Advertisers are worried that the economy and financial bail-out
talk will further erode the values in the current collector car
market. Personally I don't think the collector car market will
be sucked into a downward spiral to the same extent as you are
witnessing on Wall Street right now. In fact, as we have always
seen in the past, speculative money will probably pull out of
the stock market and be infused into the collector car market
at some point. We know it happened in 1987 and again in 2000
when stocks plummeted and investors decided to look for a safer
place to put their money. Both times the value of collector cars
went up. I don't know about you, but I'm lookin' for bargains
in the collector car market right now. I feel safer in cars than
in the stock market ... or banks for that matter.
One thing we know is that foreign buyers who have been supporting
the U.S. collector car market are drying up now too. About half
of the cars that were being sold in the U.S. were going to Norway,
Sweden, Denmark, Australia, Great Britain and Southern Europe.
But this week we heard from collectors in Sweden that the banks
there were folding too. The dollar is again becoming the currency
of preference as it gains value against other world currencies.
If you are a collector who loves his cars, just sit pat and
wait it out. I think we'll come out of this better off than we
were to begin with. My gut instinct says that you will see investors
pulling cash out of the stock market and putting it into collector
cars, especially if collector car prices keep falling. If you
are a "player" in the collector car market, looking
to flip cars for profit, my advice is to sell the cars you own
now and go to cash. Prices on collector cars have been declining
for over a year now. You may just see some "once in a lifetime"
type buying opportunities coming up in the next few weeks or
months. Good luck to you. This is a great time to be a car collector.
BUYING OPPORTUNITIES ...
If you look at our New
Listings today you'll find some of
the best buys on collector cars that we've ever witnessed here
at the Cars On Line office. Collectors are anticipating that
the market could go lower, so they're selling now to maintain
some equity and create cash for future buying opportunities.
Here is an example. One of my favorite collector cars of all
time has been listed by Classical Gas Motors out of Mansfield,
Texas. It is a 1954
Kaiser Darrin two-seater sports car
from an era when European type sports cars were non-existent
in the U.S. market. It was built by Kaiser Corporation through
their Kaiser-Willys Jeep division. They recognized the growing
desire in America for a two-seater sports car like the MG and
Jaguar sports cars that were so popular in Europe. Their unique
feature was sliding doors that retracted into the rear quarter
panel. I can't think of a better investment type '50s car than
this to build your collection on. See many more in today's New
Listings.
CITROEN STARS AT PARIS
AUTO SHOW ...
Conventional wisdom would have
said that the 2009 Ferrari California would be the hands on bet
to be the star of the 2008 Paris Motor Show, October 4-19, 2008
at Porte De Versailles in Paris, France. But they are wrong.
We think the most important exotic concept this year is the GTbyCitroen
concept car. If you play the video game "Gran Turismo"
you probably already
know this car which was designed with both Japanese and European
styling for the video gamers. Citroen built it to display "in
the flesh" at the Paris show. The conept car is to be powered
by a zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell. That, too, is still just
a concept. The Ferrari California is a real production car which
is said to be sold out for the next two production years in advance.
You may remember when we reviewed it here previously. On paper
it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, and was developed
with the input of race car legend Michael Schumacher. Also on
display at the Paris show is a Peugeot RC HYmotion4 concept,
a hybrid euro sports sedan that would probably be too expensive
to actually produce but the concept really turns heads.
The Paris show will be one of the most
important of the year because both the Tokyo and the Frankfurt
shows are held every other year. In this off year, the Paris
show gives us the first look at foreign car offerings and concept
cars. It looks as though hybrids and hydrogen cars are being
taken more seriously this year. In 2007, the hybrid concepts
took a back seat to the higher horsepower sports and exotic car
designs. This year manufacturers are paying alternative fuel
cars more than just lip service. Click
here of a look at the 2008 Paris Motor Show
links, or go to the
official website.
PROBLEMS WITH THE ZR1
So far General Motors is denying
reports that the production of the Corvette ZR1 has been halted.
The plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky was shut down for the week.
We think the economy will play a factor in this before it is
over. However, despite the ZR1's $100,000+ price tag, there are
leaks coming out of Detroit that GM will lose money heavily on
this Corvette indulgence. What is even more worrisome is whether
this means changes in Corvette production itself. Where there
is smoke there is fire. GM had projected that they would be building
1,500 to 1,700 of these ZR1 Corvettes. That was just announced
in September.
Rumors that GM and Chrysler were in
merger talks are rampant. But what good would come of combining
two losers like GM and Chrylser? Both are running in the red.
GM's problem is poor sales and a huge obligation to pay pensions
to their retired workers. GM is said to have lost $15.5 billion
in the second quarter of this year.
CAR SHOW CALENDAR
We've updated the Cars On Line
Car
Show Calendar so you can see the shows
for October and November this fall. The big show that is going
on this weekend is the Hershey
AACA Regional Car Show in Hershey,
Pennsylvania. It is one of the oldest and biggest shows in the
country. You can find information about the auction held there
in our calendar
of events. If you can get to Louisiana
and the Gulf Coast, this weekend, you might want to take in the
12th Annual Cruisin' the Coast. It is a one-of-a-kind event which
includes a week long cruise of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, drag
racing, oldies entertainment, cruise-ins, a swap meet, the Vicari
Auction and more. Every collector needs to experience this event
at least once in their lives.
Be sure to check our November
calendar and set your schedule accordingly.
COL INSPECTION FOR '70
BOSS 302
A very important collector car
inspection report is online for you to view. This report was
done for an Australian collector who was in the market for a
Mustang muscle car. He was very concerned about the quality of
the car and how much he should pay for this vehicle. You can
read the report on the
1970 Boss 302 Mustang by clicking here.
Now, more than ever before it is important to have a car appraised.
We believe appraisers have to use current pricing based on actual
current market values. In the insurance business that is referred
to as basing your valus on "comps," or the prices paid
on comparable vehicles. The report is an excellent example of
what you get when you ask Cars On Line to find an appraiser to
work for you.
Here is a link to the Cars
On Line Inspection and Appraisal page.
Look down the buttons on the left hand side of the page and click
on the Sample
Reports. To order an inspection click
on the button that says Place
Order.
PROJECT CARS
A very rare classic Mustang
has appeared in our New
Listings today. If you are in the market
for a car to restore, here is one worth taking a look at. The
1967
Mustang Pacesetter is a classic Mustang
that has remained under
the radar for most collectors. There were only 324 of them built
by Ford. The seller from Winchester, Indiana says this is the
real deal, but needs to be restored. He said that the Marti Report
denotes it as being one of only 217 built with these features
and options. He says there is rust in the frame. Remember, every
part on this car is readily available, so this restoration will
happen. Are you the one to do it?
If you are looking for a project car
to restore, make sure you watch our New
Listings page for daily updates. Or
you can view hundreds of project car ads in the Cars On Line
Project
Car Section online.
(For those who may be new to the Cars On Line Update newsletter ... the
page you are reading now is the newsletter page. Linked here
are the most important pages of the newsletter, the New
Listings page and the Price
Changes page. You may want to bookmark these two, because
they are updated in real time as the ads are loaded onto our
website. These links will be good through October 16, 2008. Then
on Friday, October 17, 2008, you'll get a new version of the
newsletter and fresh links will be available in that newsletter
for the following week.)

DEAL OF THE DAY
Here in the Cars On Line Daily
Update newsletter readers get
to preview the cars that will be in our DEAL
of the DAY feature for the coming
week. These are the cars that the Cars On Line staff judges to
be the best deals on our website. The average buyer has to wait
till next week to see all these bargains when they appear on
our home page. However newsletter readers get to preview them
here first.
Mercury muscle cars are very under-appreciated
in this market. While Mercury Cougars are ranked among the top
ten muscle cars of all time in terms of popularity, they never
get the kind of money
you'd pay for big block Mach 1's or even small block Camaros.
But this 1970
Mercury Cougar Convertible from Spring
Lake, Michigan is almost too cheap. The seller says it is a beautiful,
well maintained Cat with a 351 Cleveland engine, automatic transmission,
power convertible top and the famous hideaway headlights and
sequential tail lights. The seller never mentions any numbers
matching so you should ask about that first. But I wouldn't count
on it at this price. He says everything on the car is in good
running condition, and he states that the car has 99k actual
miles. It will be our DEAL of
the DAY on Saturday because he is only asking $14,900.
Hurry ... and I mean, Hurry! This one should not last the weekend.
Gateway Classic Cars of Charlotte, North Carolina listed
so many cars this week I would not want to have to count them
all. But here is the very best deal that they came up with out
of all those
cars. This 1940
Chevy Coupe is a rare street rod. It was an older build and
still shows nicely ... better than your average driver class
car. It has a nicely done custom interior (which you can see
from the photos.) Under the hood is a small block Chevy 350 ci
engine. The custom orange and blue paint is tastefully done and,
according to Gateway, looks amazing. They claim it is
a nice running rod too. You can probably guess that it is a No.
3 condition driver, but better than most "starter cars."
Be sure to have it inspected before you buy. But hurry. Gateway
has it priced at just $24,995.
(You'll also want to view this 1940
Chevy 2-Door Sedan from Gateway in North Carolina. Again
they're asking just $22,995 on this beauty.)
It doesn't even matter that the engine is not original to
the car ... this 1965
Plymouth Satellite from McHenry, Illinois has a 426 Street
Wedge in it and that walks and talks all by itself. This car
is special. The seller
says it is not a show car but a nice solid driver. It is hard
to tell too much from the photos. You should have it inspected.
It does not sound like the car was restored, but maybe it didn't
need it. Who can tell with these photos? The seller lists a litany
of updates. Now there is a little catch when you get to the last
few lines of the ad. He says the transmission is ticking. But
he says he has a rebuilt transmission to go with the car. If
you are a little handy this may fit your budget. It surely is
a desirable clone. It will be our DEAL
of the DAY early next week. The asking price is just
$15,900.
Don't forget! Have these cars inspected
before you buy. One man's great opportunity is another man's
nightmare. You have to know if the car is right for you. See
the Cars On Line Inspection Service page at http://www.cars-on-line.com/insp-1stpg.html
One muscle car you can bet is very rare and hard-to-find in
this condition is this 1972
Chevy Monte Carlo with the big block 454 engine. Although
the seller from Osage Beach, Missouri does not
specifically state that the engine is original, it seems possible
by the way he words the rest of the ad. You should check on this.
He says the big block engine runs and sounds great. It comes
with automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, air
conditioning and has rare rear defroster option. He says the
interior is all very nice, original with bench seat, and that
the exterior is the original Bronze color with a tan vinyl top.
He says this car is an extra nice driver and has been garage
kept all its life.
A truly rare car was just listed from Homewood, Alabama. It
is a 1960 Pontiac
Bonneville that looks pretty good for an old girl. The seller
says it is a solid Southern car with an older paint job. It has some floorboard
repair, some filler in a tail panel and some bubbles in the lower
doors and quarters. He says the interior is excellent including
the headliner; stainless is nice, bumpers fair and it needs door
weatherstripping. But he says the car runs excellent. It has
a 389 with a 4-barrel carburetor and an automatic transmission.
Be the first one in your town to have one like this. It will
be our DEAL of the DAY feature
on the front page of the website next week with an asking price
of just $9,800. Hurry!
Early '60s Ford Thunderbirds are among the next "future
collectibles" to get hot. For many years they have been
slowly inching up in value. The '50s T-Birds suffered a setback
in pricing in the past few years due to the fact that so many
of them have now been restored and the over abundance
of them in the collector car market. So that also slowed the
emergence of the '60s cars as hot collectibles. But you take
a look at this 1962
Ford Thunderbird from Yorba Linda, California and you just
know that this car will have collector value going forward. That
"bullet" style design is classic. Besides this one
is special. More than just a driver, the seller says he rates
this car as a "3.5", or in other words better than
a No. 3 condition car, but maybe just short of calling it a No.
2 condition show car. In fact, he thinks so much of the way this
car looks that he ran a special Slide
Show ad of it so you could see more detail. He contends
that it is mechanically sound, but needs some minor interior
work. It will be our DEAL of the DAY
feature on the front page of the website next week with an asking
price of just $12,500.
Don't forget! Have these cars inspected
before you buy. One man's great opportunity is another man's
nightmare. You have to know if the car is right for you. See
the Cars On Line Inspection Service page at http://www.cars-on-line.com/insp-1stpg.html
Mopar enthusiasts are gonna' flip over this 1969
Dodge Dart which was just listed from Tucson, Arizona. You'll
have to admit it is a great looking little track car, and a lot
of car for the money. First off, it is a solid Arizona car: no
rust, solid floors, trunk, quarters, excellent condition, good
paint, inner fenderwells
intact, dash pad has no cracks, headliner has no rips, according
to the description. Then the equipment on this car are worth
more than the asking price. From the '70 built 383 Magnum engine
with Holley 750 double pump with Hedman under chassis headers;
to the suspension with Magnum Force tubular upper A arms, line
lock, TCI Super Street Fighter 3800-4000 stall converter, Comp
engineering 8-point roll cage, 2x2" welded-in subframe connectors,
tied cage, five-point harnesses and even a Summit 8-gallon fuel
cell. Really, we're only scratching the surface here. It will
be our DEAL of the DAY next
week because this is a real steal for just $15,900.
As always there are a few cars that should have made the DEAL of the DAY feature this week,
but we ran out of days. You'll want to view the ad for a 1969 Chevy Nova
SS from Lynden, Washington for $15,000 (has an NOM 350 engine);
a 1964 Chevy
El Camino from Clifton Park, New York for $15,000; a 1971
Chevelle SS 454 listed by Gateway Classic Cars out
of Charlotte, North Carolina for $30,995; or a 1987
Corvette Convertible with only 21,900 miles from Edwardsville,
Illinois for $14,500.
CARS FOR
$10,000-AND-UNDER
You'll be blown away by these values,
all $10,000 and Under. So many
low priced cars are being listed that we have added a section
to the newsletter called $10,000-AND-UNDER. Some of these cars are outstanding, really
nice cars, not junk, and yet they are priced at what we would
consider "pocket change."
