Pontiac Firebird . Complete frame off restoration started in October of 1998, with 50K original miles. This was a Georgia car that I brought to Peoria in the spring of 1998. It was in great condition then, but I knew it had to be restored to my specifications.
First things first, the body was completely dismantled and prepped for the new paint. I stuck with the original paint numbers that matched the dark green Pontiac color for 1967. When the paint was striped off we were happy to find absolutely no rust anywhere. (Georgia car) The car was prepped, primed with two coats, one plain & one mixed with the paint color of the car. It was then given 3 coats of factory paint & finished off with 3 coats of clear. I have had nothing but rave reviews on the finished product. If interested, I have complete photos of the whole paint process available upon request.
Next came the engine which was totally rebuilt at the same time as the paint. The block was bored to .030 to straighten a slight taper. We then did a complete valve job, including bronze guides. In addition, we installed all new pistons, rings, bearings, comp. camshaft, oil pump, freeze plugs & gaskets.
After reassembly, I drove the car sparingly & still thought it was missing something. In spring of 2003, I decided to have additional components added or replaced or repaired. Here is a list of the main things that I did to complete the project:
This car has factory electric windows. These needed to be rewired & made operable. I did that.
It also had factory air, so I replaced the old bulky unit with new Vintage Air that took up very little space. I concealed all of the hoses running to the firewall under the wheel well covers. This made a very clean appearance.
I took the battery from its original resting place & ran wire to the trunk where the battery has found a new home. Once again, this eliminated clutter under the hood.
I added rack & pinion steering, spring over shocks & a heavy duty front sway-bar for stability. Finally, I added Wildwood stainless steel brakes all around. This combination makes the car handle like a dream.
In the rear end, I added a 4:11 posi, which are driving my 17” Torque Thruster II wheels. I had to go inside and do a mini tub to accommodate the wheels.
Under the hood, I replaced the old heads & intake with Edelbrock aluminum. Also, replaced the 750 Holly with a 650 Demon carb that seems to work much better
A Mallory MSD-6A ignitition box & Mallory pro-billet distributor was also added for reliability.
Finally, I added Hooker 2” super comp. headers, Flowmaster mufflers & 2 ½” stainless steel tail pipes were added for that super sound that definitely turns heads.
This car now has 58K miles & with the added new interior, it drives and shows better than ever. I hope the new owner likes it as much as I have. All bids over $28K will be considered.
Additional pics & parts receipts are also available.
