After all these years, it is still fun to watch. The long trunk of the 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner opens transversely to make way for the roof as it lifts up. The front of the roof swings down as the whole roof moves back and is swallowed by the trunk as the decklid closes. What's left is a smooth looking topless passenger car without the frumpy looking boot area on a regular convertible. It never gets old. They call it a Retractable Hardtop.
We see at least a few of these Ford Retractables advertised here in the Cars On Line newsletter every month. But none are quite like this one. A first year 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable was listed this week equipped from the factory with an E Code dual quad 312 ci V8 engine. If you have never seen one before you are not alone. There were only 39 of these 1957 E Code Ford Retractables ever produced. This is one of them. The Texas seller says you will not find one nicer than his Coral Sand over Raven Black beauty.
He says he still has the original factory invoice for this car, and tells us it was restored by Jerry Miller of Jerry Miller Restorations in Springdale, Arkansas. He is a noted Ford Retractable restoration expert. This one was restored in Coral Sand over Raven Black paint. It came from the factory heavily loaded with options, including: Ford factory Select–Air ac, Continental kit, power steering, power brakes, power windows, Town & Country radio, front bumper Vee Bar, front bumper Wing Guards, backup lights, dual exhaust deflectors, Ford safety package and padded sunvisors.
Ford made the retractable hardtop Fairlanes from 1957 through 1959. The biggest sales year was 1957 when they sold 20,766 retractables. And that was in only the second half of the year since they were actually introduced at mid-year in 1957.
The Texas seller says you will not find one nicer than his '57 Ford Retractable. Follow this link to read our report on the Cars On Line blog site where we talk more about how the top works and the engineering concepts that brought the Ford Retractable into production. There are some interesting facts recorded there which will surprise you.

You definitely have to put it on your bucket list. Follow this link for a preview of the show which opens today. Bob and Donna Boberg of eClassicAutos.com will be covering the event, bringing you photos and videos of the show. Muscle Car Weekly did a great review picking the "Top Ten Quickest Muscle Cars of 1970" based on their quarter-mile times recorded back in the day. They used videos of cars from the Wellburn Collection for their review. The selections were based on times recorded by major magazines back when car mags did new car test drive reports. The idea is that 1970 was the peak of the muscle car market and the most powerful muscle cars were produced that year.
No surprise here. According to a Car Craft Magazine report, the 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda was the fastest car as tested in November of 1969. The Hemi Cuda used was equipped with a 4-speed and 355 gears. It turned in a 13.10 @ 107 miles per hour. It barely eaked out a better time than a 1970 Dodge Challenger SE 426 Hemi car with a 4.10 rear end, which did 13.10 @ 107.2 miles per hour. You can see all the cars in their Top Ten when you click here to view the Muscle Car Weekly video on You Tube.
Fred from Richfield, Wisconsin has been using Cars On Line since the early days of the internet. This week Fred sold his his 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible using a $45.00 Run Till Sold ad. When he notified us of the sale, Fred had this to say about Cars On Line. "Larry and his crew are just great. They will help in any way they can to get your car SOLD!" The car was a time capsule with only 6,996 miles from new. It sold for way over the average value on an Eldorado Convertible.

U.S. light vehicle sales continued to sputter in June as the industry posted its sixth straight monthly decline. A total of 1.5 million cars and trucks rolled off dealership lots, putting overall sales down 3.2 percent compared to June of last year. The numbers have been released by WardsAuto.com. Their data center provides the most trusted numbers for new car sales.
The three major U.S. automakers all posted sharp declines for the month. General Motors, the nation’s largest car manufacturer, said its total sales slipped 4.8 percent to 242,918 cars and trucks. Meanwhile Ford, the second largest U.S. automaker, reported its sales fell 5.7 percent to 221,023 vehicles. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) finished the month with a drop in sales as well, reporting its U.S. sales were down 7.7 percent to 185,970 cars and trucks.
The big Japanese automakers posted modest gains in June. Toyota, the largest Japanese car manufacturer, said it sold 202,376 vehicles last month, a 2.1 percent jump from the same month in 2016. Meanwhile Honda’s overall sales rose 0.78 percent from June 2016 results.
So far a total of 8.4 million cars and trucks have been sold in the U.S. during 2017, a 2.2 percent decrease over last year at this time. U.S. light vehicle sales have lagged behind 2016 levels every month this year. If that trend continues, this year could mark the first decline in industrywide sales since 2009.
Cars On Line was in Brookfield, Wisconsin last weekend for the 51st annual National Meet of the Buick Club of America. They featured some stunning classics, a bustling swap meet, a special division seminar on pre-war Buicks, and took their members on tours of famous area attractions. At the Iola 2017 Car Show this past weekend we got a chance to see the first Camaro ever built, VIN No. 100001. It was a major feature of the Special Concours at the Iola show this year. They were featuring Camaros, Firebirds, Trans Ams, Cougars, Cudas and Challengers in the same feature area. These were all Pony cars that competed against one another in the SCCA Trans Am racing series in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Great concept.
Click this link to follow our coverage of the Iola 2017 Car Show. There you'll see photos and vidoes of some of the star cars, including the original Dragula from the Munsters TV show, driven by Eddie Munster (Butch Patrick.)
The first Hellcat delivered to the state of Michigan is now for sale in Lake Orion. The current owner of this 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat tells us it was well cared for and spared the harsh northern winters. It's never seen rain or snow. The VIN notes that this is a low production number example and the odometer reads just 1,383 miles! It's never been raced or driven on a track and even has an active factory warranty. Get a nice view of the interior in the video above. You can also click here to view!

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted in the DEAL of the DAY front page feature on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
Our top DEAL of the DAY this week is admittedly somewhat of a restoration project. The 1965 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible is being offered for sale by Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. They warn that even though it looks great in the photos, they want you to be aware that it will need bodywork in the floors, fenders, doors and quarter panels. They say that the Oldsmobile 425 cid V8 engine runs well with its 4-barrel carburetor, rated at 360 hp. It has the Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission and comes pretty loaded with power options. See the ad for details. Although the paint looks good in the photos, there is some damage to the decklid. The reason it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday is the price. They are asking just $6,900.
You know what we always say about first generation Ford Thunderbirds. If you find one for less than $30,000, you should buy it. So take a good look at this 1957 Ford Thunderbird from Billings, Montana. It is right on the cutting edge of being a great price. The seller has owned this car since 1979 and says it has always been garaged. It is a hardtop only T-Bird equipped with a 312 ci V8 engine, automatic transmission and comes with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor. He says you have to see it to understand how valuable it really is. This is one that might be worth having inspected before you buy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The price is right on the edge at $29,995.
The most popular hot rod pickups in America are the 1940 and 1941 Ford trucks with the teardrop headlights. This body style was so loved in its day that they have become some of the hottest trucks to customize today. And they are relatively rare. Here is a 1940 Ford Pickup from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin with some '41 features. Highly customized, it looks from the photos like it has nice metal and finish. The seller says it comes with a fuel injected small block Chevy engine, automatic transmission, Mustang II front end and suspension with disc brakes, 9-inch rear end with leaf springs. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday if it lasts that long. The asking price is only $21,000.
To compete with Chevrolet's Nova in the small car universe, Ford brought in the Falcon and Mercury Comet. These cars still have their own followings. This 1965 Mercury Comet Caliente is the sporty model from Mercury. It is a good example of a popular 2 Door Hardtop that had its place in the market, especially since it came with a small block V8 289 engine and automatic transmission. It it showing approximately 85,700 miles, new paint, new interior. It comes with a T-10 4-speed transmission and more. It will be our DEAL of the DAY this coming week. The asking price is $14,995.
A private seller from Jonesboro, Arkansas just listed a 1940 Ford Tudor with a price so good, we just had to make it one of our DEALS of the DAY. According to the seller, the 2-door sedan has 23k miles and comes with a whole list of options, including Vintage A/C. Under the hood you’ll find a 350/400 hp engine with automatic transmission. Don’t forget to take a peek inside at the custom interior! It’s going to be our DEAL of the DAY next week with a price of just $26,000.
If you’re looking for a summer cruiser that’s ready to be enjoyed today, take a look at the 1967 Mercury Meteor Convertible from Lethbridge, AB, Canada. According to the private seller, the convertible is a very nice driver and excellent investment. Under the hood you’ll find a 390ci 4-barrel engine mated to a C6 automatic transmission. Options include: power steering, power brakes, and a modern radio under the dash. This one will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The price is only $15,250.
You're looking at a well-cared for 1979 Pontiac Trans Am from a private seller in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. We're told they owned it for 17 years and that it comes numbers matching with an updated suspension and rear end. Other features include a Pontiac 400 motor, T-10 4-spd transmission, and Hust shifter. The price is just $18,000, making it an ideal pick for one of next week's DEAL of the DAY features.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
