One of the great moments in Indianapolis 500 history happened when the 1972 Hurst Olds Indy Pace Car paraded around the 2-and-a-half mile track at the Indianapolis raceway as the gorgeous blond Linda Vaughn cavorted with a giant Hurst shifter atop the decklid. It was a vision etched in the memory of every young male Baby Boomer.
It all started when none of the American auto manufacturers would step up to produce a pace car for the Indianapolis 500 race in 1972. It had previously been considered a tradition and an honor for American auto manufacturers to promote an Indy 500 Pace Car edition each year for America's greatest race. But by 1972 manufacturers were shying away from the honor because of liability issues and the cost of supplying Pace Car festival edition vehicles for the race. (It was traditional for the manufacturer to provide Pace Car vehicles for VIP services as well as festival Pace Car editions at the track.) So Hurst Performance Products saw the opportunity to promote its brand at the Brickyard. They made the most of it. The 1972 Hurst Olds Indy Pace Car Convertible emerges as one of the rarest and most desirable muscle cars of the era. It was the first time anyone other than an auto manufacturer endeavored such a huge promotion.
A private collector from Dalton, Georgia just posted this 1972 Hurst Oldsmobile Pace Car Convertible for sale in the Cars On Line.com Oldsmobile Muscle Car Section online. It is one of only 130 Hurst Olds Pace Car convertibles produced in 1972. Hurst and Oldsmobile also made 499 Pace Car coupes with Indy 500 Pace Car graphics. About another 50 DeltaRoyale convertibles with Indy Pace Car graphics were on hand as parade vehicles.
The seller says this one has less than 50k miles, and is a matching numbers collector car original. He has owned the car for over 25 years. He says it comes fully loaded. It is an Oldsmobile Nationals 1st place winner, and was invited to display at the 1997 Indy 500 festivities. It was also on display at the Michigan Capital Building during Oldsmobile's 100th Anniversary Celebration in Lansing, Michigan.
At one time it was estimated that only a few of these 1972 Hurst Olds Indy Pace Car Convertibles had survived. One museum in the Midwest told us that only seven were known to exist. However, that has not proven true. Over the years we have featured dozens of them on this website for sale. The problem is that there is no registry that keeps track of the 442's. If any one has more information on the number of survivors please contact us at: [email protected] Much obliged.

A 1969 Camaro Z/28 from Darien Center, New York was marked SOLD this week. Newsletter readers may remember when this car was featured a few weeks ago in this newsletter. At the time the seller said it was an original 1969 with DZ 302 and a 4-speed. You don't always see the Dover White Z's with the black vinyl top and the black stripes. The Houndstooth interior was a nice match for this car. They say it is the original color combination.

Taking a restoration from start to finish can be a daunting task, which is why many collectors turn to experts like those at Precision Restorations to do the work for them. If you don’t have time to spend countless hours stressing out in your garage, then you might want to consider turning toward a professional restoration shop to get the job done. They’ll make sure the vision you have for your classic car becomes reality. It might not come cheap, but it’s an option worth considering. Before you spend the cash though, why not get a complete idea of what the process will entail? Precision Restorations has an e-book available on their website for free, and it details much of the process, and the costs, that you should be ready for.
They detail their estimate costs and explain that each restoration will be different depending on your goals and the original condition of the car. They don’t stop there though. You’ll get some loosely estimated figures to help you decide if investing in a complete estimate will be worth your time. For instance, an engine rebuild could cost anywhere from $3,500 to $8,000. Adding a Rally style stripe could run $600 to $840, while a full Concours quality paint job could run from $20,000 to $25,000. Go to their website here and download the e-book to start planning your project restoration.
Don’t miss this week’s featured video of a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-Dr Hardtop from private seller out of Conway, South Carolina. Watch the video above (or click here) and you’ll see what this iconic American classic has to offer, including a beautiful two-tone red and white paint scheme with matching interior. The seller says the vehicle is very solid; all the panels are in good shape. It’s powered by a 350 V8 with 350 transmission. Watch it go as the seller takes it down the road for a test drive!

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted this week in the DEAL of the DAY feature on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first, though.
Although this one will not be arriving at Cool Cars in Pompano Beach, Florida until next week they are advertising it already to gauge interest. That type of optimism is what you see in the collector car market during a spring rush like we are seeing now. This 1967 Pontiac GTO is priced so right we wanted you to see it here in the DEAL of the DAY feature. The Gold finish with black vinyl roof and black interior was very popular in 1967. It comes with bucket seats and a console. Their ad says this GTO hardtop comes with the big block 389 engine, automatic transmission, power steering and power disc brakes. It will be our featured DEAL of the DAY on Saturday at a price which will grab your attention. They have it for sale for $27,500.
A 1952 MG TD Roadster has been listed by a private seller from Iron Bridge, Ontario, Canada. The price will surprise you. In the ad the seller has it listed for $20,499 in Canadian currency. Our U.S. readers might overlook that fact that it translates into just $14,968 U.S. Since the seller says it is in "mint condition" "original inside and out", you may be tempted to buy it sight unseen. We feel you should always have a car inspected before you buy. The seller says everyting works well ... "tires are like brand new." He says there are still just 77k miles. It all sounds great. If you are in the market for a two-seater sports car, maybe this will be your cream puff. We hope we get a chance to inspect it for you. This one will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday.
Check out the photos on this 1963 Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible just listed for sale by KC Classic Auto out of Lenexa, Kansas. I think you will agree it looks good in the pictures. They say it has the rare 383 Commando big block Mopar motor, 330 hp with a 4-barrel carburetor, 323 Sure Grip, and the push-button Torqueflite 727 transmission and dual exhaust. It is really set up right. They even included a video in their presentation. Follow this link to view the video ad and hear that big 383 Commando rev. Top goes up and down too, I see. It will be our DEAL of the DAY in the coming week. You can own it for $24,900. Or finance it with monthly payments of $296.
This one might be more of a project car than a daily driver, but the potential is definitely there. A 1936 Ford Woodie Wagon was listed by a private seller in Lee, New Hampshire. The price is only $9,000, so you won't get in too deep on this venture. It looks like it was a Depot Hack or a Huckster in its day. It now has a '36 Ford updated running gear. The seller says it runs well. Even though it is a project car we would suggest you have it inspected before you buy. But this is an opportunity for the right buyer. What a street rod it would make! It will be our DEAL of the DAY this week, featured on the front page of our website. That is ... if it lasts that long.
Here is a 1973 Pontiac Grand Am for sale by a private owner from Richmond, Indiana. There is not a lot of information in the ad, but he does indicate there were three owners and it has 84k miles. These Grand Ams were popular muscle cars with nice suspensions and some creature comforts. It has the 400 ci V8 motor with automatic transmission. The seller says it runs and drives great. From the looks of these photos it could be a driver class car. You may want to have it inspected before you buy. But don't wait too long. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later this week. The asking price is only $12,500.
Flemings Ultimate Garage from Rockville, Maryland just posted a sensational looking 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL for sale. These cars were the cats whiskers back in the '70s. All the movie stars drove them. You'll notice that this one comes with an aftermarket MoZender body kit. Flemings tells us it is beautifully restored and loaded with options. It comes with the 4.5-liter aluminum V8 rated at 225 hp, optional automatic overdrive transmission and optional factory air conditioning. It even has upgraded digital sound CD/SAT/Ipod/Bluetoth to stream music. If you've ever wanted a 450 SL, this is the one. It’s going to be our DEAL of the DAY with an asking price of $19,900. Ask about Fleming's extended warranty.
