"Rare" is a term which gets misused pretty regularly in advertising promotions these days. But, for once, here is a car worthy of the term. We were pretty excited to see a 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS Z16 for sale this week when Show Your Auto.com made it one of our new listings. They are selling the car from a California collection.
Only 201 Chevelle Malibu Z/16's were ever produced in 1965. Strangely, Chevrolet never advertised the Z16 model Chevelle Malibu and it did not appear on their order form that year. It seems only a select group of Chevrolet afficianadoes and celebrities were made aware of its existence. So even when it was new from the factory this was a rare car.
Show Your Auto.com considers this 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS Z16 as a "trailered show car." They rate it as being in 90 to 96 percent of original showroom condition. "This car includes its numbers matching engine and transmission," they tell us. " ... and has received a recent full restoration to factory specifications, driven only 28 miles since completion." It was originally a red car with red interior. During the restoration the exterior color was changed to black.
What made the Z16 Chevelle famous was its 396 ci Mark IV "porcupine" big block engine which used big rectangular port heads, a Holley 4-barrel on an aluminum intake, big valves, and a highlift "solid lifter" hydraulic cam with 11.0:1 compression. It was called the L37.
This one, like all Z16 Chevelles, is equipped with a Muncie M-20 4-speed manual transmission and comes well-optioned with bucket seats and a console. It has a 160 mph speedometer and 6,000 rpm tach mounted on the padded dash. They came loaded with the best of components including the biggest brakes available in a Chevrolet that year..
For more details on this truly rare 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS Z16 be sure to click through to the long version of this feature story on our Cars On Line blog site. There you'll find more statistics and details on how to identify a real deal Z16, one of the top ten muscle cars of all time.

When we went to post our DEAL of the DAY on the front page of our site yesterday we found out that this 1939 Mercury 99A Coupe had already been marked sold. James from Edmond, Oklahoma SOLD it in less than a week. Newsletter readers may remember it was featured as a DEAL of the DAY preview in last week's newsletter. The car was mostly original with a 239 ci Flathead 8. The seller said it was a great driver and dependable fun. Now James knows why we always say: "You can advertise anywhere ... but you can sell on Cars On Line." Click this link to see what else SOLD this week on the Cars On Line website.

Legendary Motorcar Company, a member of the Cars On Line Dealer Program, has come up with the ultimate collector car offering of the week. They are listing two real deal Shelby Cobras for sale. The first is this black 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra, one of only 15 produced in black from the factory by Shelby American. Legendary Motorcar Comapny tells us it is also one of only 160 427 Street Cobras built.
To complement the rare 427 Cobra, Legendary also has a red 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra for sale. They describe it as a fresh restoration, fully documented with full history of ownership. In their description they note that the drivetrain is all original. That is rare for a race car of this vintage.
It was a chilly January for U.S. light vehicle sales as several automakers reported declines for the month. A total of 1.1 million cars and trucks rolled off dealership lots, putting overall sales down 1.7 percent compared to January of last year. The numbers have been released by WardsAuto.com. Their data center provides the most trusted numbers for new car sales.
General Motors, the nation’s largest car manufacturer, said its total sales fell 3.9 percent to 195,827 cars and trucks. Meanwhile Ford, the second largest U.S. automaker, reported its sales slipped 0.6 percent to 167,020 vehicles. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) finished the month with a drop in sales as well, reporting its U.S. sales were down 11.2 percent to 151,126 cars and trucks.
The big Japanese automakers posted mixed results for the month. Toyota, the largest Japanese car manufacturer, said it sold 143,048 cars and trucks last month, a surprising 11.3 percent drop from the same month in 2016. Meanwhile Honda’s overall sales jumped 5.9 percent from January 2016 results.
According to The New York Times, some analysts cautioned against reading too much into January’s results. However most analysts expect car sales to plateau or decline over the next several years.

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted in the DEAL of the DAY feature on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
A Canadian seller just listed this 1973 Corvette 454 Convertible for sale at a great price. We had to tell you about it here. He says it is a "factory matching numbers big block 454, with automatic Turbo 400 transmission. I bought this car from the second owner, who had owned it for 23 years. He says the car is in very good driving condition, engine runs very well and transmission shifts like it should. It's not a show car but the seller says it looks very good for its age. It has no power options; no power steering, no power brakes. But it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $16,900.
The 1936 Ford Tudor Humpback Sedan has always been a very popular body style. Collectors especially seem to be enamored of the beautiful Ford styling. This one is very original with th flathead V8, 3-speed manual transmission, dual tail lights, wide whitewall tires; although it does have a 12V conversion with alternator. It is being offered for sale by Classic & Collectible Cars of Las Vegas. They say it is a clean older restoration which runs and drives well. This interesting original Ford will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday because the asking price is only $14,995.
All Oldsmobile collectors know that the 1955 Oldsmobie 2-Door Post is a sedan version of the classic Oldsmobile. By 1955 Oldsmobile's styling was a perfect match for America's forward looking optimism. Classic Auto Showplace of Troy, Michigan has this smart lookiing example for sale this week. They are sayingk this car is mechanically well sorted and has been owned by an appreciative collector. Spent its early life in California and Arizona. It was refinished in its original colors, Bronze metallic and Polar white. It is showing 47k miles currently. The best part is that it is very affordable. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday because the asking price is $18,500.
Classic American station wagons continue to be a hot trend in the collector car market. Here is one of the alltime favorites with a family nostalgia theme. It is a 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser Wagon being offered for sale by a collector from Belden, Mississippi. It comes with a 455 ci big block engine with plenty of power. Naturally it has power windows, brakes, and steering; automatic transmission, factory air and original factory AM/FM radio. Note the 442 hood and steering wheel and tic-toc factory tachometer, positraction rearend. That's why it will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price in the ad is $11,000.
From California comes a very sharp looking 1938 Dodge Stepside Pickup, very rare and hard to find in this market. They say it is completely stock. The styling on this early stepside is so great. Note the Inline 6 cylinder motor, 3-speed manual transmission, side-mount spare, stock wheels and hubcaps with wide whitewall tires. Nice combination and colors. Check out the interior trim and upholstry. Wow! Sure looks nice. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy. But hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The price is $18,950.
Here's one that might be sold before we can get it into the DEAL of the DAY feature this week. Masterpiece Vintage Cars of Whiteland, Indiana have this 1963 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible for sale. Before the Mustang, Ford's little Falcon sports cars were a threat to Chevy's Nova. Masterpiece says they think the low miles are original. It comes with a 170 ci inline 6 cylinder engine. It is Rangoon red with a white convertible top and a 2-speed Fordomatic. Click here to view a walk-around video. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The price is only $11,900.
The Jaguar XKR sports car was meant to be the rebirth of the legendary XKE That's why it is now so interesting to see the price points on these cars trending downward. This 2002 Jaguar XKR coupe is being offered for sale for $15,900 by its private seller from Shawnee, Oklahoma. That's why it will be our DEAL of the DAY in the coming week. Consider that the original price on this car when new was over $96,000. The with only 61k miles. He describes it as being, "A dream to drive and own. Hard to find 2 tone fade factory paint and Apollo 19-inch wheels." He says he is the third owner. "Everything works as it should."
