If you were watching the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Las Vegas
this past weekend you're probably thinking that classic customs,
pro touring cars and resto mods are the hottest thing going in
today's collector market. And you'd be right. As always, we've
got a good selection of all of them here in today's Cars On Line Daily
Update newsletter.
For a look at what's selling in the real world check the SOLDs Feature below. Classic '50s
cars are almost as hot as muscle cars in today's market. Customs
and street rods are significantly in demand as well.
RESULTS FROM THE BARRETT-JACKSON
While the collector car market
is by no means in a runaway upward spiral, I think we can draw
some positive conclusions about the Barrett-Jackson Auction in
Las Vegas last weekend. There were some encouraging signs of
strength in the prices that were
bid. For instance, you see here a black 1968
Shelby GT350 Convertible, one of only
404 such cars produced by Ford in 1968. It should be pointed
out that this is a rotisserie restoration done on an original
car with documentation to include a Marti Report, build sheets,
buck tag and numbers matching engine and transmission. The winning
bid on this car was $134,200. It was the most expensive original
Shelby car sold last weekend at the auction. A 1967 Shelby GT350
Fastback which was said to be a very high quality restoration
of an original K code GT went for $132,000.
The high price paid for a car was $440,000,
which is the amount bid for this Princess blue 1965
Shelby Cobra CSX2568. They say it has
undergone a 2-year concourse restoration and comes heavily documented
with low miles. For
a list of the Top Ten cars sold according to highest bids click
this link.
There were three '69 Camaro Z/28s that
sold and the going price was under $60,000. That would seem to
show weakness in the pricing of America's favorite muscle car.
However a 1969 Camaro Z/28 RS was bid up to $110,000 and a 1969
Camaro Z/28 with a DZ302, Crossram intake and a 4-speed went
for $87,400. Two 1970 Chevelle SS 396 original big blocks were
in the sale. Both went for $55,000. The troubling thing is that
one of them was an L78 car. Go figure. Only one 1970 Plymouth
Cuda 440 car was offered and it went for $81,400. A 1967 Corvette
427/435 Convertible sold for $165,000, but what was important
about that sale is that the car had belonged to actor Bruce Willis.
On a brighter note, a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-Door Hardtop was
sold for $132,000. It was a Sierra Gold automatic with a 283
and dual quads. That is big money for a hardtop.
This is only the second year that the
Barrett-Jackson has held an auction in Las Vegas. The glitz and
glitter of the Barrett-Jackson always makes for an interesting
TV event. And the Jackson family never fails to lure the top
buyers from all over the world. Newsletter readers know that
we like to use it as a barometer for what is happening in the
collector car market. They always have a wide variety of popular
collector cars giving us plenty of cars to analyze statistically.
Here is a link
to the page on the Barrett-Jackson website where you can search
for cars from the Las Vegas sale. You
can for instance type in 1970 Chevelle SS and see what cars were
in the sale. Then click on the lot number and you'll see details
on the car and the price for which it sold.
NASCAR COLLECTOR TRUCK
NASCAR collectors will be thrilled
at the chance to own a piece of racing history. Here is the 2004
Ford F150 Custom which was used
as NASCAR's official truck for that year. It was built and modified
by Granatelli Motorsports of Oxnard, California. They dubbed
it "The Official Truck of NASCAR." It was used as the
pace truck for the Homestead Truck Race in 2004 in Homestead,
Florida. It has also been on display at the 2005 SEMA show. Custom
Classics of Island Lake, Illinois has offered it for sale in
the Cars On Line Truck
Section. They tell us that there are
only 945 miles on the truck.
LOW MILES CARS
Did you know that the 1979
Pontiac Trans Am 10th Anniversary Edition (shown above left)
was also used as the NASCAR Daytona 500 Pace car for that year?
Here is a wonderfully preserved Pace Car special edition that
only has 10k miles, according to Classic Car Studio in
Missouri. Another reknown Missouri classic car dealer, Dan
Schmitt & Co out of St Louis, has posted a 1970
Shelby GT350 (shown above center) for sale. They say this
car has only 24,300 original miles. And a very interesting low
miles car is this 1987
Buick GNX (shown above right) offered for sale by Happy
Days Dream Cars in Warrensburg, Missouri. They say only 547
were built in '87. Happy Days says this one has had only 2 owners
and currently the odometer reads 14,290 miles, and that the miles
are documented.
Don't miss more low miles cars for sale today in the New
Listings, including these: You'll find hundreds more amazing, pampered treasures
in our Low
Miles Section which is devoted solely to collector cars that
have had loving care and light use.
PROJECT CARS
There is a 1969
Mach 1 Mustang for sale in our Project
Car Section today that we wanted to point out to our newsletter
readers. It was
listed by Benza Motors in Milford, Ohio, one of the premier
classic car dealers in the country who specialize in classic
Mustang muscle cars. They say this is an actual R code car with
the 428 CJ engine. According to their Marti Report this car is
a one of one. They have photos in their ad of the bad areas.
This came originally with a very desirable color combination,
Acapulco blue with a black interior.
And there's more:
In looking for a project car to restore,
make sure you watch our New
Listings page for daily updates. Or
you can find hundreds of project cars for sale now in the Cars

DEAL OF THE DAY
It is a sign of the times. Prices
continue to drop on some very nice collector cars. Newsletter
readers know that we feature the best ones here in the DEAL of the DAY
preview. In this DEAL of the
DAY section of our newsletter
we give readers first chance at the best deals among the fresh
ads on our website. Then during the coming week you'll see these
cars featured on the home page of our website in the DEAL of the DAY
graphic that looks like a "rear view mirror."
Sometimes you just get lucky. That's the way we feel about
our first DEAL of the DAY
this week which will hit our front page on Saturday. It is a
1970 Ford Torino
Cobra with the legendary 429CJ
engine offered for sale from San Antonio, Texas. The seller says
it is a "J code" ram air with an older repaint in the
original color, Grabber Green. He says it has the correct Cobra
Jet block, original heads, intake and carburetor. He
says the motor is upgraded internally with solid cam, new double
roller chain and more. Furthermore, he says it has a built C6
transmission with high stall torque converter. The car is documented
with a build sheet, Marti report of which you should ask to see
the copies. What a find for this price. It will be our
DEAL of the DAY on Saturday
with an asking price of just $19,950. Even in this down market
you don't expect to see a desirable muscle car for under $20,000!
Remember last week when we had a 1951
Kaiser Special for sale right here in the Cars On Line Daily
Update newsletter as a DEAL of the DAY
candidate to be published on our main page on Monday? Well, we
believe a knowledgable newsletter reader saw it published here
first and bought it before we could even get it on the front
page DEAL of the DAY promotion.
It was marked SOLD before we could even get the promotion on
the front page. Well, today the same Ft. Lauderdale
collector has offered an even more important Kaiser for sale.
Here is a 1953
Kaiser Manhattan. He says the car has been owned by the same
family since 1960 and is most likely the nicest, most original
example in existence. "With only 87,994 original miles,
the car is in impeccable condition," he writes in his ad
copy. Will this one sell before it has a chance to become a DEAL of the DAY?
Hurry! It is priced at just $14,750.
If you are an avid newsletter reader you may remember that
we have advertised this 1941
Ford Street Rod before. Today it is being offered by a collector
from Kerrville, Texas. He says it is somewhat
of a project. At this point he says all components are new or
newly rebuilt. By his estimation this car is about 95 percent
done. The drive train has a 305 modified Chevy engine, 200r4
tranny, 3:31 posi Jag rear end, Mustang II front clip with rack
and pinion steering. He says it also has Vintage air and Ron
Francis Wiring. One of its stellar features is a nice 2-tone
silver pearl paint. And there is more. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week with an
asking price of just $15,500. You know what we always say. This
is a nearly finished car at a starter car price.
Don't forget! Have these cars inspected
before you buy. One man's great opportunity is another man's
nightmare. You have to know if the car is right for you. See
the Cars On Line Inspection Service at http://www.cars-on-line.com/insp-1stpg.html
A 1959 Ford
F100 Pickup truck from Brentwood, California still has its
black plates. This is one of those classic vehicles that people
will say "restore it while you drive it." The seller
says it was used
on errands and runs to the dump for the last 17 years. They say
it is very original with 80,700 miles on the 6 cylinder engine
with a 3-speed manual transmission. According to the description,
the dash has never been cut, it has had one repaint and there
is some minor rust in the usual places. They say it needs window
rubbers and a few other items. Keep in mind that this truck may
need restoration. It will be our DEAL
of the DAY later in the week. The asking price is
only $3,900.
Here is another very original car. A rare 1956
Chrysler New Yorker has been listed from Stoughton, Wisconsin.
The seller does not give us much detail about the car. He says
it is in excellent condition with a 354 hemi engine, power steering,
power brakes, power windows and power seats and radial tires.
He says the car is beautiful. No word on whether the paint is
original or new. He does indicate that the air conditioning needs
work. It will be our DEAL of the DAY
next week because this car is priced at $14,500. At that price
this it would be interesting to find out more about the car.
I guess the reason we included this 1967
Chevy El Camino in the DEAL of the
DAY this week is because it looks so good in the photos.
It is obvious from the description that it is a driver class
car. The seller fails to include information on how original
the car is or the pedigree. The seller includes the information
the it currently is equipped with a rebuilt, aluminum 283 small
block and a close ratio 4-speed. It now has disc brakes, new
clutch, windshield and interior, according to the ad. The seller
says the paint is fair, and that there is a slight crack in the
dash. It will be our DEAL of the DAY
next week because the asking price is only $8,500.
Don't forget! Have these cars inspected
before you buy. One man's great opportunity is another man's
nightmare. You have to know if the car is right for you. See
the Cars On Line Inspection Service at http://www.cars-on-line.com/insp-1stpg.html
This may be the sleeper of the week among the low priced cars
listed today. This 1971
Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 was listed
by a collector from Lansing, Kansas. The seller says he is only
the second owner, but nevers says that the 400 motor and 400
Turbo transmission are original. This is the first question I
would ask. He says it has been garaged 95 percent of the time,
and that it is still a real head turner. Those are Corvette wheels.
He says it has always been pampered and maintained. It will be
featured in our DEAL of the DAY
on the front page of our website next week if it doesn't sell
before then ... the asking price is only $9,900.
More cars could have qualified for this week's DEAL
of the DAY feature than we have days to publish them.
Often there are more cars than we can feature on our front page
every week. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for
the DEAL of the DAY feature.
Remember, you saw them here first:

You'll be blown away by these values,
all $10,000 and Under. Some
