Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Ronald Reagan all owned one. It was the chique automobile to have if you were a celebrity back in the 1950s. The Dual-Gia Convertible, such as the one you see here, provides one of the mosting interesting chapters in American automotive history.
You might say that Eugene Casaroll, an American businessman and industrialist, was smitten with the Virgil Exner designed Chrysler concept car called the Dodge Firebomb. He saw it at a new car show in 1955. When Chrysler decided not to produce the prototype, Casaroll bought the rights to the concept, and, along with designer Paul Farago, began to scale it for production. The Dual-Ghia was hand molded and crafted by Carrozzeria-Ghia in Turin, Italy built on a Dodge D-500 chassis. It took 200 man hours to produce each car and only about a dozen could be produced per month. Production began in 1956 and ended in 1958.
The 1958 Dual-Ghia Convertible pictured here was one of the very last ones built. It has just been listed for sale by Daniel Schmitt & Co of St Louis, Missouri. It is one of only 30 known to exist and is without question one of the best examples available on the market today. In 2010, this Dual-Ghia convertible was given a special award at the Pebble Beach Concours. Documentation on the car includes paperwork from the Pebble Beach Concours, copies of the Dual-Ghia factory paperwork, and concours photos from the many events to which it has been invited. Suffice it to say that this is an investment grade collector car which will grace any museum or high end collection.
Power for the Dual-Ghias came from the Dodge Red Ram Hemi V8. There was a 260 horsepower upgrade package optional. It was mated to a Torqueflite 2-speed automatic transmission. They say performance was effortless.
For more on the history of the Dual-Ghias and their impact on the American automotive industry, follow this link to the Cars On Line blogsite. There you will find a video done by Daniel Schmitt & Co about this unique marque.

A 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer will go down in history as the 2017 Pebble Beach Best of Show. It won the honor at the exciting 2017 Pebble Beach Concours D' Elegance on August 20, 2017. According to many car collectors, this is the highest award given in the collector car hobby. The antique motorcar is owned by Bruce R. McCaw of Bellevue, Washington. Just a week prior, McCaw’s S Barker Tourer emerged from the restoration shop of Steve Babinsky in Lebanon, New Jersey. A week later it was judged the Best of Show in America's most prestigious judging. The car retains its original Marchal lighting equipment and chrome plated wheels; complemented by lowcut doors and unusual torpedo style running boards.

RM-Sotheby's, one of the world's most prestigious auction houses, had an outstanding sale during Monterey Week, August 18-19, 2017. On Friday evening a 1956 Aston Martin DBR1, chassis No. 1, sold for $22,550,000. It was a world record, the highest price ever paid for an Aston Martin, or any other British two-seater sports car. It is the car that won the Nurburgring 1000 three times, in 1957, 1958 and 1959. It helped Aston Martin rest the world title away from Ferrari in 1959. Such legendary racers as Carroll Shelby, Jack Brabham, Roy Salvadori and Sir Stirling Moss drove the Aston Martins that year. During an extended bidding frenzy, a Platinum Award-winning 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta sold for $8,305,000. A 1959 Aston Martin DB4GT Prototype also fetched $6,765,000 to set a new record.
This was RM-Sotheby's most successful sale to date. The total sales for the weekend were just under $133 million with 88 percent of the cars selling during the two-day event. They recorded 32 vehicles selling for $1 million or more.
We hope you were able to join us for our coverage of the Upper Mississippi Valley Studebaker Drivers Club Zone Meet last weekend in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Although this was a small show, it was very interesting to meet owners who were so knowlegeable and passionate about their Studebakers. We captured many photos of the Studebakers present at the show. Follow this link to review our coverage.
The photos and videos we did at the show were very popular with our newsletter readers. Our thanks go out to the Wisconsin Region Studebaker Drivers Club for their hospitality in hosting such a successful event.
Maybe the summer is gone, but you still have a chance to attend a few car shows before you have to put Betsy away for the winter. Be sure to check the Cars On Line Car Show Calendar to find shows like this in your area during September.
When a Corvette enthusiast from New Berlin, Wisconsin listed his 1965 Corvette Convertible for sale in the Cars On Line Corvette Section he was surprised to find out the kind of pull we have among Corvette collectors.
"Your website provided an effective wide viewing platform for potential buyers. The 1965 Corvette Convertible SOLD in about 3 weeks!" It was no surprise here that the Nassau blue roadster had a lot of potential buyers. It had been restored in 1990 and now just needed paint. The price was right for a quick sale.
Now the seller knows why we always say, "You can advertise anywhere ... but you can sell on Cars On Line." To view more vehicles SOLD thru Cars On Line this week, follow this link to the SOLD section below.

There has always been a "cult" following of hobbyists who loved taking their old Broncos, Blazers and Jeeps off-roading. But recently this has become the hot new trend in the collectorl car market. It is widely followed by Baby Boomers and Gen-X'ers alike. This week, 4-Wheel Classics, a classic car dealer out of Holland, Michigan, put their inventory online in Cars-On-Line's Sport Utility Section. As an example, they just listed this 1979 International Scout II for sale. They say it is an Arizona car they pulled out of the dry Southwestern climate. This one is clean. In driver class condition it is priced at $24,900. They say the rebuilt 345 V8 runs excellent. Look at the photos of the undercarriage. That's what a dry Arizona driver looks like.
Be sure to look for 4-Wheel Classics' new listings below among this week's huge selection of Off-Road & 4X4s listings. They have about twenty choice classic sport utility vehicles, most for under $20,000. Now that's what I'm talkin' about.

A 1966 Batmobile reproduced by noted movie car builder Jay Orhrberg of Hollywood Cars, has been consigned to the Fall Auburn Auction. It is an all-steel car with a 1959 Lincoln chassis and V8 motor. It was built as a promo car. It was later purchased by a German collector and spent some of its life outside the U.S. in collections and museums. They say it is as highly detailed as the original TV car built by George Barris. It will be Lot # 5069 on Saturday. To promote the TV show, many replicas were commissioned to travel all over the country to be shown at local events. There is no accurate count on how many Batmobiles have been built; but this car is said to be the 6th produced and built by Jay Orhrberg Hollywood Cars.

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be featured in the DEAL of the DAY section on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
Considered to be a life long Texas car, this 1968 Pontiac GTO was purchased in Arlington, Texas back in the day. According to North Shore Classics in Mundelein, Illinois, the car was brought to Ohio where they acquired it through a friend. They say it is a real 242 VIN GTO. See dozens of photos in the ad which verify it is a driver class car. They describe it as an upper end driver quality car which interprets to a Class No Three condition car. They note that it could be driven as is or taken to another level with a full restoration. The vacuum headlight doors will need a retro conversion kit. For the right buyer this one is our featured DEAL of the DAY. The asking price is $23,900, below price guide estimates.
If you've always wanted to own a 1956 Ford Thunderbird this may be the way to get into one at an affordable price. The Jensen Dealerships group out of Sioux City, Iowa are offering this one. They say it is a very solid car which has been converted to the dependable Ford 302 performance motor mated to an automatic transmission. It features bright red paint with a white top. In addition you can see in the photos that it has wire wheels and a Continental kit. They say it also has working cold air conditioning. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday with an asking price of $22,900.
You may have read our story (above) on the Studebaker Drivers Club Zone Meet in Wisonsin last weekend. Likely as not you are in the mood to get involved with a classic Studebaker. If so, this 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk may be your Huckleberry. It is being offered for sale by Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. They say it has a nice running 289 ci V8 engine with a 2-barrel carburetor and automatic transmission with column shift. The red/black exterior paint combination is appealing as eye candy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday because this one is affordably priced at $16,900. (In every DEAL of the DAY listing, COL suggests each buyer should have the car inspected before purchase. Review the COL Inspection Service at this link.)
Read the description on this 1929 Pontiac 3-Window Coupe offered for sale by a private seller from Mesquite, Texas. The seller says it has great deep shine paint and still purrs along the road. It has the three-speed transmission. He says it was a museum display for a while. And "yes it does have the indian head radiator cap!!" he tells us. Although he says it is just not his style he says he took it in on trade because of its obvious value. This is the right car for someone who treasures a rare, original Pontiac. Call to find out more. It will be our DEAL of the DAY in the next week. You can own it for $14,500.
Although it is not an SS, were are impressed with the listing of a 1971 Chevy El Camino from Unique Specialty & Classics in Mankato, Minnesota. They don't include a description in their ad, but you can get a lot of information out of the video ad they placed on this ad page. Be sure to watch the video at this link. It has a 350 V8 sbc, optioned with power steering, power brakes and factory air conditioning. It is a driver class car, but Unique tells us it is ice and solid. It looks like an SS and has that high performance "personality." It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with a $15,900 price tag.
Even though there were a lot of Chevelles produced in 1970, they remain one of the most popular sports cars of the muscle car era. Here is a 1970 Chevelle Malibu Convertible listed by a private seller from West Orange, New Jersey. He describes it as a very nice driver which could be an excellent candidate for a restoration, upgrade to an SS recreation or you could just drive it the way it is. He says the power top works. "I have the original owners manual, Protecto plate, as well as other dealer paperwork," he says. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later in the week. His asking price is $15,000.
This is one of the off-road 4X4 vehicles from 4-Wheel Classics of Holland, Michigan mentioned in the story above. It is a 1970 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, a popular sport utility for a cult of Landcruiser collectors. These vehciles always sell quickly in our listings. But rarely do we see them in this price range. They say it "spent the majority of its life in Arizona before going to Oregon where we purchased from the second owner." They tell us it is in excellent condition with one repaint. The engine was replaced in the 70's with a GM 250 Straight Six and "it runs like a top," they add. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. 4-Wheel Classics has it listed at $18,900.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
