Here we are in not-so-sunny Arizona this week as the 39th Annual Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale is just heating up. Hope you've been able to read some of our coverage of the auction activity. We've been filing several reports each day. So while you watch the auction on SPEED TV, you can get the inside info on the cars and condition. No where in the world can you see this many cars selling in one place. That's the reason we are so interested in the Barrett-Jackson. We use it as a barometer to measure the collector car market. Will prices be going up or going down? The Barrett-Jackson sets the pace for the collector car market for the coming year. Our unbiased coverage is followed by collectors who want to know "the rest of the story." Read more on this below.

Today in the Cars On Line Daily Update newsletter you'll see a great selection of classic American cars for sale; many Mopar muscle cars, including an original Hemi Challenger; a sweet assortment of street rods and customs; and an interesting selection of late model sports cars.

Holy Cow! Look at all the cars we've SOLD this week on the Cars On Line website. See the SOLD Feature below. This is outstanding.

BARRETT-JACKSON DAILY UPDATES
Scottsdale, AZ -- January 22, 2009
Well, we survived a "monsoon," flash flood alerts and tornado warnings here in the Phoenix area yesterday. As we filed our reports in the press tent many of us looked up occasionally wondering whether that tent structure was gonna' blow apart in the 50 mile-an-hour winds. About two-thirds of the way through the auction they announced that people would be safer staying in the main auction tent than venturing outside. They were right. The TV news called them rain storms. I'd call those "squalls."

But through it all the auction went on and undaunted buyers paid big money for historic collector cars. Late in the sale a 1967 Chevy Nova 2-Dr Coupe drew the highest bid of the auction so far. The winning bid was $137,000. This was a surprising sale in that generally Novas have not drawn that kind of money. Other than the fact that it was an original triple black car, there was little to indicate that this car would be so appreciated. It came with an original Protect-o-plate and books. The owner indicated that this car was restored to original with the original parts in tact. So the accuracy of the restoration was what was so striking about the car.

Click here to follow our coverage of the Barrett-Jackson Auction. We will be updating this page twice a day with our analysis of what is happening behind the scenes at the auction. You may want to add this page to your favorites.

Why should you read our analysis? Well, yesterday the SPEED TV announcers could not figure out why all the big block Corvettes were selling at such low prices. Right away it was obvious to us the reason was that all the big blocks that went through the auction yesterday were 427/390 hp cars. The prices for these cars were right on the money. The 390 horsepower cars are not as desirable as the 427/425 hp and 427/435 hp cars. Those cars that will go through on Saturday, and we will see if they break the $100,000 mark. We think they will.

For your inspection is the 1940 Ford Coupe that won the 1st Place award at the 1986 Detroit Autorama. Vanguard Auto Sales in Farmington, Michigan says it is an all steel custom, and that it was featured in Street Rodder Magazine in '86.

The '41 Willys Coupe body style is one of the favorites of street rod custom builders. This 1941 Willys Coupe demonstrates why. The dropped front look is exaggerated to create a menacing stance. The Delaware car has a 383/500 hp motor.

Almost elegant with its pearled paint, a 1940 Ford Coupe from Dawsonville, Georgia has nice paint and interior, according to the seller. They say it is an all steel car with a Mustang II front end.

Nostalgia drag racing has a champion ever since Car Craft Magazine honored this 1950 Oldsmobile 88 Coupe with a feature article. Now offered for sale by its Oregon owner, this car is as much for "go" as it is "show".

They say it has a professionally built 526 modern Hemi engine tuned to 750 horsepower, and that there is $30,000 in the engine alone.

DEAL OF THE DAY
Newsletter readers know that we feature the best bargains on our website right here in the DEAL of the DAY preview. In this DEAL of the DAY section of our newsletter we give readers first chance at the bargain priced quality cars on our website. Then during the coming week you'll see these cars on our home page in the DEAL of the DAY graphic that looks like a "rear view mirror."

If you watched the Barrett-Jackson Auction this week you may be in despair that you won't be able to afford the muscle car of your choice. But fear not. Here is a 1967 Chevelle SS 396 offered for sale by a collector from Texas City, Florida. He says it is a real 138 VIN, originally a 396/325hp car with factory air conditioning, M-20 4-speed with black bucket seat interior, and Mountain Green exterior with black vinyl top. However, it currently has a '69 396 with closed chamber 215 heads, and non-numbers matching rebuilt '67 M-20, and a non-numbers matching rebuilt 12-bolt rear end with 3.42 gears. It still has air conditioning but with a Sanden compressor. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday with an asking price of $25,000.

Sometimes you just get lucky, and this is your lucky day. A 1946 Ford 2-Dr Super Deluxe was listed from Bristol, Tennessee. The seller says something has to go so he's selling this one. He certifies that this is a perfect car with no rust anywhere, and that it has just 39,000 orignal miles! He says the new rubber parts replaced inlclude, all hoses, brake lines, fuel lines, plus water pump and fuel pump. He says he has Coker ww tires with less than 300 miles on them! He calls it a Ford V8 that is all original and can be driven anywhere. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday ... because this is a lotta car for $14,500. Hurry!

A 1971 Pontiac Firebird Formula has been listed out of Overland Park, Kansas at a very low price ... one might consider it pocket change. The seller says he inherited the car from his father and has all the original dealer paperwork. He says the original 350 Pontiac engine was recently rebuilt and aftermarket intake manifod and a Holley 700 double pumper were added, but the original 2-barrel intake and carburetor are available. Also updated: a new HEI ignition was installed for dependability (the original points/condenser distributor was also retained). All new bolt-on accessories such as alternator, water pump and fuel pump were replaced with new rebuilt components. He says the air conditioning system was replaced and works perfectly. It looks as though it is No. 3 driver quality by the photos (remember, we have not inspected this car yet), so we will make it our DEAL of the DAY. The asking price is very reasonable ... you don't see them priced this low that often ... at $10,000.

Don't forget! Have these cars inspected before you buy. One man's great opportunity is another man's nightmare. You have to know if the car is right for you. See the Cars On Line Inspection Service at http://www.cars-on-line.com/insp-1stpg.html

Here's one that is extremely interesting for Pontiac collectors. A 1960 Pontiac Catalina 2-Dr Hardtop was listed by a classic car dealer from Oldcastle, Ontario, Canada. Now note that he says the numbers match and that the car was originally from California. The car still wears the original paint, and has original interior and driveline, according to the description. Paint code: NR- Mahogany with Palomino Beige roof. Vin. # 160S5460. They call it a "great driver quality car," and record the odometer at 61,185 miles. This is cheap even for a No. 3 condition car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week for a price of $11,900.

A 1973 Plymouth Duster was listed by a collector from Tampa, Florida this past week. He told us this is an especially nice ride. We'll only find out what that means if we inspect it. But he says it is all original and with only 67,000 miles! The 2-door green coupe is said to have original paint and seat covers. He was insistant the it runs great! This is a slant six engine with manual transmission, a three-on-a-tree. The transmission has received a recent resynchronization. All service records for the past four years are available to the buyer. He says most major components were updated. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with an asking price of $7,800.

Remember, we don't know the condition class of this car. Study the photos with a critical eye. But we do know that this car is very desirable and has collector value. It is a
1963 Mercury Comet Convertible out of Encinitas, California. In the words of the seller, it is a "very rare, very straight example of a 1963 V8 260 Mercury Comet Convertible. Original 260 V8, starts 1st time, every time, no smoke, no leaks. Odometer shows 78xxx miles. Original Merc-o-Matic 2-speed tranny. Runs great, shifts smooth, no leaks." He says all the gauges work, as do the original AM radio, fan and interior lights. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week because the asking price is $9,900. Hurry! And I do mean "Hu-r-r-r-r-r-r-e-e-e-e-e!" This won't last long.

Don't forget! Have these cars inspected before you buy. One man's great opportunity is another man's nightmare. You have to know if the car is right for you. See the Cars On Line Inspection Service at http://www.cars-on-line.com/insp-1stpg.html

I wouldn't be surprised if this one goes to Australia. The boys down under really love their classic Ford Mavericks. From Westminster, Massachusetts comes a very interesting high performance model 1972 Ford Maverick Grabber which is described as a restored vehicle. The seller says it is one of the nicest you will find, and also says it has beautiful paint and a nice straight body. He says it has undergone an extensive rotisserie style restoration with pretty much everything new or rebuilt. He says it has a 351W engine, 4-speed transmission, Ford 9" rear end with spooled 410 gears. That's what makes it the perfect DEAL of the DAY, because the asking price is only $13,500.

Often there are more cars than we can feature on our front page every week. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY feature. Remember, you saw them here first:
