Chevy Impala Slammed. Formally owned by Jessi James of West Coast Choppers, the 63 Impala looked good but was in need of some TLC.
New owner Dave Cantu of Redapt Systems Inc. contacted Speedware Motorsports to give the same care they had given many of his other vehicles.
First step was to remove all the harsh riding and oil leaking Hydraulics from the suspension, which quickly turned into a frame off restoration involving removal of the 327 cid. engine, powerglide transmission, all the steering and brakes.
Attention had to be paid to the frame due to the damage done by lifting such a heavy vehicle off the ground with hydraulics and having it land again.
After the frame was sandblasted and all the damage and cracks were identified, over 30 hours of fillet welding and grinding were required to make the frame ready for the protective finish of satin black powder coating.
Wanting to have adjustable ride height and smooth cruising was the goal when the choice was made for Air Ride Technology's Strong Arm kit with air strut fronts and air bag rears and gas shocks, individual corner adjustability is made with fast flow solenoids and readout mounted in the driver's cabin.
Looking for the perfect image and fitment, Speedware contacted Budnik Wheels for a set of 18x8.5 fronts and 20x10 rears with Fuzion tires, the open spoke design allowing for the Bear 13.5" front rotors and 4 piston calipers, and 13.5" rotors with single piston calipers in the rear.
Needing a fresh engine and transmission was the perfect time to go for a new crate Chevy 350cid and Turbo 350 transmission, shorty headers leading into 2.5" mandrel exhaust built in house at Speedware with Flowmaster Hush Power mufflers, and exit out custom up turned exhaust tips on each side.
The goal was to make a classic, reliable, smooth, low riding boulevard cruiser, Dave is very happy with the end result of Speedware's efforts. Speedware's owner Shaun Duncan and designer/builder Brandon Rottjer are certainly happy with it and proud to see it rolling through town, Low and Smooth.
