Sporting a red, white and blue color scheme reminiscent of the SC/Rambler, the 1970 AMC Rebel Machine was introduced at the NHRA World Drag Racing Finals in Dallas, Texas in the fall of 1969. Four of the bone stock Rebel Machines were in competition in F-Class during press day, while ten Rebel Machines were on display. Even Linda Vaughn and her Hurst Shifter entourage of shapely models were present. It was the first time America saw AMC's fastest muscle car of all time.
It is a rare treat for Cars On Line readers to be able to view a 1970 AMC Rebel Machine. Although 2,326 Rebel Machines were produced in 1970, there just are not many that have survived. A private collector from Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania is selling his today. You'll find it in the Cars On Line AMC Muscle Car Section online. He says it was an original Virginia car. From the photos it looks as though it retains the reflective 3M stripes which give it its character. The seller says there are only 48,000 miles on the car, and indicates that it has won many awards. He considers it to be in "very good condition." No restoration was mentioned so you'll have to talk to him to get more info on the condition class. Or you could have it inspected. We'd love to do the job for you.
The seller says it comes with the 390 ci Ram Air engine and a 4-speed with Hurst shifter. It has the 3.54 rear axle. This is the Twin Grip differential. The car also comes with power disc brakes. You will notice that the seller does not include information about any equipment being "numbers matching," so you will have to get that information when you call. The Machine came standard with a 390 ci (6.4 L) motor rated at 340 horsepower and 430 foot-pounds of torque @ 3600 rpm. Special heads, valve train and cam were employed by AMC for The Machine. This is the most powerful engine AMC ever optioned in an AMC muscle car. Standard on The Machine was a Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed with a Hurst floor shifter.
From the photos you can see that it comes with American Torque Thrust wheels instead of the Machine wheels made so famous back in the day. The Rebel Machine orignally came with 15-inch aluminum wheels that were also used on some AMX's and Javelins.
The seller says it has a Ram Air hood with a tach built into the rear of the scoop. From the factory, The Machine would have featured a large Ram Air intake hood scoop painted Electric Blue (code B6). The early hood scoops were layed fiberglass, but in 1970 AMC switched to hoods which were injection molded of higher quality. AMC also sold aftermarket parts from their dealerships which could increase horsepower to 400. Those cars were capable of running 12-second quarter-miles.
Motor Trend magazine did quite a bit of reporting on AMC's The Machine. They claimed it to be one of the great muscle cars of all time. We agree. This one is well worth checking out. What an addition it would be to any muscle car collection.

Marc Schiliro just notified us he will be offering a small collection of his cars at the upcoming Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auto Auction in Uncasville, Connecticut, June 21-24, 2017. Schiliro is a consumate car collector who's hobby turned into a full-time business. Since we met him at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale many years ago, he has joined our Cars On Line Dealer Network. You will often find his specialty cars offered here in the newsletter.
Among the cars he will be taking to the Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auto Auction in two weeks is a 1966 Shelby GT350H "Hertz Rent-A-Racer". He notes that it is one of only 59 built in Ivy Green with Gold stripes, a stunning combination. In the Barrett-Jackson promos they say it is one of the best examples known to exist. This is the kind of car that a top collector will want to own.
We had scheduled to make this 1963 Dodge 330 Station Wagon one of our DEALs of the DAY today (see below.) But then we got an excited message fromt he Florida owner. RM-Sotheby's Auction Company has announced some interesting additions to their inventory for the 2017 Santa Monica Auction, June 24, 2017 at the historic Barker Hangar. Here is a sampling of cars you'll see going to the highest bidder two weeks from Saturday:
It is amazing. This 1929 Duesenberg Model J Berline Convertible by Murphy will be offered out of an exclusive California collection at No Reserve. Considering that the estimated value on this car is between $800,000 and $950,000, it shows a lot of confidence in the quality of the bidders to offer this car at No Reserve. It is said that Singer Sewing Machine heir Arthur K. Bourne purchased it new and had the Berline coachwork done at Murphy's shop in Pasadena. The Mercedes style headlights were done by Zeiss. There are a number of one-off items buit in.
Presented in Chicane Grey, this thoroughbred 2016 McLaren 675LT is one of only 500 ever produced. It is the essence of what an exotic Super Car should be. “Experience the raw adrenaline of the McLaren 675LT, the lightest, most driver-focused, most exclusive series production McLaren supercar ever built," is the legend McLaren put on it when it was unveiled. "More power, less weight, more precision – nothing escaped McLaren’s attention in the quest for perfection on both road and track.” There are only 730 miles recorded on this high horsepower example.
Among the domestic classic cars for sale at RM-Sotheby's Santa Monica Auction will be Lot # 159, a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible which comes with a V8 engine and automatic transmission. It has a power top, power steering and power brakes. As you can see from the photos, the undercarriage and engine bay are nicely detailed. Call RM-Sotheby's for more information.
Over the past five years, the event has emerged as a highlight on SoCal’s buzzing collector car scene; in 2016, the auction generated $14.2 million in sales, with bidders from all over the globe. This year’s event promises an even more thrilling lineup of over 170 collector cars and select memorabilia as the RM team works to further grow the sale and elevate the client experience.

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted in the DEAL of the DAY feature on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
A private collector from Fenton, Missouri has advertised his 1971 Ford Torino 500 for sale this week. We've chosen it as our top DEAL of the DAY because the price is way below average for a No. 3 condition car. We don't know what condition class it was appraise out to be, but from the photos we think it looks like a daily drive type average No. 3 condition car. The seeler says it has the 351 C big block motor with factory air conditioning, power steering and power front disc brakes. They also indicate it has 92k miles. It is said to have new paint and bodywork done. There is some filler in the body. He says the interior is in "good condition." What we like about this Torino is that you can get in it right. The price is $9,500.
Here is an offering we just can't wait to show you. Top Notch Vehicles in Jefferson, Wisconsin, just posted a 1955 Desoto Fireflight Sportsman 2-Dr Hardtop for sale. This would be a prized find for any collector, large or small. To find one at this price? Amazing. Open the hood to view the 291 ci Hemi engine, then hear it rumble through dual exhausts. They say the Powerflite automatic transmission works well. This is one to have inspected right away. "The paint is older, but still looks great. The body is very solid. I believe the time in Florida and Alabama kept it in such great shape," Top Notch wrote in their description. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The price is just $17,995. Hurry on this one.
Is it the James Dean car? Is it an air-cooled Porsche? People crane their necks trying to figure this one out. Streetside Classics in Atlanta just posted a unique, one-of-a-kind 1994 Classic Motor Carriages 359 Speedster (they are careful not to use the word "Porsche" here because it is a complete custom fabrication by CMC.) It is a perfect blend of the old and the new. It has the Porsche 356 speedster form combined with the look and equipment of an air-cooled 959 coupe. It is sort of like saying, "This is a Porsche classic, only better." The motor is a VW air-cooled 1600 cc with a 4-speed. This is like having the most exotic Porsche you can buy without any of the maintenance problems. It also comes without the Porsche price tage. It will be our DEAL of the DAY because the asking price is only $16,995.
Here is a 1948 Ford Convertible Street Rod built from a real convertible donor car from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is powered by a 454 Chevy and has a 700R GM automatic transmission with overdrive. The car employs a Monte Carlo front clip and rear end and has Britz bumpers, GM steering column and Billet Speciaty wheels. Check out the nice custom interior with 60/40 split power seats, VDO gauges, Wabbit dash and banjo steering wheel. Of course, it has air conditioning. It drives well, has been on the Hot Rod Power Tour and drives dependably, according to the seller. The best part is the price. The seller has priced it like it was a starter car, but this one is so much more. We have chosen it to be our DEAL of the DAY this coming week. The asking price is $27,000.
Even among the great classic '50s cars this 1956 Mercury Montclair 2-Dr Hardtop stands out. Look at all the '50s chrome and forward look styling. This is the era when American made cars came of age. They are considered chromed pieces of art. This one is being sold from an estate. The owner's son says this was his father's favorite from his collection. The newly rebuilt 292 ci engine is said to have less than 200 miles on it. The air conditioning was added to the car. The color is called Persimmon, a variant of orange, and it has the classic '50s style two tone orange and white interior. So sharp! The car is in Lake St Louis, Missouri. What a great opportunity for any collector to own a classic '50s car like this one. And it remains affordable. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week if it lasts that long. The asking price is $18,000. Hurry!
Here is what looks to be fresh built 1929 Ford Pickup Roadster offered for sale by a private seller from Idaho Falls, Idaho. It is equipped with a fresh rebuilt 283 ci Chevy, a rebuilt 350 turbo tranny, a Ford 8-inch differential and a new Walker radiator. The builder usesd new Brookville top bows, and modified the look with windshield and stations that are chopped 2 inches. It has a Pete and Jakes triangulated 4-bar rear suspension with coil overs, while the front suspension is Pete and Jakes chrome axle with a 3-inch drop and parallel 4-bars. The seller has health issues which will keep him from enjoying this car. Your gain. It will be our DEAL of the DAY this week with an asking price of $26,000.
My real gripe with the traditional Volkswagen Beetle was that it looked a little toppy, with the ride stance too high for the styling. This 1978 VW Super Beetle Convertible takes care of that problem by lowering the stance. Just that one variable makes the VW look rounder and sleeker. It has a great look with virtually no sacrifice to originality. The seller says it is a California car with no rust. The engine was rebuilt and it has new custom paint, a new top with matching cover boot and new interior. There have been so many updates to the car and so many parts replaced you'll have to read the ad to get all the info. But suffice it to say that this VW Super Beetle will be our DEAL of the DAY this week. After all that work the asking price is still only $9,450.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
