In 1968 the Hamtramck, Michigan Dodge plant built 50 special edition Plymouth Hemi Cudas that were coded B029. People had begun using a shortened form of the word Barracuda as a common slang term. But in '68 it was adopted by the factory for its high performance Barracuda brand. Thus the name Cuda was christened by the factory and became part of the American lexicon. These first Hemi Cudas were lightweight Super Stock cars, destined for race tracks and were sold on a bill of sale. No title was created for the cars because they were never meant to be driven on the street. The steel bodies were stock but had seam sealer, sound deadening and insulation removed. The cars were finished in a grey primer with front panels made of fiberglass painted in black. Functional air scoops were included with the hoods.

All interiors were very basic. Finished in a standard black upholstery, the heater and radio were deleted from the build. The front seats were replaced by lightweight van seats. Rear seats were removed. Chemcor side windows were used instead of glass. There were no window regulators in either the front or back doors, and no exterior side mirrors. A small 135-amp battery could be 1968 Plymouth Hemi Cuda B029found in the trunk. The 426 HEMI engine was mated to an A833 standard tranmission case with modified Super Stock internals. A Hurst Competition Plus floor shifter was used. It could run mid-10's in the quarter-mile right out of the wrapper.

Today, we have one of the legendary Super Stock cars in our Mopar Muscle Car Section. It is a factory 1968 Hemi Cuda B029 being advertised for sale by Carman Customs in Freeland, Michigan. This car was first raced by its original owner Rich Thomas from St. Louis, Missouri as a Super Stock car. Then it was raced out of Nebraska by second owner Reuben Pribyl in the Pro Stock class.

The way you see it here in the photographs is the way it looks today and the way it looked on the last day it ran in Pro Stock class. It is being sold by Carman Customs in Freeland, Michigan. They tell us that it is one of the last unrestored B029 Cudas that you will find. According to the ad copy it has the correct seats, tach, distributor, light weight hood, doors and fenders. They say the car is seen here exactly as it was last raced, including the engine, transmission, paint, wheels and tires. This is new found treasure for a special race car collector.

CARS ON LINE NEWS ...

The last two weeks have been awesome for collector car sales. It's as though the Spring Car Market is happening already ... very early to be seeing so many cars selling. Check out what has been selling by looking at the SOLD thru CARS ON LINE feature below. Across the board a diverse cross section of cars are selling. A full 15 percent of the cars sold through our site last week were classic 1950's cars. Just under nine percent were Mopar muscle cars, and 8.5 percent were Pontiac muscle cars (half of those were GTOs.) Camaros made up 6.8 percent of our private sales last week. I was surprised to see so many classic Jaguars in the mix. This has been an encouraging year for collectors. I think we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. (Remember, our SOLD thru CARS ON LINE Feature only includes private Run Till Sold ads. We do not have complete numbers on our Dealer Network sales.)

DEAL OF THE DAY

PREVIEW

In the popular DEAL of the DAY preview we give you first shot at all the cars that will be featured in the DEAL of the DAY "rear view mirror" seen daily on the Cars On Line home page. Our fans wait eagerly each day to see which bargains will be highlighted. But often these cars sell right here in the newsletter before they have a chance to be viewed on the front page. If you aren't a newsletter subscriber you'll never know what you're missing. Newsletter readers are able to preview the best bargains on our website right here in the DEAL of the DAY feature. You'll always see it here first.

A custom car fan from Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania just listed his 1969 Camaro Z/28 Pro Street, and this is a deal you don't want to miss. This seems to be one of those situations where the seller knows this is a good deal, but he just wants to move it quickly. He's willing to let 1969 Camaro Z/28 RS Pro Streetsomeone have it for below the average value. He says it has a ZZ502/502, 400 Turbo automatic transmission with manual reverse valve, Cheetah shifter and linelock and a 3500 torque converter. The 12-bolt rear end has 456 gears and is Posi. The car is also equipped with 4-wheel power disc brakes, ladder bar, Koni coilovers, Ceramic coated Hooker comp headers, 3.5" complete exhaust and 6-point cage. The seller says it was a race car much of its life, but he converted it back over for street use. It will be our DEAL of the DAY for Saturday. The asking price is only $18,500. Wow! You'll have to hurry on this one. I can't imagine this lasting the weekend at that price.

Here's something you should get a kick out of. Brandon Classics, the collector car dealer that operates out of their museum and antique mall complex in Griffith, Georgia, is offering a unique 1950 Ford Shorty Custom for sale. The body has been shortened, narrowed and the roof cut to 1950 Ford Custom Shortyconvert it as a roadster. All the original panels were custom fitted, according to their description of the car. The purpose was to make it one of the most unique custom roadsters that you would ever lay eyes on. With plenty of power from the small block Chevy V-8 engine, it has been nicknamed the Eight Ball. The exterior paint is Pearl white with custom blue flames complemented by a 2-tone blue and white interior. If you like to watch heads turn in amazement just wait till you drive this Shorty Ford classic. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is only $11,900.

A significant amount of quality custom work was invested in this 1934 Plymouth Coupe listed by a private seller from Grosse Point, Michigan. From the photos and the description you 1934 Plymouth Cpewould have to venture a guess that the original restoration is a little ripe and may need some attention. But what a great car to get started on. A lot of recent work has already been done, according to the ad copy. The seller says it has anew engine, paint and bodywork. He cites numerous upgrades to mechanical, interior and body. It has a rumble seat. You'll have to call to see if there are any remaining issues with the car. But the way it looks in the photos this would be a lot of car for the money. It's priced below what a starter car would cost. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price is only $26,000. Hurry!

Don't forget! Have these cars inspected before you buy. One man's great opportunity is another man's nightmare. You have to know if the car is right for you. See the Cars On Line Inspection Service at http://www.cars-on-line.com/insp-1stpg.html

For a short stint at the end of the '50s, Ford decided to enter its Thunderbird into NASCAR competition. It was in that period that you could buy a Thunderbird and get it with some racing 1960 Ford Thunderbirdequipment from the factory. Here is a 1960 Ford Thunderbird 2-Dr Hardtop which came with the 352 Police Interceptor motor and a rare NASCAR style 3-speed transmission. The seller, from San Diego, California, says only a handful of cars were produced with the NASCAR 3-speed. The 3-speed had the overdrive feature. He says it has solid California body and original floors. He says the transmission shifts like butter, and that the car is road worthy. You can tell from the photos that it is a No. 3 condition driver. The seller indicates it will need paint and some chrome replaced. But it will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price is only $8,495.

Although the seller could have provided better photos, you can kind of make out what we have here. It is a 1969 Ford Bronco from Grayson, Kentucky. It would probably be worth taking a 1969 Ford Broncolook at. The seller says it is a stock original truck, and remains rust-free. He says it has undergone a frame-off restoration with all the original sheet metal still there. He says it now has an incorrect top but that the full top and rear seat are available to include in the sale. The key factor here might be that the seller says it only has 42k miles. It has a Ford 302 and a 3-speed transmission. The seller does not say whether they are original to the car, so you should ask. But this is clearly a truck that would be worth an inspection. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The seller is only asking $13,500. A stock original Bronco might have some investment value going forward. But don't buy it for that reason. Buy it because you want to have some fun with it.

1959 Edsel RangerIn the anals of history, the Edsel, made by Ford Motor Co, is actually more popular today as a collector car than it was as a new car back in the day. Here is a 1959 Edsel Ranger, the low end car in the Edsel lineup. The seller says it has new paint, a new interior and a rebuilt 292 V8 engine. The seller from Scottsbluff, Nebraska says it runs and drives great, and has new brakes. If you want something truly rare and unusual to drive this is your car. An Edsel is always a big draw at car shows. And the price won't be prohibitive. That's why we have it in our DEAL of the DAY feature. The seller's asking price is only $8,500.

Don't forget! Have these cars inspected before you buy. One man's great opportunity is another man's nightmare. You have to know if the car is right for you. See the Cars On Line Inspection Service at http://www.cars-on-line.com/insp-1stpg.html

Some cars just always sell, and sell quickly. One of the cars that is always popular on our pages 1971 Porsche 914is a 1971 Porsche 914 with air conditioning. The seller, from Palm City, Florida, says you must see this one to believe it is as nice as it is. He says there is "zero rust" and that it is all original with a mint interior. He said the car was in storage for 20 years. Now that they have gotten it out of storage and road worthy again, he says it is a nice running original car. This one has original fuel injection and comes with full documentation. The seller says it was repainted once just before going into storage. You will see it in our DEAL of the DAY feature this week. The asking price is $12,500.

Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
