2.             CHECK RUST ON DOORS, FLOORS, TORQUE BOXES, SUB-FRAME RAILS, SHOCK TOWERS, RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT, INNER/OUTER FENDERS, TRUNK, ETC.

 

Photos –                Please take digital photos of all four corners of the exterior of the car, the frame rails, floor pan, oil pan, interior seats and dashboard, gauges, steering wheel, odometer, convertible top, carpeting, trunk, back seat, windows, chrome, metal panels, doors, etc. Also take photo of trim tag and VIN tag if available. Take photos of anything that is not right on the car. ALSO TAKE PHOTOS OF THE TOP UP, DOWN, AND IN THE UP POSITION WITH THE WINDOWS UP TO CHECK FOR GAPS / OPENINGS.

Comments:          THERE IS APPROXIMATELY 1" OF FREE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEN THE WHEEL IS AT THE CENTER. THE TEST-DRIVE COVERED APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 4 MILES WITH SPEEDS UP 65 MPH. THE VEHICLE DRIVES AND RIDES WELL.

Comments:          THE INSPECTOR NOTED THERE WAS A SMALL PUFF OF SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST WHEN THE ENGINE WAS FIRST STARTED. THE SMOKE DISSIPATED IMMEDIATELY AFTER START UP. THE CARBURETOR IS AN AFTERMARKET EDELBROCK, MODEL #1407-2794. THERE IS DAMP SEEPAGE AROUND THE ENGINE OIL PAN AT THE REAR MAIN SEAL AREA. THERE ARE 2 DROPS OF RESIDUAL OIL ON THE STEERING LINKAGE. THE FRONT TIMING COVER IS SEEPING SLIGHTLY. THE ENGINE HAS BEEN RECENTLY RE-PAINTED AND DETAILED. THERE IS AN AFTERMARKET INLINE FUEL FILTER BEFORE THE FUEL PUMP.

THE COOLANT LEVEL IN THE RADIATOR IS SLIGHTLY LOW BUT THERE ARE NO VISIBLE LEAKS. THE RADIATOR AND HOSES ARE IN GOOD CONDITION WITH PROPER J CODES. THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE CODE HAS WORN OFF. THE RADIATOR IS ROTTING OUT AND THE CORE SUPPORT IS HEAVILY RUSTED AND APPEARS TO BE FLAKING. (SEE PIC RADIATOR SUPPORT)

Comments:          THE SELLER STATED THE HORN MOUNTING BRACKET IS MISSING WHICH IS WHY THE HORNS ARE NOT INSTALLED. THE WIRING, RELAYS AND ALL ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS ARE INTACT. *2- THE RADIO IS AN AFTERMARKET AM/FM/CD, WHICH IS FULLY OPERATIONAL. THE INSPECTOR NOTED THERE IS WIRING TO MOUNT AN AMPLIFIER AND SUBWOOFER IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THERE IS A 1/2" HOLE DRILLED THROUGH THE FIRE WALL TO ALLOW THE AMPLIFIER WIRES TO BE ROUTED THROUGH. THE HOLE WAS DRILLED CLEANLY.

THE PAINT IS PEELING ON REAR VALANCE APPROXIMATELY 1/4" IN DIAMETER 3" TO THE LEFT OF THE FUEL FILL CAP. THE PAINT IS CRACKED AT THE FRONT CORNERS OF THE TRUNK OPENING. THE REAR BUMPER IS MISALIGNED ON THE LEFT SIDE AND HAS CONTACTED THE BODY CHIPPING THE PAINT ALLOWING SURFACE RUST TO DEVELOP. THERE IS ONE FISH EYE IN THE LEFT FRONT FENDER. THE LEFT FRONT DOOR PAINT IS BUBBLING UP IN AN AREA APPROXIMATELY 2" WIDE INDICATING RUST. THE PAINT IS CHIPPED APPROXIMATELY 1/8" ON THE LEFT SIDE SCOOP. THE PAINT IS CRACKED ON BOTH REAR 1/4 PANELS AROUND THE SCOOPS. THE 1/4 PANEL AND REAR VALANCE LIPS, WHERE THE WEATHER STRIPPING SEALS, IS ROUGH INDICATING PREVIOUS REPAIRS. THE SELLER STATED THE REAR 1/4 PANELS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE REAR GLASS IS HEAVILY SCRATCHED IN A 1/8 SQUARE INCH AREA ON THE LEFT LOWER CORNER. THE SIDE GLASS IS LIGHTLY SCRATCHED. THE WINDSHIELD IS LIGHTLY SCRATCHED FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE WIPER ARM. THE GLASS IS ALL-ORIGINAL TO THE VEHICLE. THERE IS EVIDENT BONDO USE AT THE TOP OF THE B-PILLARS. THERE IS A 3/4" RUST SPOT ON THE TOP OF THE LEFT INNER FENDER WELL. THE CHROME TRIM ABOVE THE LEFT FRONT WINDOW IS DENTED AND SCRATCHED. THE REMAINING CHROME IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE RIGHT DOOR TO ¼ PANEL GAP IS WIDE AT THE TOP AND FADED INTO A NORMAL SIZE GAP AT THE BOTTOM. THE REAR TRUNK GAP IS SLIGHTLY MISALIGNED WITH THE REAR VALANCE. THE HOOD HINGES HAVE TO BE PUSHED ON TO PROPERLY ALIGN THE HOOD WHEN CLOSING. THE CORNERS OF THE HOOD SCOOP ARE PULLED UP AND DO NOT LAY FLUSH ON THE HOOD SURFACE.

THE PAINT IS PEALING ON REAR VALANCE APPROXIMATELY 1/4" IN DIAMETER 3" TO THE LEFT OF THE FUEL FILL CAP. THE PAINT IS CRACKED AT THE FRONT CORNERS OF THE TRUNK OPENING. THE REAR BUMPER IS MISALIGNED ON THE LEFT SIDE AND HAS CONTACTED THE BODY CHIPPING THE PAINT ALLOWING SURFACE RUST TO DEVELOP. THERE IS ONE FISH EYE IN THE LEFT FRONT FENDER. THE CHROME TRIM ABOVE THE LEFT FRONT WINDOW IS DENTED AND SCRATCHED. THE REMAINING CHROME IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THERE IS RUST AT THE BOTTOM OF THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT APPROXIMATELY 1/8" LONG. THERE IS LIGHT SURFACE VISIBLE RUST ON THE SHOCK TOWERS. THERE IS RUST ON THE LEFT DOOR JAM AT THE REAR. THE RIGHT DOOR TO ¼ PANEL GAP IS WIDE AT THE TOP BY FADED INTO A NORMAL SIZE GAP AT THE BOTTOM. THE REAR TRUNK GAP IS SLIGHTLY MISALIGNED WITH THE REAR VALANCE. THE HOOD HINGES HAVE TO BE PUSHED ON TO PROPERLY ALIGN THE HOOD WHEN CLOSING. THE CORNERS OF THE HOOD SCOOP ARE PULLED UP AND DO NOT LAY FLUSH ON THE HOOD SURFACE.

3)       THE LEFT FRONT SEAT IS WORN SLIGHTLY ALONG THE SEAMS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEAT BACK. THREE OF THE FRONT FOLDING SEAT RUBBER BUMP STOPS ARE MISSING. THE ADDITIONAL SEATS, INCLUDING THE FOLD DOWN REAR SEAT, ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. THE RADIO BEZEL HAS BEEN CUT TO ALLOW FOR THE AFTERMARKET RADIO INSTALLATION. THE ORIGINAL RADIO BEZEL IS INTACT AND AVAILABLE WITH THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE 2 TO 3 FUEL TANK MOUNTING BOLTS MISSING. THERE IS A HOLE APPROXIMATELY 1/2" IN DIAMETER TO THE LEFT OF THE FUEL TANK. THERE IS ANOTHER SQUARE HOLE APPROXIMATELY 3X3 INCHES NEAR THE REAR SEAT ON THE LEFT SIDE. THERE IS NO RUST IN THE TRUNK AND THE VINYL PAD IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE VINYL MAT IS DAMP ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRUNK. THE LEFT SIDE TRUNK WEATHER STRIPPING IS INTACT BUT THE 1/4 PANEL AND REAR VALANCE LIPS, WHERE THE WEATHER STRIPPING SEALS, IS ROUGH INDICATING PREVIOUS REPAIRS. THE SELLER STATED THE REAR 1/4 PANELS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE RIGHT DOOR PANEL IS CRACKED AT THE ARM REST/DOOR PULL. THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, GLOVE BOX, STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN NEED REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT.

4)       THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION OPERATED WELL DURING THE TEST-DRIVE.

5)       THIS VEHICLE WILL REQUIRE A LARGE AMOUNT OF WORK TO BRING IT TO SHOW QUALITY. A COMPLETE RESTORATION MAY BE NEEDED BASED ON THE LACK OF ATTENTION IN DETAIL.

CONDITION CLASSES

 

Class One (Excellent):

Almost always a “body off” restoration, or an untouched, factory-perfect, piece that is very close to perfect. All components are either original or appear as new and are fully operational. This car is a top show winner and is not driven, but transported to shows by trailer. This car is almost “one of a kind”. This particular class of vehicle is very rare. The vehicle is completely detailed, including the engine compartment, interior trim, wiring, suspension, paint, and frame. Ideally, this vehicle has been judged with other vehicles in its class and achieved the highest point ratings.

 

Class Two (Very Good):

This car is well restored with an eye for detail. The interior and exterior show minimal wear, and it runs and rides smoothly. The car is driven very little (maybe 800 to 1,000 miles per year). This class is a slight grade below Class One. A Class Two has not been detailed to the extent that a Class One has been. This class (Class Two) has some evidence of use and wear, although not very much. It is considered “cherry” or “mint”. This vehicle might appear as a Class One until judged against one. It would not qualify as a 95, or better, “point” vehicle. (This class should have no rust on the undercarriage, not even surface rust.)

 

Class Three (Good):

This is a functional, drivable vehicle in good overall condition needing no, or only minor work. Most vehicles at car shows reflect this condition. This car is what is termed a “20 footer”. From 20 feet, it may look very good. Close inspection, however, would reveal some worn interior trim, and less than perfect paint (worn, and perhaps faded). You may even see some early evidence that surface rust is beginning in the body panels. This car is completely operational and is an “older restoration”. It is driven fairly often, runs great, and is enjoyed by its owner. It is probably a candidate for a full restoration. The undercarriage may display surface rust, and may be in need of detailing. Chrome and trim may exhibit limited pitting.

 

Class Four (Fair):

This type of car is a fun “driver” with a solid frame and is structurally sound. This car is in need of considerable work. It needs work in and out. Cosmetics, body, and mechanical components all need work, to some degree. It is not a serious collector candidate. Soft floors, isolated areas where rust has eaten through (but not structural), excessive use of Bondo, lots of pitted chrome, glass repairs are symptoms of this condition. Badly soiled headliners, badly soiled and ripped upholstery, rusted out trunks are also signs.

 

Class Five (Poor):

This type of car is in need of complete restoration and may, or may not, be able to be driven. The exterior body panels have significant areas of rust-through. The floor and structural components may, or may not, be intact. This car is usually the first project for layman’s attempt at restoration.

 

Class Six (Parts Car):

This type of car is good for parts only.
