Mercury Cougar GTE . This is a 1968 J-Code cougar from florida. We bought this car due to the fact that it was very solid, original quarters, frame rails, torque boxes, and rockers all solid. We did a very minor floor repair and a couple of small 3" metal repair on the bottom of the rear quarters and the inner drops.
The engine and transmission is all mercury..... Pulled from a 1966 mercury marauder s55 428 automatic 345 hp from the factory. This car was also from florida and had only 52k miles. I put a new timing chain, new high volume melon oil pump, new set of lifters and a pi intake. The motor is very tight and runs and sounds like a cobra jet. Just installed 2.5" exhaust with flow masters off the headers. Sounds super great. The front end is all new with new springs. It sits high and the springs need to be cut down, then the shocks can be installed and the front end aligned. New american racing wheels with new tires on the front. The back tires are used but like new. Also carries the 9" rearend with all new brakes and drums. New leaf springs and shackle kit. New interior kit, rug, headliner, dash. All new rubbers around doors and pillars. New front windshield. As you have noticed this car has some nice gte stuff.... Gte side moldings, $2000., gte fender emblems, $400., gte front grille bars, $400., gte hoodscoop, $150., all repro stuff, but very hard to find. This is my second recreation, the first one was a small block. The car still needs a days work if you want the headlights and rear blinkers to work. It's turn key right now and yard drives. If you like cougars and you want a big block and one that looks like a gte this is the car for you. ,br> As far as i know nobody else has tried to build a gte clone, so I should have the only 2 out there.
