that fact that nut and bolt restorations score so well at concours judging events. That seems to imply that unrestored original cars might not be as important. Yet unrestored survivor cars will get premium values at nationally known auctions. Think about it. The Mona Lisa would be rendered valueless if it were to be restored. No one would think of doing such a thing to a priceless masterpiece. Top muscle car collectors will often pay more for a well preserved original with low miles than a No. 1 condition restored trailer queen.

Congratutations to Kyle Tucker, (@DSEKyle) owner of Detroit Speed (DSE), for receiving the Goodguys Trendsetter and SEMA Show NRIA Industry Recognition awards on Wednesday evening at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. His 1987 Camaro DSE-Z, built with Detroit Speed equipment, is an example of the trend setting speed equipment available at DSE these days.
See a quick video of the 1987 Camaro DSE-Z by following this link. Kyle will be competing in the Optima Batteries Ultimate Street Car Challenge finale at the Las Vegas Speedway, November 4-5, 2017. Companies like Detroit Speed are introducing a whole new generation of young Americans to street car building on the LS1 platform by providing top speed equipment for Autocross and speed events.
Speaking of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Shelby American revealed the new 2018 Shelby 1000 package at the show this week. It includes updates such as a 5.2L supercharged engine that features best-of-the-best internals, a traditional 90-degree crank, modified GT350 cylinder heads and a 4.5L Whipple supercharger. The wide body front valance package also gives a new look to the retro Mustang GT.
A new high flow fuel system, plus intercooler, transmission, ECU and special tuning make the 1000 horsepower upgrades sustainable. Even the suspension gets an upgrade. Only 50 of these packages will be built each year. Upgrades will be performed at Shelby American in Las Vegas or at one of their approved shops around the globe. The package will be available in the first quarter of 2018.

We recently had a prospective buyer inquire about this attractive 1955 Chevy 3100 Pickup. It appeared to be a quality car from the ad photographs, but the buyer wanted to make sure prior to agreeing to the sale. You can see what the inspector found in the sample inspection report here. We've included 50 of the over 100 images the inspector included, as well as all of the inspector's comments so you can see just how thorough our professional inspectors are. Not only did the prospective buyer get a detailed report, but the inspector gave reasons for why some information should and shouldn't be alarming, as well as an assessment of the modifications made to the original truck. You can expect the same dedication from any of the inspectors that are part of our Cars On Line Inspection Referral Service.
U.S. light vehicle sales were a mixed bag during the month of October, as some automakers reported sales gains and others declines. A total of 1.3 million cars and trucks rolled off dealership lots, putting overall sales down 1.4 percent compared to October of last year. The numbers have been released by WardsAuto.com. Their data center provides the most trusted numbers for new car sales.
General Motors, the nation’s largest car manufacturer, said its total sales fell 2.3 percent to 252,650 cars and trucks. Ford, the second largest U.S. automaker, saw its sales grow. The company reported its sales rose 5.9 percent to 194,286 vehicles. Meanwhile Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) finished the month with a hefty drop in sales, reporting its U.S. sales were down 13.2 percent to 151,991 cars and trucks.
The big Japanese automakers posted small sales gains in October. Toyota, the largest Japanese car manufacturer, said it sold 188,434 vehicles last month, a 1.1 percent jump from the same month in 2016. Meanwhile Honda’s overall sales rose 0.94 percent from October 2016 results.
So far, a total of 14.1 million cars and trucks have been sold in the U.S. during 2017, a 1.8 percent decrease over last year at this time.

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be featured in the DEAL of the DAY section on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
The paint and motor of this 1969 Corvette L36 Convertible were professionally done only five years ago according to the seller from Mustang, Oklahoma. We're told it started as an L36 car with a 427ci engine and later had a 350. It remains in good condition with a soft top, new interior, new battery, and more. It's ready to drive, and at this price, it won't be long until someone snags it up. It's just $22,900, and will be our first DEAL of the DAY feature. See it on the front page of Cars On Line this Saturday.
A seller in Warwick, Rhode Island listed this beauty at a shockingly reasonable price this week. It's a 1942 Oldsmobile 98, said to be among a sparse production cycle and you can see it in a SLIDE SHOW ad. We're told it's in solid shape and is mostly original except for a repaint which looks great in the photographs. It has an original flathead six with automatic transmission, solid undercarriage, original floorboards, and more. The price is just $9,900. Quite a deal for a vintage classic that runs and drives well. Get a closer look in the ad.
Here's another SLIDE SHOW feature, this time from a seller in Mesquite, Texas. It's for a 1967 Pontiac GTO that's said to come with a strong 400ci engine, automatic transmission, sure grip rear end, and factory A/C. The current owner has had it since 1995 and can detail the changes made since then, as well as vouch for the performance. You can see the details in the ad, but don't wait too long. The price on this one is as attractive as the ad photographs, just $27,500. It will be a DEAL of the DAY feature and on the front page of Cars On Line early next week.
Our DEAL of the DAY features for next week will include this 1932 Ford Pickup from a private seller in Freehold, New Jersey. It's said to be an original steel pickup that remains unchopped and fitted with a 350 Chevy engine, 350 automatic transmission, and 10-bolt Chevy rear end. We believe the seller when they say it's fun to drive. The price is just $18,900.
We're told the PHS report accompanying this 1975 Pontiac Trans Am confirms the 400ci motor and original Muncie M21 transmission. It now has a Th400 automatic, new brakes, new front windshield, new subframe, and much more. You can get the details in the private ad or visit it in person in Long Beach, California. The price is just $17,375 and the seller is willing to entertain reasonable offers. That makes it worthy of a DEAL of the DAY feature spot in next week's line up.
You've got our attention, Gateway Classic Cars of Missouri. A Cobra for less than $30,000 bears some consideration. This 1984 AC Westcott Cobra is listed at just $24,995 and is said to come with a 460 CID V8 engine, and automatic transmission, leather interior, and custom wheels. They say it shows some age in places, but it still looks great in the ad photographs. This might be the perfect candidate for a full inspection. You can get the details for that here. They say it's a great running, inexpensive AC Cobra kit car. Go check it out here.
Our last DEAL of the DAY feature for next week is for a 1972 Camaro from a private seller in Mesquite, Texas. It has a strong 1970 350 o1o block, aluminum intake, tachometer, and working gauges, even the gas gauge! You can see it from almost every angle in the SLIDE SHOW ad. The seller says it's showing its age in places but you can judge for yourself. The price is right, at just $14,500. Don't miss this one!
