It was a surprise to NHRA World Champion Mike Schmidt when he had to eat the exhaust from a 1963 Plymouth Savoy 426 Max Wedge named "Wild Wild West" back in the day. Little did he know that would happen five times during the 1965 and 1966 NHRA racing seasons. In fact, the 426 Max Wedge Plymouth was the one car his Ford Galaxie 427 factory sponsored Lightweight Super Stock never could beat.
The 1963 Plymouth Savoy 426 Max Wedge is the featured car in our newsletter today. The private owner from Kalispell, Montana says it is for sale. That should light a fire under the Mopar community. It is one of only 177 HC 426 2-door Savoys ever built with 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission. For Nostalgia Race Car collectors, it doesn't get any better than this. What it comes down to is that this is one of the "baddest Mopars of all time."
The gorgeous rotisserie restoration was done by Darin Rumpel of Darin's Automotive-Precision Mopar Restoration in Minnesota. If you look at the photos in the ad, you will admit that this car is now in mint condition. The seller says great care was taken to keep the car in its original factory condition with race preparation. Complete ownership is documented back to the assembly line and verified by noted Mopar historians Darrell Davis and Galen Govier. The current owner said, "The car will come with a complete set of restoration and racing photos in a leather album along with a folder with a copy of titles back to 1973, service history, and factory build card." It was in the Patrick McGroeder Collection in Phoenix, Arizona, and on display by special invitation at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale.
California NHRA racing fans will remember when this car ran Lions, Irwindale, Salinas, Santa Maria, Sacramento, Vernalis, and Fremont as a Stock Eliminator. It's best time was 11.41 @ 121 mph on 7-inch tires. The original owner won Mr. Eliminator in 1965 at Carlsbad, running 11.88 @ 120 mph and defeating Glen Tyree’s Pontiac. When this car was brand new it was taken to Hayden Profitt's race shop to be specially tuned. Later, Bob Hickman tuned it for its class victory at the Winternationals in the early 1970's.
For a more detailed history of its racing prowess, readers should click over to our Cars On Line blog site today where this 1963 Plymouth Savoy 426 Max Wedge is featured. While you are there, tell us if you remember seeing it run under the name "Wild Wild West" or "Mister Wedge." We'd like to here your NHRA racing stories from back in the day also. Use the comments section at the end of the article to wax nostalgic.

Linked above are the New Listings and Price Changes pages. These pages are updated in real time to include every addition to the Cars On Line.com Collector Car Market.
In the Cadillac-LaSalle Club newsletter this week there is a feature story about a unique, one-off factory supercharged 1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible. The story included a You Tube video link where Holly Smith is interviewed about this amazing car during the 2013 Amelia Island Concours. (Click the photo, left, to view the video.) This unique Supercharged Cadillac will be a featured attraction at this year's Cadillac-LaSalle Club 2017 Grand National Meet, August 1-5, 2017 in Tysons Corner, Virginia. The car was built for World War II Ace John E. Alexander, a friend of Harley Earl, GM's head of design. Alexander and GM engineer Frank Burrell worked out the details of how to supercharge the engine. The supercharger, along with twin 4-barrel carburetors were said to produce 300 horsepower. The side exhaust pipes were unmuffled, and a lever was used to open them up or close them for a quieter ride. Here is a link to the most recent CLC newsletter in .pdf format.

Watch out, readers! Don't pull a neck muscle doing a double take after reading this headline! You did read it correctly. This is a 1970 Plymouth Superbird Convertible being offered for sale by Classic Car Marketing in Southern California. It is an "over the top" tribute that Mopar fans may or may not appreciate. You have to have a sense of humor. It is a great conversation starter when you take this Superbird Convertible to a car show.
Classic Car Marketing tells us it is an " absolutely stunning, show quality 1970 Superbird convertible tribute ... based on a ragtop 1970 Satellite donor with real Superbird and Mopar parts and accessories, a period correct 440 Six Pak engine and transmission." Of course, it has the Pistol Grip shifter. What a kick to drive this tribute Winged Warrior. Click thru to the ad to see more photos.
This issue of the Cars On Line newsletter has more factory race cars in its offerings than we have ever had in one newsletter ... ever! Here is an awesome find. Motorcar Classics out of Famingdale, New York posted a 1963 Ford Galaxie 427 Lightweight factory built drag car. They found the car in Georgia. No historical information has been offered, but this car has been the topic of discussion on racing forums on the internet. In 1963, Ford built 212 Lightweight Galaxie factory race cars. Features common to these cars include Fords 427/425 HP R-Code engine, Borg Warner 4-speed aluminum transmission, Dual Holley 4-barrel carburetors, Fiberglass front fenders and trunk lid. They were heater, radio and arm rest delete. Special lightweight interior components, Bostrom lightweight bucket seats, and rubber floor mats to replace carpeting were common. This car is restored to racing spec for the period. The transmission is an aluminum case T-10 Top Loader 4-speed. Nostalgia collectors will agree that this is one worth checking out.
June is upon us, and so we begin the season's most active month for the collector car hobby. Our car show team will be at the 2017 Raleigh Classic Car Auction in Raleigh, North Carolina, June 23-24, 2017. We like this auction because they always have great cars at very affordable prices. Our readers will benefit greatly from researching their offerings this year. This will be the first year we have covered this auction.
Here is a sampling of cars you'll see going to the highest bidder in Raleigh:
The Raleigh Classic will have a variety of American collector cars including classics and muscle cars. Here is a Plum Crazy Purple 1971 Plymouth Cuda with black billboards which will be offered at the sale, Lot # J-2031. They say it is equipped with a 340 cubic inch motor. Also equipped with auto transmission and positraction rear end. Options include power steering and power brakes. It also has two factory build sheets. They say it is a very nice Cuda that drives and runs great. They estimate that this car will bring between $55,000 and $60,000.
There is nothing in the collector car hobby so iconic as the fins on a 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Hardtop. They say this one is an 80% original example that was purchased locally by Thad Eure Jr., owner of the famous Angus Barn Steak House in Raleigh, North Carolina over 58 years ago. The mileage, 56,776, is reported as original, and the condition of the interior indicates this to be correct. Includes factory air conditioning and signal seeking radio in addition to Cadillac's standard luxury features of the day. They estimate the value at $40,000 to $45,000.
One you don't see very often. Here is a chance to own a 1957 Dodge 500 Convertible. Best of all, they say it is close to 100 percent original. What are the odds? They say it rides and drives as well as it looks. The mileage of 61K is believed to be actual and the near perfect condition of the upholstery reflects minimal use through the years. All aspects of this car are truly remarkable including the push button transmission, the convertible top mechanism. Estimated value seems low at $75,000 to $80,000.
There are two red 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertibles in the auction inventory so far this year. This one is said to have undergone a concourse quality restoration of the highest quality. It is highly optioned with a 283 ci V8, power pack, power glide automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, AM radio, tissue dispenser, power convertible top, fender skirts, rock guards, spinner wheel covers and continental kit. They estimate it to sell for between $75,000 and $85,000.
Also see these very rare lots:
1953 Pontiac Chieftain Convertible will go for under $100,000
1950 Studebaker Champion likely to sell in the $12,000 to $15,000 range
1960 Volvo Amazon Station Wagon may sell for $35,000 to $40,000
1955 Ford Fairlane Sunliner estimated to sell for $38,000 to $42,000
1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback worth $53,000 to $58,000
1958 Chevy Impala Hardtop estimated value $38,000 to $42,000
You will be able to preview the auction cars and trucks at the North Carolina Fairgrounds Expo Center and the Jim Graham Building, June 22, 2017, from 5 PM to 8 PM. The auction begins at 9:30 am on June 23rd and 24th.
From hood ornament, to wood roof, to bed, this 1929 Ford Model A Huckster Pickup is an eye-catching work of art. You can see a full walk around in the video above. Or click here. It features a stunning green leather interior, nicely modernized supercharged 350 cid V8, Mustang II independent suspension, and an automatic 350 transmission. The walk-around really helps one appreciate the beautiful wood bed. Take a look!

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be featured in the DEAL of the DAY section on the Cars On Line home page. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the home page! You'll always see them here first though.
Early last year some of our advertisers in the Southwest were saying that first generation Chevy Malibus were getting hard to find and were in big demand. We think that is still the case. So it was a surprise for us to see this 1965 Chevy Malibu SS come in from Edgewood, Iowa this week. It sure takes a nice picture, doesn't it? The seller tells us, " It was originally a Texas car, so there is no rust. It was totally redone about ten years ago. It is all numbers matching with a 327/300 hp engine and 4-speed tranny and has power steering and power brakes. The regal red paint is superb." You'll have to inspect it to know for sure, but it sure seems like this one is worth checking out. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $27,900.
Over the years our newsletter readers have seen ads from Top Notch Vehicles in Jefferson, Wisconsin They specialize in affordable collector cars. Some of their offerings really are amazing deals. Check out this 1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne C10 Pickup they posted this week. The Cheyenne trim package combines with the White, Ochre and white color scheme to give it the iconic Cheyenne look. The stance is enhanced with a slight lowering, and the wheels set it off. The engine is the 350-4V coupled to a 350 Hydra-matic. A dual exhaust system was connected to the stock manifolds. The distributor was changed to HEI. It now has an air conditioning conversion to 134A. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The price is just $14,995.
A collector might consider it a "poor man's" Road Runner. But whatever you call it, this Tuxedo black 1968 Plymouth Satellite is a great lookiing muscle car. What a great way to get started in the collector car hobby. It is being offered for sale by Coyote Classics in Greene, Iowa. At the asking price, it will not be available for too long. We hope you get a chance to inspect it. But hurry. They says it is powered by a 318 V8 backed up by a automatic transmission. According to the ad copy, it comes equipped with power steering, Alpine CD player, dual exhaust, headers, and is riding on a set of Magnum 500 rims with RWL tires. Coyote Classics posted a video of this car where they talk about the car's condition. It will be our DEAL of the DAY because the asking price is only $15,500.
In the 1980's, Nissan's 300ZX was a "poor man's" alternative to the Corvette. This week a private seller from Punta Gorda, Florida listed his prized 1986 Nissan 300ZX sports car which is now in the collectible category. The private seller says he is the second owner and has had it for 22 years, always garage kept. He says it runs well, and had a valve job done a few years back. Has new carpet, and new 2-tone leather seats. He has a list of new parts recently upgraded on the car noted in the ad text. He also included a list of parts he has ready to install on the car. So you get a glimpse of what it might need. This is a desirable sports car. We have chosen it to be our DEAL of the DAY this coming week. The asking price is $10,499.
A private seller from Southgate, Michigan is offering his desirable 1966 Chevrolet Impala Hardtop for sale this week. From the look of the photos it is probably a driver quality car. But it is an Impala, very popular among Chevy collectors. The seller says it is clean with no rust. The miles are recorded to be 81,000, and the seller says they are original miles. It has a small block engine with an Edelbrock intake, but the seller says he has the original intake and will include it in the sale. He says it is an original West Coast car. He used a SLIDE SHOW ad which indicates the condition of the car. Take a close look at the photos to familiarize yourself with the condition class here. The best part of the deal is the price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The price is $17,900.
These WWII era Jeeps are till very popular and in big demand, especially at this price point. The private seller from Catheys Valley, California has a long list of upgrades and restoration parts included in the ad copy. Read the ad on this 1948 Jeep CJ2A to find out more. The paint was stripped down to metal and replaced with Mossy Oak Obsession overlay. He says he has all the receipts for the extensive work done on this classic Jeep. He says over $9,000 was spent on the restoration work. He describes it as being in "beautiful condition." Remember to have it inspected before you buy, but hurry. It is be our DEAL of the DAY this week with an asking price of $9,400.
